CHANDAKA Wildlife Sanctuary
Squeezed and isolated today to meet the demands of rapid urbanisation, Chandaka was once part of the vast Eastern Ghat forests and the Central Indian Elephant Range. Known for its sizeable population of elephants, this forest is barely 20 kms away from the city limits of Bhubaneswar. Covering an area of 193.39 sq km, this sanctuary is spread out on either side of the Old Grand Trunk Road built during the reign of Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century. Chandaka has trees and plants of a numerous species. The plentiful availability of Kumbhi, Bara, Osta, Bamboo, Lajakuli here is a major attraction for elephants for whom the sanctuary provides a safe and secure habitat. Apart from elphants, Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary is home to many other creatures too.

Athgarh's Giant Refugees (Hindi)
Stop the Abuse of the Athgarh Elephants!
On the outskirts of Bhubaneswar city, Odisha, a herd of wild elephants is caught indefinitely in conflict. The situation is a ticking time bomb - and if it explodes, both elephant and human blood will stain the land. Take action before this happens!
Share the link to the campaign video (available in Hindi and English) with Shri. Naveen Patnaik, the Chief Minister of Odisha. Ask him to take urgent action to protect the refugee elephants of Athgarh by:
a. Directing police intervention to control mobs so that the elephants are allowed undisturbed passage.
b. Setting up a task force to effect the restoration of the Chandaka-Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary, and to secure and revive its corridors to the Kapilas Wildlife Sanctuary and the Satkosia landscape in the state.
Send him an email at: cmo@nic.in
With a copy to: editorial@sanctuaryasia.com
And
Tweet to him @Naveen_Odisha with the hashtag #GiantRefugees.

Chandaka forest sanctuary- must visit
We went to Chandaka Forest Sanctuary on 25th May, 2012. The forest is still unexplored. There is no jeep safari till now. We stayed in a newly constructed resort at Dampara gate. The weather is too hot at day time but there is AC rooms. This guest house is still not cited in the web. If you really want to enjoy the forest, select early morning or evening for tracking. You have to take a guide from there. Fortunately we met a person whose name is Firoz Samantaray (ph: 09437696159) who made the trip successful. He guided so nicely that the forest became very interesting. We convinced the range officer to allow us to enter inside the forest core area by their vehicle and managed it twice which made the trip so exciting.
Bharatpur Forest : The Lungs of BHUBANESWAR
It is only when one goes into a forest that he realizes why they are so crucial for human beings.
It is hard to believe a lively green forest like Bharatpur exist in the middle of the sprawling Smart City of Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha. With the remorseless urbanization of the area, this small patch of forest that once adjoined the Chandaka-Damapada forest is now an island of green amidst the concrete jungle all around. It has not lost its identity even as the avarice of man has seen the relentless expansion of the boundaries of urban culture. It has managed to hold on to a patch of sky overhead- to store in its bosom a slice of greenery – the possibility of creation amid the destruction all around. This is the way life moves on – by finding its way through the darkness of nothingness.
Saving the forest in the Bharatpur-Jagannathprasad sector will not only help mitigate pollution, it will also provide a healthier environment to the residents of Bhubaneswar city. All it needs is love, nurturing, and a little space of its own. Just like a tree grows on its own, collecting food and light from the soil and sun but gives us flower, fruit, air and shade selflessly, a forest lives on its own but gives a lot to mankind. In return for the space it inhabits, it gives us oxygen, health and immunity. It balances our ecology by sheltering thousands of animals, birds, flora and fauna. It helps us build a better earth. So, instead of skyscrapers, let’s raise a forest together.
