CHANDAKA Wildlife Sanctuary
Squeezed and isolated today to meet the demands of rapid urbanisation, Chandaka was once part of the vast Eastern Ghat forests and the Central Indian Elephant Range. Known for its sizeable population of elephants, this forest is barely 20 kms away from the city limits of Bhubaneswar. Covering an area of 193.39 sq km, this sanctuary is spread out on either side of the Old Grand Trunk Road built during the reign of Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century. Chandaka has trees and plants of a numerous species. The plentiful availability of Kumbhi, Bara, Osta, Bamboo, Lajakuli here is a major attraction for elephants for whom the sanctuary provides a safe and secure habitat. Apart from elphants, Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary is home to many other creatures too.

Chandaka Elephant Reserve – 193 sq. kms of the Chandaka forest on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar in the Khurda Uplands were designated as an Elephant Reserve in August 1982. The Sanctuary was marked out to check and restore the depleting forest cover which once covered Bhubaneswar. Conservation management techniques over the last two decades have revived the natural vegetation of the designated area which now supports a variety of wild life.

Stone Age Caves Found in Chandaka, Odisha | MBC TV
A civilisation of the Stone Age has been discovered during a research by the Archaeological Survey of India in Chandaka Sanctuary on the outskirts of Odisha’s capital. A team led by ASI’s Bhubaneswar circle deputy superintendent D.B. Garnaik revealed that there was human habitat in the hill caves located in the north-west of the forest, approximately 4,000 years ago.
During a three-month-long research in the wildlife reserve, the team found ancient stone carvings.
Primary statistics revealed that the artwork on reptiles, weapons and geometrical signs prove that people were living in Parthapur, Kusapangi and Gayalbank, 20 km away from Cuttack and 40 km from Bhubaneswar, at least 3,500-4,000 years ago.
The artworks found from the site are assumed to be of the new Stone Age and Copper Age. The caves inside the hills have been named as Pandav Bakhara, Duara Khola, Tiger Cave, Chanchali Cave, Kalia Taila Cave, Narahari Cave and Anahat Cave.
