Dominica Champagne Reef Snorkelling
Snorkelling at the remarkable Champagne Reef in Dominica in the Caribbean. Bubbling up from the sea bed is heated air and water from the volcanic depths below - so like swimming through a glass of champagne.

Snorkeling in Dominica at Champagne Reef
Dominica was the second to the last stop on our 2014 cruise, and the reason for booking this particular cruise. The island lived up to our expectations.
Slight cloud cover on this day, but the water was super clear.
The bubbles were incredible, you could hear the tone in the water change as we got closer and closer to the bubbles. Floating in them was like being in a hot tub while being in the ocean. Very cool experience.
Dominica (Part I) - Champagne Reef Snorkel trip
Irie Safari Champagne Snorkel Adventures - We were told the days before had been very windy, and that was why the water was so cloudy. The sun came over the mountain and visibility improved a little. Our guide was very patient and did not rush us at all. She took the time to explain the reef, and we felt we learned a lot on our trip.
Irie Safari Champagne Snorkel Adventures:
It's just a 15-minute drive south of Roseau through the picturesque village of Pointe Michel to the watersports facility at Champagne. Champagne is Dominica's premier diving and snorkeling site and rates among the top five snorkeling sites in the Caribbean. Underwater geothermal springs vent gasses in the form of thousands of warm bubbles giving you a feeling of swimming through a giant glass of Champagne. The reef here is quite spectacular with a myriad of sea life including sponges, lobster, parrot fish and a resident population of hawksbill turtles. You will be outfitted with high quality snorkeling gear and given an orientation of the facility and the adventure that awaits you on the reef. Tours of the reef are led by professional PADI-certified dive masters who will instruct you on the correct use of your gear and brief you on what you are likely to see and experience once in the water. After your tour, enjoy the comfort and convenience of showers and changing rooms, refreshments, a gift shop and our sundeck overlooking the beautiful Caribbean Sea.

Dominica, Champagne Reef and Emerald Pool
A day long trip in Dominica. It started at Champagne Reef where the sea floor is venting hot air bubbles, then goes to the beautiful Emerald Pool. Lots to see on this island if you get out there.
Dominica: Snorkeling at the Champagne Reef
Natural 'bubbles' - caused by hot water springs. Looks like you are inside a glass of 'champagne'. Very cool. The water was markedly warmer and the fish seemed to like this area. Pics taken with a Canon PowerShot D-10. Great camera!
Champagne Reef Snorkeling Montage, Dominica, GoPro Hero Original
Reach Champagne Reef from the coastal road between Pointe Michel and Soufriere. There is a small cafe, changing rooms and toilets, then a wooden walkway to the beach. There were 2 black rubber mats to help people into the water as the large rounded rocks are hard to walk on. Most people used the furthest (southern) mat to enter the water.
Montage of snorkelling footage from Champagne Reef, Dominica, using a GoPro Hero Original. Mostly sunny conditions, shot January 2015.

Champagne Beach in Roseau, Dominica
Champagne Beach is located on the island of Dominica in Caribbean Sea south of Roseau. This beach was named Champagne Beach because of small gas bubbles continuously rise from the volcanic sea floor creating fantastic underwater scenery, which is with combination of crystal clear water and extensive marine life is perfect for snorkeling and diving. The beach itself is very rocky with black volcanic sand in spots.
Snorkel or scuba dive at Champagne Beach. Named after the gas bubbles that rise from the volcanic floor to the water's surface, the beach is a popular diving spot with rich marine life. Swim and explore the crystal clear waters of Champagne Reef, dive among the bubbles, and see many colorful species such as lobsters, seaturtles, seahorses, octopuses, and giant crabs. Take a walk on the black sand shore, but remember to bring suitable footwear to protect from the rocky volcanic beach. Using our world travel planner, Roseau attractions like Champagne Beach can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.
Nestled along the coastline in Roseau, Dominica, Champagne Beach has much more to offer than the pristine white sand beach that first meets the eye. Beach dwellers will be spellbound as soon as they dip their toes into the warm turquoise waters.
The sea floor covers a series of volcanic vents, which release drops of liquid crystal into the water. The effect for swimmers? Like floating in a giant flute glass of Champagne!
Great for snorkeling right off the shoreline, Champagne Reef will also wow visitors with its vibrant coral and plentiful sea life.
