Places to see in ( Valence - France ) Champ de Mars
The Champ de Mars is a vast esplanade of 3 hectares open to the east and west, located in the city center of Valence , in the department of Drôme . It borders the Maurice Faure Avenue to the west, Gambetta Avenue to the north, Champ de Mars Avenue to the east, and the Lycée Street to the south.
The Champ de Mars esplanade is ideally located in the city center of Valence , between the Gare district and Aristide Briand square in the east, the Vieux Valence district in the north, the Jouvet park in the west, and the Émile Loubet high school to the south, offering breathtaking views of the Ardèche hills and the ruins of Crussol Castle .
Established in 1773, some years before the Revolution , the Champ de Mars is the privileged place of walk of Valentino and visitors throughout the xix th century. The panoramic view that one discovers from this terrace, on the Rhone , the Vivarais and the ruins of the castle of Crussol, is very appreciated and is even the pride of its inhabitants.
At the time of the Revolution, the Republican guards gathered there, the young Bonaparte among them, as well as the general valentinois Championnet whose statue, built by Victor Sappey in 1848, throne to the north of the esplanade. This site has become the showcase of Valencia through the many exhibitions it has hosted, cultural events, sports and other.
Parking dotted with plane trees for several decades, the city of Valencia planned to remove it during the period 1998/1999 and decided, by its burial, to turn it into a vast green space. In 2001, the reconversion work, which lasted less than a year, transformed it into a large wooded esplanade, enhancing the setting of the Peynet kiosk , listed on the list of historic monuments in 1982. This project development was part of a contextual approach by offering a lookout on the Rhone and Ardeche , and simplifying the legibility of spaces to connect the old city to the suburbs of Valencia.
Covering an area of 3 hectares, this vast square 300 meters long and 100 meters wide occupies an old alluvial terrace of the Rhone balcony on the river, facing the distant horizons of the castle of Crussol , perched on the limestone foothills of the department next to the Ardèche. Integrated into the geometry of the city's territory, the garden esplanade is conceived as a contemporary space: an urban esplanade lined with trees and linden trees , composed of two large rectangular lawns on both sides of the Peynet kiosk (oriented North-South ), and place of ambulation for the valentines. North of the esplanade is the statue of General Championnet and to the south a memorial of the First World War.

Places to see in ( Valence - France )
Valence is a city in southeast France. It’s home to St-Apollinaire Cathedral, dating from the 11th century. The Valence Museum offers art and archaeology displays, plus views over the Rhône Valley. Jouvet Park features canals and a rose garden. Carved heads adorn the 16th-century Maison des Têtes. Across the Rhône River are the medieval Château de Crussol and the Soyons Archaeological Site, with its caves and museum.
Capital of the Drome department, Valence is a sleepy city overlooking the Rhone River. An hour from Lyon and Grenoble and in close proximity to vineyards producing Crozes Hermitages, St Joseph and St Peray wines, the city makes a wonderful stop off for wine tours of the region. The much-loved Kiosk De Peynet stands on the Champ de Mars and is one of the highlights of this small city - and a good place to start your visit. This ornate bandstand with beautiful views of the decorative gardens and fountains of Park Jouvet below, the Rhone and further Chateux Crussol high up in the distance inspired the artist Peynet to base his romantic love story here.
For those interested in the more historical sights, Valence old town boasts the Maison de Tetes, a 16th century house whose facade, corridor and inner courtyard are decorated with the sculped figures including heads of Ancient Greek nobility and, on the facade, the winds, time and fortune as well as law, theology and medicine are represented. Close by are also the roman cathedral of St Appolinnaire containing features unique to the Rhone region and The 'Pendentif', an ornate funeral monument to Canon Mistral erected in 1548. A walk along Grand Rue and its surroundings takes in all of these sights and offers a wonderful chance to view the quaint cafes and boutiques that line the narrow medieval streets.
Despite it’s large student population, Valence nightlife is notably quiet. However, from the more traditional (if touristic) restaurants around Place des Clercs serving Provencal dishes and Drome specialities, to the more varied tastes such as Greek, Indian, Tex Mex and Chinese around Place de la Pierre and Place St Jean, there is always something to satify your apetite.
Enjoying a leisurely lunch in the sunny market square is a must. Valence is also home to the gastronomic experience that is Pic, a 3 star restaurent owned by internationally renowned chef, Anne Sophie Pic. A wide selection of cafes and bars are scattered throughout the centre, along with 2 small nightclubs.
For those in search of something more unusual, a short journey should be made to the surroundings of Valence to the Jean Perdrix park. At the centre of this large green space are the two giant ‘Water Castles’, standing at over 50 metres above the water. These award winning examples of 1970s architecture are one of the lesser known features of Valence.

The Jouvet Park is a park of 7 hectares ( 72,500 m 2 ) located in the municipality of Valencia , near the Rhône , in the esplanade of the Champ de Mars , in line with the castle of Crussol and the Vivarais Mountains . A veritable green lung of the city center, the park bears the name of Theodore Jouvet (1837-1905), the generous donor who offered the city of Valencia the sum necessary for the purchase of the land.
In the xix th century, instead of Jouvet park were the lands of the Robine (the name of the source of water passing through them) between the Champ de Mars and the Rhone. Various projects futures pointed to raze what was initially a meadow and small gardens, to build it in the middle of the xix th century, a railway station and a housing estate and finally a high school. At the end of the same century, the owners decided to sell their plot of 6.5 ha. On 20 December 1900 , the City Council decided to buy land motivated by the need of green spaces and safeguarding the panorama of the Rhone and the Vivarais.
It is only in 1902 that the lands are bought, after Théodore Jouvet ( 1837 - 1905 ), Bordeaux wine merchant, donate to the city of Valencia for the acquisition of the land and the realization of a park. At the beginning of the same year is launched a national competition to design the park. It will not be less than fourteen proposals that are filed with the mayor including some emanating from landscape architects of international renown, such as Jules Vacherot, co-winner of Edouard Redont of Reims, the third prize going to Eugène Touret of Paris .
Given the high cost of the various projects, the construction of the park is entrusted to Alphonse Clerc, director of the Bridges and Roads of Drôme , and landscape architect Henry Martinet. They take back the winning projects during the competition, in order to create a new execution plan. The construction is delegated to Henri Nivet de Limoges, only to start on July 15th, 1903 .
Two years later, on August 13, 1905 , the President of the Republic Émile Loubet , native of Drôme, inaugurates what is the first public park of Valence, as well as the stone bridge crossing the Rhone, designed by Alphonse Clerc, and which is now gone. On the same date, he inaugurates the boys' college, which will become the high school bearing his name today.
