The Chambers of the Black Hand - Lightning Ridge
Tim Smith from Discover Downunder uncovers the mystery of the Chambers of the Black Hand, one of Lightning Ridge's top tourist attractions. 35 feet below ground level, it's a bit like a whirlwind trip through time and history thanks to the vivid imagination of sculptor Ron Canlin. Explore Egyptian burial chambers, African jungles and a wall of Hollywood fame all in the cavernous underbelly of the Chambers of the Black Hand. Ron started his work 16 years ago and he excavates all the rooms out before creating his sculptures. It's a total labour of love.
Back above ground, what better way to end a dusty day down the mines than a soak in the open air baths? Open 24/7, they are free of charge and located just 300 metres from the Opal Caravan Park.

Chambers of the Black Hand - underground carving mine tours
Ten years in the making, Ron’s most recently finished carving is “The African Chamber”; with an elephant, a silverback gorilla, pythons, an orang-utan with attitude and countless other varieties of animals. “The Last Supper” was a challenge, “The Egyptian Room” a bit of a giggle and now, goblins, dinosaurs, an Archangel and Nostradamus emerge eerily from the walls.

Lightning Ridge part 3-1
The Chamber of the Black Hand, an underground art gallery carved into the local sandstone, some 10 metres/30 feet below the ground level. This level has never produced opals, as they are not found at this depth - must go deeper.

Gyuto Monks of Tibet visit The Chambers of The Black Hand in Lightning Ridge
Day 3 of Milarepa's Buddhist Centre Inc hosting the Gyuto Monks of Tibet in Lightning Ridge to create the Yamantaka Sand Mandala.
Before the days Sand Mandala events, the Monks visited the Buddha carvings at the Chambers of the Black Hand. They had a fantastic time, enjoying the uniqueness and good acoustics that the Chambers provided to their chanting.
The generosity of Ron Canlin, Trevor Hudson and all the visitors who made offerings to the Buddha carvings at the Black Hand, which contributed to funding the event was recognised with a traditional offering of thanks and sincere gratitude.

Weekend in Lightning Ridge
We spent the weekend in Lightning Ridge. A unique town with plenty to do and see. We loved every bit of it.
We flew there in our RV7 from Cessnock. Flight time was 1h 44mins. We met up with family who were also visiting for the weekend.
Day 1
We did some of the famous car door tours. They are a self drive tour around some of the icons at the Ridge. We ate a meal at Bruno's Italian Restaurant - the food was AMAZING! and visited the hot bore baths in the evening for a nice long soak.
Day 2
After a quick look at the local markets which happen every Sunday morning, we toured around some of the other car door tours and visited the Chamber of the Black Hand. An incredible underground mine tour where we learnt a lot about the mines and also saw a very large collection of carvings that were carved out of the sandstone underground. This is a must do if you are visiting the Ridge.
After completing the last of the car door tours we headed back to the plane and returned home.
Must Do Activities in Lightning Ridge:
* Car Door Tours
* Hot Bore Baths
* The Chamber of the Black Hand
* Eat a meal or two at Bruno's Italian Restaurant
I wish we had more time to drive around some more of the tracks that surround the town, we would have seen so much more. I also wished we had visited Amigo's Castle. I haven't seen any reviews on it but it sounded interested and wasn't very expensive.
Snippets of some of the amazing things at Lightning Ridge
This video is just some snippets of some of the many things to see and do at Lightning Ridge. I really dislike seeing everything about something before I go there as a tourist so these are just a little look at some of the many things we saw at Lightning Ridge. I did not even mention the chambers of the black hand carvings because it was temporarily closed when we were there on the Queens birthday weekend in June 2017. I hope you enjoy this and my few other Lightning Ridge videos one of which has over 8000 hits is called Using the wires and opal mining at Lightning Ridge Australia, where my parents were opal miners for about 25 years. The opal thumb nail picture is Mum & Dad's largest opal they sold at 410 carats.
