Champaign is a city in Champaign County, Illinois, United States. The city is located 135 miles south of Chicago, 124 miles west of Indianapolis, Indiana, and 178 mi northeast of St. Louis, Missouri. Champaign is notable for sharing the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with its sister city of Urbana. Champaign is also the home of Parkland College which serves about 18,000 students during the academic year. Due to the university and a number of well known technology startup companies, it is often referred to as the hub, or a significant landmark, of the Silicon Prairie. Champaign houses offices for Abbott, Archer Daniels Midland, Caterpillar, Deere & Company, Dow Chemical Company, IBM, State Farm, and Science Applications International Corporation, all of which are Fortune 500 companies, and for Sony.
The United States Census Bureau estimates the city was home to 84,513 people as of July 1, 2014. Champaign is the tenth-most populous city in Illinois, and the fourth-most populous city in the state outside of the Chicago metropolitan area. In 2013, Champaign was rated fifth best place in the United States for a healthy work-life balance.

In celebration of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s sesquicentennial, the BigTen Network and the University of Illinois tell the stories of three men who left enduring marks on the campus. Max Abramovitz created spaces for the campus to come together. Robert Zuppke changed football and expressed himself through art and Lorado Taft gave Illinois its most beloved symbol, the Alma Mater. The program was produced by Tim Hartin, Kaitlin Southworth and Alison Davis Wood for the University of Illinois Department of Athletics and Office of Public Affairs.
Lorado Taft: the Chicago Years
Sculptor Lorado Taft helped build Chicago's worldwide reputation as the epicenter of the City Beautiful Movement. In this new biography, art historian Allen Stuart Weller picks up where his earlier book Lorado in Paris left off, drawing on the sculptor's papers to generate a fascinating account of the most productive and influential years of Taft's long career.
Returning to Chicago from France, Taft established a bustling studio and began a twenty-one-year career as an instructor at the Art Institute, succeeded by three decades as head of the Midway Studios at the University of Chicago. This triumphant era included ephemeral sculpture for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition; a prolific turn-of-the-century period marked by the gold-medal-winning The Solitude of the Soul; the 1913 Fountain of the Great Lakes; the 1929 Alma Mater at the University of Illinois; and large-scale projects such as his ambitious program for Chicago's Midway with the monumental Fountain of Time. In addition, the book charts Taft's mentoring of women artists, including the so-called White Rabbits at the World's Fair, many of whom went on to achieve artistic success.
Lavishly illustrated with color images of Taft's most celebrated works, Lorado Taft: The Chicago Years completes the first major study of a great American artist.
Secret Safe Spaces in Illinois High School
Candidate calls for transparency and freedom of information in the opening statement. Indian Prairie Board of education candidate open forum. Metea Valley High school, February 22, 2017. Acoustics were pretty bad in the auditorium. Text of the statement is below:
Good evening,
My name is Renata Sliva and I have lived in Naperville since 1986. I have come to America for religious and political freedom from socialist Czechoslovakia in 1983. All my 8 children graduated from district 204 schools. During the past 8 years or so I paid much more attention of what is happening at our schools. I stand for freedom of information. The school and district administrations have not been honest with me. Let me tell you about a recent example: Just after November election I overheard there were safe spaces in one of our high schools. I wondered whether that is the same safe space as in colleges where students “hide” from president Trump. I e-mailed all school principals with the question if there were safe spaces in high schools and if so, what kind of safe spaces these were. They did not answer and instead referred me to the district administrator. The bottom line of a long conversation was that the administrator was not aware of safe spaces in our high schools. Then I received a picture from my contact and there is a safe space in that one high school. It is hard to understand and unacceptable that administration would withhold any information involving regular operations of the schools from public. It is disturbing and erodes the trust in the administration and I will advocate for a transparency in our schools.

Illinois Pioneers - African-American Leaders
Illinois Pioneers: Champaign African-American History
by Illinois Public Media
WILL-TV's Illinois Pioneers looks at African-American history in Champaign, Ill., through the eyes of Estella Merrifield and Hester Suggs, sisters and members of the Nelson family, one of the earliest African-American families in the city. Through their memories and photos, the program chronicles a portion of history from the Civil War through the Civil Rights protests of the late 1960s.
They talk about their grandfather, Joseph Nelson, who around 1900 was one of the first African Americans in the Champaign County Sheriff's Department, and describe the importance of organizations such as the American Legion in the lives of African-American residents. Churches, such as Salem Baptist and Bethel AME, were all-important as well, they said.

There’s a New Form of Matter in Town: EXCITONIUM!
Physicists have finally proved the existence of a new form of matter, but the way they did it might just blow your mind.
Quantum Teleportation Is Real, Here's How It Works -

Physicists excited by discovery of new form of matter, excitonium
“Excitonium has a team of researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign… well… excited! Professor of Physics Peter Abbamonte and graduate students Anshul Kogar and Mindy Rak, with input from colleagues at Illinois, University of California, Berkeley, and University of Amsterdam, have proven the existence of this enigmatic new form of matter, which has perplexed scientists since it was first theorized almost 50 years ago.”
Astronomers Capture the First ‘Image' of the Dark Matter That Holds the Universe Together
“Researchers have produced what they say is the first composite image of a dark matter filament that connects galaxies together. ‘This image moves us beyond predictions to something we can see and measure,’ said Mike Hudson, co-author of a new study published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.”
There's A New Form Of Matter That Exists In Four Dimensions!
“Time crystals actually move at their 'resting state' or their 'ground state' - that's when atoms have the lowest amount of energy. They're like a ball that is forever in motion. In other words, they are always unstable, down to the atomic level. They are the first non-equilibrium matter ever created!”

Illinois Pioneers - Parkland College
Illinois Pioneers: Parkland College History
by Illinois Public Media
WILL-TV's Illinois Pioneers looks back at the time when Parkland Junior College students attended classes in downtown Champaign, sometimes occupying church Sunday school classrooms where small chairs had to be stacked in the corner to make room for college-sized desks.
Host Rick Atterberry uses photos and recollections of former Parkland employees to tell the story of the 45-year history of Parkland, which held its first classes in the fall of 1967 with an enrollment of 1,338 students. Guest Rachel Schroeder, former assistant to the first president of Parkland, and Dale Ewen, retired executive vice president, describe the excitement of building the college from the ground up.

C.P. Snow Goes to Graduate and Medical School
This paper was part of the Towards Critical Medical Pedagogye panel at the 2014 International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry.
Paper Abstract: British chemist and novelist Charles Percy Snow is probably best known today for neither his laboratory studies nor his novels but rather as the originator of the phrase the two cultures to refer to the gap of knowledge and understanding between practitioners of the sciences and the humanities. At the same time he was decrying their separation—the 1950s and 1960s—the academic movement for interdisciplinarity was taking off (it got a second wind circa 1990). What might Snow have observed about the two cultures if he were training in them half a century after his famous lecture? In this paper I use autoethnography as a medical student and a history doctoral candidate to meditate on interdisciplinarity at a large, public R1 university. I conclude that some interdisciplinarity can be fostered (or hindered) by structural forces, but the rest must originate with the individual scholar's background and psychology.
Panel Abstract: Contemporary American medical education focuses on linear instruction aimed to maximize effectiveness and performance. However, it provides little to no space for analysis of the meanings and limitations of the educational experience, and discussion of the social implications of the practice of medicine is seldom encouraged. In the spirit of Paulo Freire, this panel will permit dialogue. We resist the rigid system that is medical education with reflections on student-professor and patient-physician power dynamics, medical missionary work in Ethiopia, the continued oppression of underrepresented minority students, and stressors on the health of women of color faculty in academia. We speak truth in the hopes of transforming the world of medical education.
About the Author: Kristen Ann Ehrenberger is a historian of medicine and clinician in training in the Medical Scholars Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She completed a dissertation on ideas about food and bodies in Germany around World War I in 2014. In the future, she plans to specialize in pediatric rehabilitation and teach the history of medicine to undergraduate, medical, and nursing students. You can find out more about her and her work at
