Chambers Pillar Campground - Northern Territory
The Chambers Pillar campground is divided into two areas. One area is for camper trailers/caravans and motorhomes and the other for tents. The camping area for tents is closer to the Pillar and has the walk to the Pillar starting directly at the parking area.
Although the areas are a little smaller, these 'tent' sites can be suitable for smaller campers, rooftop tents and so on.
There are gas BBQ's in the tent area also however were not working when Live2Camp were here. This campground is set in the most beautiful area with the sun setting and rising over the gorgeous Pillar visible from your campsite.
The drive to the Pillar from Alice Springs is 4wd only and can be difficult after rain.

1989 Moking Central Australia ... Journey to Chambers Pillar
In 1989, as an official trip of the Moke Owners' Association of Victoria, Paul, Kevin & Lorraine, Laurie & Zelda, Lachlan, Pop (aka John) and Mark set off on a 4 week circumnavigation of Central Australia. The trip included Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kings Canyon, Alice Springs, Palm Valley, Chambers Pillar and the old Ghan Railway near the Simpson Desert. This clip highlights their assault on Chambers Pillar, one of the toughest Moking challenges ever faced.
The adventure was recorded on Super 8 film by Mark Radford (Member 180L). The MOA arranged conversion of the original to digital format and Mark edited it to produce this clip.

Backtrack to Alice
A trip attempting to follow the old Ghan railway line easement from Oodnadatta to Alice Springs, also showing Chambers Pillar, Ruby Gap Gorge and Rainbow Valley. I had followed the rail easement from Port Augusta to Oodnadatta in my previous adventure in 2000, 'The Best Option'.
This video contains the only time you get to see me filming (other when others filmed me), running two cameras to catch two different angles at meal time at ‘Bloods Creek Bore’. That dingo that I filmed in the morning must have been lonely, he woke me up early in the morning howling for his mates, okay with that but he was only a few meters from the back of the car. It certainly woke me up, I was glad to be in the back of the car, and not sleeping in a tent. Dingoes did not worry me until myself and Jim (2009 - A Hard Place) came across a dingo at camp Coober Pedy (seventy kilometres north of Coober Pedy) given the half a chance this one would have had us, It had no fear of humans wanted to come in close, however if we moved the hair on back of his neck stood up, and his teeth would bare with a growl, and he would stand his ground ready to attack. This one bad encounter has changed my perception of what these animals are capable of.
This is the trip that introduces the ‘hat’, bought in Todd Mall, on this trip (red kangaroo hide, the only one they had in the store). This hat was to be a feature of all subsequent trips, and was such that I even obtained another, as a spare, just in case. The plan to follow the old Ghan line all the way to the rail station on the southern entrance to Alice Springs (Stuart), this I did a little too well, I came to the highway, crossed over, and continued though the fence on the ballast, diving into the rail yards. Following the rails I came to the car park for the tourist office for the station. Mounting the curb (it is a four wheel drive) I drove into the car park the wrong way, and parked. “oy”, “where the bloody hell did you come from”, the groundsman said “what do you think you’re doing coming in like that”, “I’ve never in all my time seen anyone come in the car park from that direction”. I related my trip following the line from Oodnadatta and he lightened up, in fact he wanted to do the same trip someday.
I recon' Subway should give me a subsidy.

Ewaninga Rock Carvings Conservation Reserve--
The Ewaninga Conservation Reserve is an area of low sand dunes, rocky outcrops and a claypan. It is located about 35 km south of Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia. The claypan is a slightly concave surface approximately 100m across. It retains water after even light rain, thus attracting many birds and animals. The claypan and surrounding outcrops are also a significant archaeological site. The Reserve contains many prehistoric and pecked engravings that provide an outstanding example of central Australian rock art. The main feature of the area is a set of about 1000 petroglyphs, distributed among the rock outcrops to the south and south-east of the claypan. Most of the petroglyphs are non-representational, consisting of circles, lines and other geometric motifs, though there are some examples of animal tracks. The motifs have been compared with those found elsewhere in Central Australia and Tasmania. Aspects of the petroglyphs such as their motifs and degree of weathering suggest an age as great as 30,000 years, although a more precise age is unknown. Flood describes the petroglyphs as Panaramitee-style, which, based on dating of other Paranamitee sites, could give a date as early as 40,000 years ago.
Chamber's Pillar Historical Reserve--
The Chamber's Pillar Historical Reserve is located about only 160 km south of Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia. But it takes nearly four hours to get there. The Old South Road from Alice Springs to Maryvale Homestead is unsealed but easy to drive on. After the turnoff at Maryvale Homestead the road becomes rough and sandy. This section of the route is strictly 4WD only. The extraordinary sandstone pillar, which towers about 50 m above the surrounding plane, can be seen already from the distance. In the past, Chamber's Pillar was an important landmark for European explorers first and later for travellers heading north to Alice Springs. Many of the early visitors carved their names into the sandstone pillar, where they still can be seen now. Chamber's Pillar is a site of Aboriginal significance. In the Dreamtime it's said that the powerful gecko Itirkawara killed some of his ancestors and took a girl of the wrong skin group. They were banished to the desert, both turned into stone. Itirkawara became the Pillar and the girl became Castle Rock, about 500 m away.
