Chamonix Mont Blanc and Geneva // Week 8 // CC Overseas Travel Vlog
WE MADE IT TO THE FRENCH ALPS!!!
Cheap tickets to Geneva a shuttle to Chamonix in the French Alps?! Sign me up!! We flew into Geneva on Thursday night after class, so we could catch an early bus to Chamonix on Friday morning. Bear with me because I can't seem to pronounce anything properly in this video.
Day 1 (Oct. 14, 2016) - We took an hour bus ride to Chamonix! On the ride in, we even saw some Glaciers and Snow!! Crazy! Unfortunately, the weather was pretty rainy, but that didn't stop us from enjoying the beautiful town. I can only imagine what Chamonix would look like with clear skies right after a big snow storm. To get out of the rain we toured around the CHAMONIX ALPINE MUSEUM, which was pretty interesting. I never knew that Chamonix's Winter Sports Festival inspired the creation of the Winter Olympics. We then got some hot coco (my favorite!!) before heading back to Geneva for the evening.
Day 2 - We only had one day in Geneva, but we also didn't have too much of a plan for what we wanted to do. It was the week before finals week, so we were all happy just to wander around the city and take in the sights. We started out by walking along LAKE GENEVA to marvel at the JET D'EAU, which is the giant fountain in the middle of the lake. We then continued on to wander around old town. I would highly highly highly recommend a going to the top of SAINT PIERRE's CATHEDRAL. It has the best vantage point over all of Geneva. We were unbelievably lucky because the sky was impeccably clear that day. We could see clear to the top of the surrounding mountains. After taking a climb to the top of the cathedral, we meandered to PLAINE DE PLAINPALAIS. Its this giant open space that has a massive flea market on Saturdays. While none of us were too keen on the Flea Market, its definitely a place for some serious antiquing. I really just loved sitting and people watching. It was the first warm day we had experienced in a while, so basking in the sun felt lovely. After grabbing some lunch we headed over to the UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS. We all had fun walking around the grounds. We even popped our heads into MUSEE ARIANA, which houses ceramics from all over the world. While Holly explored most of the museum, the rest of us accidentally took a solid power nap on some of the couches in the lobby. (whoops! haha) In the same area, you can visit the RED CROSS MUSEUM, while it would have been fun to spend sometime in that museum, they didn't have a student discount, so we decided to go watch the sunset over lake Geneva instead. We all just picked up some food from a local grocery store and sat on a bridge to watch the sunset. All of us realized how hysterical we must have looked because so many locals would pass us and chuckle as the said bon appétit!
Overall, our trip was such a success! I got to drink hot chocolate in the alps (TWICE), so honestly what could be better?!

Travel Vlog #1 to Switzerland
There will be a series of these vlogs posted. This will most likely be the worst of them and the shortest one as well. As always I hope you like this short travel vlog into Switzerland!!!
DiscoverEU
DiscoverEU is a competition organised by the European Union for people of the member states who are 18 years old. In this competition you can win the interrail pass and travel through Europe for 7 days in a period of one month, completely for free.
I travelled in September, 2019, and the video captures my experiences.
Everything started with a Facebook add about DiscoverEU. I applied, filled the survey and later e-mail arrived with results. I was one of the winners! Then I started with planning. The most difficult was picking which countries should I visit and actually... that was the only planning i did. There was no exact plan, train or accommodation arranged in advance. I just knew I want to visit Alps in France and Switzerland, mabye Barcelona, Pyrenees mountains, and... many more. My plan was to sleep in campsites, in my own tent.
My friend Anna decided to join me on this adventurous journey and her wish was to visit Nurnberg, Germany, so it was our 1st stop. The next day we moved towards Switzerland, to the border town Lindau. From there we took a ferry, to the swiss site of Bodamsee. The original plan was to move from Lindau to Andermatt; but the forecast told me that it will be rainy over there and we should better go to westerner part of the Switzerland, to a mountain valley called Lötschental. On the way we also managed to spend few hours in Swiss capital, Bern. Lötschental valley is beautiful, in the middle of mountains right under glaciers. From there we moved towards Annecy, France, with a short stop in Swiss town, Brig and also Geneve.
Annecy was very nice, actually Annas fav place on this trip. We had luck that there was this kind lady at the campsite, which was full, but she saw we are tired and exhausted and she found for us place anyway. We had local cousine, like amazing goat cheese, Fondue, baguettes, etc.
Then we moved to Chamonix, this time not with a train, but with a bus, because we wanted to save a travel day. For me, Chamonix was the best highlight on this trip. We got to the altitude of 3850 m, with the highest european cable car - Aiguille du midi. The view on Chamonix and Mont blanc, highest mountain of the EU, was stunning. Then we went back down and did some trekking, to the Mer de Glace glacier, where we experienced via ferrat for the 1st time. Unfortunately we had to go back because it was already late and the via ferrat path was getting more dangerous.
The next day we decided to try our luck at another glacier, Argentiere glacier. We have seen the global warming in action. Before 50 years the glacier was all over the valley, now its just at the top of the mountain
At the Chamonix campsite we decided our journey will continue to Barcelona.
However the way had to be split, the distance was too for one day. I have decided to go to Cassis, coastral town in Provence, and it was a good choice. Besides beaches there was also a Calanques park, which was nice to see, but the trail led on limestones and it was slippery as hell.
And then, finally Barcelona in Spain, or in... Catalonia? Of course we had to taste local food, like Paella, Sangria...
When we left Barcelona, we knew that our trip is slowly coming to it's end. There were only 3 travel days left and we needed them to get back home, to Czech Republic.
We planned to visit town Orange, in Provence, so we entered the train, with final destination Toulouse. At that moment we changed our plans and stayed in the train till its final stop. Toulouse was nice and pleasant, the ping buildings were nice to see.
And our last stop was Montreux, Switzerland. City which is known for the Château de Chillon castle.
We had to get up at 3.45 and then we headed back home, to Bohumin, where we arrived at 23.30.
Discovereu is amazing opportunity for young people and everyone who can, should apply. It changed my life a lot and I can say, that taking part in DiscoverEU was one of the best decision of my life.
All the video is mine in exception of the photo of the night sky and audio. Here are credits:
