Taittinger Reims Champagne tour - Paris, France
Champagne Tour of Taittinger Cellars in Reims. The guide was not only beautiful but an eloquent orator and clearly answered questions. The champagne was wonderful. I tasted several. My favorite was the 2012 vintage bottle which I had the good fortune to bring home to Cusco. If you love champagne like I do I hope you get to experience this amazing and exquisite champagne from Taittinger in Reims, France

Taittinger
It is a one day visit to the historic wine cellars of Taittinger. A one day visit that immerses you in centuries of history. Located in Reims, France, this renowned Champagne House was founded by a family that traces their wine making roots back to the 1800’s on land that has grown vineyards since the middle ages, utilizing “cellars” that were created by chalk mines during the Roman Empire. Despite the historic significance and family history The House of Taittinger is considered a “new” house of premium champagnes.
Visits to the House of Taittinger include group tours and custom tastings of the extensive vintages. One of the few Champagnes to still be owned and managed by the family name that is on the label, a visit to the House of Taittinger is a history lesson in champagne making, vintages and weather since 1945.
The Taittinger Family has been intricately interwoven with wine making since the 1700’s. A young cavalry officer Pierre-Charles Taittinger became acquainted with Reims and vowed to make it his home. Eventually the Taittinger Family established their residence and vineyards in 1932 in the Champagne Region of France. Their innovative style influenced by their most productive grapes has continued to grow and prosper. They maintain a history of their vintages dating back to 1945.
A tour of the champagne “cellars” which are remnants of a chalk quarry worked during the Romans in the 4th Century is a highlight of the Taittinger tour. The monks of the 13th century expanded these caves beneath the Saint Nicaise Abbey to house their wines. The Abbey was destroyed during the French Revelution, the underground world of quarry pits caves and extensions remained in tact and are today used by the Taittinger Family.
Today the dark cool caves host hand turned bottles of Taittinger Champagne. For the history buff the Taittinger is a treasure trove of living examples throughout the ages. The 4th century quarry, the 13th century additions and the stories of the people who lived there from the persecuted Christians of Roman days to the French Citizens avoiding Nazi Capture are intriguing. The Gothic workmanship from the days of the Abbey are exquisite and impeccably preserved due to the coolness of the underground labyrinth.
With all the history there is to absorb on the one-day tour, Champagne is the star of the day. Almost 3 million bottles of award winning champagne spend three years in the historic wine cellars of the House of Taittinger. The decision by the Taittinger Family to concentrate of Chardonnay was a proven success as they have mastered a champagne that reflects complexity and lightness.
The Taittinger Family selects grape varieties from over 300 acres of planted vineyards, each with a unique character provided by the soil and cultivation. The coolness of the northern champagne vineyards allows the Taittinger Family to expertly blend their carefully cultivated vines to achieve their desired results, which is a collection of the world’s finest champagne vintages year after year.
The House of Taittinger offers a vast selection of Cuvees which producers their signature champagnes you can explore on your group or personal tasting tour. Your Taittinger Tasting Tour could include Prestige Rose, Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs, Nocturne Rose, and Prelude Grands Crus and much more at this elegant House of Champagne.
Hand crafted French Champagne without great French Cuisine would be unheard of, the Taittinger Family supports amateur chefs with the “Taittinger” award, a yearly contestant pitting International chefs against each other in a heated competition.
Supporting the Arts, the Taittinger Family has a gallery of modern art unlike any other you have visited. The Taittinger Collection highlights fine art with the champagne bottle as the canvas. This intriguing modern art collection began in 1983 by matching an artist with a vintage. The champagne became the muse and the bottle the canvas. The tradition continues, and it is now on display as the Taittinger Collection.
A visit to Taittinger for champagne will also include an eyepopping experience of the history of civilization, while those visiting for the historic context will be treated to one of the world’s finest champagnes. No matter what your interests, the history of wine, the history of cultivation, great champagne or a pleasant day in Northern France, a visit to the House of Taittinger is one of those once in a lifetime experiences.
Champagne Tasting in France with Taittinger
When in Reims, you MUST take the tour of the Taittinger caves and then go enjoy a few glasses of champagne on your own. Reims is a quick 45 minute train ride from Paris and therefore, is the perfect day trip for anyone wanting to explore outside of Paris for a day. Taittinger is one of the few family large owned champagne houses left in Reims and I cannot recommend it enough!
Taittinger Champagne tasting is a must do when in the Champagne region!

Veuve Clicquot
Located at 12 Rue du Temple, Reims, France, Veuve Clicquot is recognized as the oldest ‘modern’ champagne houses. Founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot-Mulron, Veuve Clicquot is credited with making champagne the wine of choice for the bourgeoisie and royalty. The 1811 Comet Vintage of Veuve Clicquot is recognized as the first modern champagne vintage.
The son of Philippe Clicquot-Mulron married Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin in 1798. He died in 1805 leaving his bride in charge of the Company. Madame Clicquot, the first woman to take over a champagne house, continued the innovations in champagne production instituted by her Father-In-Law and Husband. She is credited with the biggest breakthrough in champagne production that led to its mass production, the rising rack. The Veuve Clicquot is sad to have made the first rosé champagne, and Madame Clicquot receives the accolades for perfecting it.
Madame Clicquot working in tandem with her cellar master, Antoine de Muller, immersed herself in the production of champagne and was a marketing expert in her time. She saw to it that the royal courts throughout Europe had access to her champagnes making it a sought-after wine across the continent. To this day Veuve Clicquot is distinguished by its yellow label, the same label that kings and queens recognized.
In 1987 the Veuve Clicquot brand of quality champagne was purchased by the Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy Group.

This is Julien, the French winemaking guy who makes wine videos on YouTube, yes wine videos.
We are looking at everything, the TOP 5 Things that you should know about Taittinger, and how to pronounce it correctly with a French pronunciation, one of the very most famous of all French Champagne houses.
What is Taittinger? The House is a few words
Taittinger is one of the most famous of all houses or Champagne makers in France and in the world, one of those iconic Champagne brands alongside the Moet & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, Bollinger and a few others…
Taittinger was founded in 1734, some 285 years ago, that’s under the reign of Louis the 15th before the French revolution. A little while ago!
The company is based in Reims, the capital city of the Champagne wine region, and is now headed by Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger (born 1953), a member of the consultative committee of the Banque de France.
I personally visited Taittinger headquarters in Reims and met Vitalie Taittinger for an interview. She’s part of the family and the marketing and communication director, and a very friendly, nice and approachable woman. Had a lovely time at Taittinger.
Taittinger is particularly known for its Chardonnay-dominant Champagnes, especially thanks to its Blanc de Blancs 100% Chardonnay prestige cuvée called Comtes de Champagne.
Taittinger – A Brief but Eventful History
The house founded in 1734 was bought by the Taittinger family, Pierre Taittinger in this instance in 1932 when he bought the Château de la Marquetterie, a famous property in Champagne.
His son François took the reins of the company in 1945 and built up the cellars and the vineyards, establishing Taittinger as one of the staple Champagne houses we know today.
In 2005, the company was sold to US investment group Starwood. The focus on short-term profitability then threatened the long-standing tradition of the house and the family, but a year later, Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger and the family backed up by banks managed to buy back the company.
Taittinger – The Vineyards
Taittinger owns about 290 hectares of vineyards (710 acres) of which about half is planted to Pinot Noir, the other half mainly composed of Chardonnay and a little bit of Pinot Meunier.
Taittinger own estate vineyards contribute 50 percent of the house sourcing for grapes, the other half of the grapes coming from contract growers that for most have had a historical relationship with the house.
Taittinger – The Wines
Taittinger house style is about acidic tension and finesse, always with dry and delicate flavors.
Taittinger's non-vintage cuvée, their most common one is called the Brut Réserve, which is blended from 40 percent Chardonnay, with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier making up the remainder.
The house also makes a non-vintage rosé called Prestige Rosé, a blend of 50/50 Chardonnay Pinot Noir only from grand Cru vineyards called Prélude Grands Crus, series of Vintage Champagne, or Brut Millésimé they make when the growing conditions are favorable and excellent to make a vintage Champagne. Their Folies de la Marqueterie is a tribute to the ‘Château de la Marquetterie’ made from grapes grown at the Folies vineyard that overlooks the Château, some of which are vinified in oak casks.
But of course, the flagship cuvée of Taittinger is the Comtes de Champagne. First made in the 1952 vintage. The 100% Chardonnay grapes are mostly sourced from grand cru vineyards from the Cotes de Blancs, the best area in Champagne for Chardonnay. They use just a little bit of oak, more for adding complexity and delicate nutty characters rather than imparting strong oaky notes. Taittinger's flagship is considered as one of the most consistent blanc de blancs from the region.
Taittinger also makes a Comtes de Champagne rosé.
Taittinger in the World
Taittinger invested in making fine sparkling wine around the world, including in the South of the Napa Valley with their Domaine Carneros of which I made a video review of the wines that you can watch following the link in the description.
More recently, Taittinger has established a vineyard in the English region of Kent called Saint Evremond.
