Dehradun India
Capital of Uttarakhand since 2000, DEHRA DUN, 255km north of Delhi, is pleasantly located just below 700m, as the Himalayan foothills begin their dramatic rise. It stands at the centre of the 120km-long Doon Valley (dun or doon means valley),
Dehradun City
Dehradun /ˌdɛrəˈduːn/ is the capital city of the state of Uttarakhand in the northern part of India. Located in the Garhwal region, it lies 236 kilometres (147 mi) north of India's capital New Delhi and is one of the Counter Magnets of the National Capital Region (NCR) being developed as an alternative centre of growth to help ease the migration and population explosion in the Delhi metropolitan area. Dehradun is in the Doon Valley on the foothills of the Himalayas nestled between two of India's mightiest rivers — the Ganges on the east and the Yamuna on the west. The city is famous for its picturesque landscape and slightly milder climate and provides a gateway to the surrounding region. It is well connected and in proximity to popular Himalayan tourist destinations such as Mussoorie, Nainital and Auli and the Hindu holy cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh along with the Himalayan pilgrimage circuit of Chota Char Dham.
The city of Dehradun mainly lies in Doon Valley and is at a varying height from 410m at Clement Town to above 600 m at Jakhan which is 4 km from the city. However general elavation is 450 mtrs above sea level. Tiuni hills, rising to 3700 m above sea level. The hilly region of Mussoorie goes up to a height of 1870–2170 metres above sea level. Towns in the foothills of the mountain ranges include Mussoorie, Sahastradhara, Chakrata, Lahkhamondal, Gautam Kund Chandrabani and Dakpathar.
This district is divided into two major parts: the main city Dehradun surrounded by Shivalik and the Jaunsar Bavar, which is in the foothills of Himalayas. In the north and northwest it borders on the district of Uttarkashi and in the east by Pauri. In the west, it is bordered by Yamunanagar district of Haryana and the Tons and Yamuna rivers. To the south are Haridwar and Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district.
It is between latitudes 29 °58' N and 31°2'N and longitudes 77° 34' E and 78° 18'E. Ghanta Ghar also known as the Clock tower of Dehradun
Dehra dun has many beautiful old buildings. Unusually in India, house roofs are slanted, as rainfall can often be heavy. As winters can be cold, houses traditionally have a fireplace, even if they also have modern central heating. After Dehradun was made the capital of Uttarakhand there was a construction boom, especially in residential property. Modern buildings have gradually supplanted older architectural styles including those related to the British colonial rule of India. Important older buildings include Clock Tower, Forest Research Institute, CNI College, Morrison Memorial Church, Inamullah Building, Jama Masjid, Osho Meditation Center, Indian Military Academy and Darbar Sahib.

Khalanga war memorial, Nalapani, Uttarakhand
The war memorial stands in the battle field of Khalanga. It is a testimony of valour indomitable courage, highest fighting spirit and supreme sacrifice of Gorkha soldiers, women and children in the battle field of Khalanga during Oct/Nov 1814.
India is proud of the Gorkhas and their historic and valourous link with India. This is one example of our acknowledgement of their contributions to India and South Asia.
In Oct 1814, the British 3 infantry division comprising of 3500 soldiers, supported by heavy artillery guns under the command of Major General Robert Rolle Gillespie was assigned the task to capture Khalanga fort Nalapani, the fort was defended by Balbhadra Singh Thapa and his Gorkha soldiers numbering 500-600 in all (including families and children).
Note: According to one document his name was Balbhadra Thapa and another document says its Balbhadra Kunwar. Kindly help us in identifying correct name.
Owing to Delay in arrival of General Gillespie, Colonel Mawby, in his eagerness mounted the first attack on the fort on 26th October, 1814, after heavily shelling the target, the Gorkha soldiers fought resolutely and repulsed the enemy attack, inflicting heavy causalities in their rank and files. Major General Gillespie afterwards took over the command of the force and launched another attack with all his might, Bhalbhadra Singh Thapa and the Gorkha joined by their women and children stood firm on their ground and fought bravely with their primitive weapons, khukris, arrows and even stones. In the pitched closed quarter battle General Gillespie was felled along with his ADC Capt 'O' Hara and many others, the attackers suffered heavy causalities and once again pushed back, forcing them to seek relief and re-inforcement the incredulous and stead fast display of courage put forth by Gorkha men, women and children assisted by a compliment of Garhwalis and Kumaonis enabled Balbhadra Singh Thapa to defeat the British attack thrice. Later due to very adverse battle conditions and the only source of water supply to the fort having been cut off by the enemy, Balbhadra Singh Thapa vacated the fort on his own with 70 odd remnants on 30 Nov, 1814.

According to mythological stories
Sati was the daughter of Raja Daksha. Lord Shiva and Mata Sati both had a love marriage. Daksha Prajapati made a Bhavey Yagya. Brahma, Vishnu, Indra and other gods and goddesses were invited in Yagya but deliberately did not call Lord Shankar. Raja Daksha didn't invite her Daughter and Lord Shiva. At the altar of sacrifice, Sati asked his father Daksha the reason for not inviting Shankarji and protested against his father. On this, Daksha Prajapati insulted Lord Shankar. Sati, who was suffering from this insult, dedicated his body to fire in his own pace. When Lord Shankar appeared in anger, he separated the head of King Daksha. Lord Shankar started raising the burning body of Sati and started to rotate around the earth in all direction. To save the entire world from the perpetrator, Lord Vishnu, the god of the world, split the body of Sati from the Sudarshan Chakra with the circle. Wherever the body of Sati's body fell on the earth, that place in called Shaktipeeth.
In Surkanda Devi, a portion of the head of Mother Sati was dropped, hence it's known as Surkunda or Sirkunda.
Surkanda Devi is 5km from Dhanaulti, 33km from Mussoorie, 48km from Tehri Dam and 68km from Dehradun. The height of this place is 2750m from sea level.
If you have time, you must come to visit the temple with your family. Mother Surkanda will fulfil your every wish. Jai Surkanda Mata

Army recruitment by Assam Rifles - Indian defence forces
The Assam Rifles is the oldest paramilitary force of India. The unit can trace its lineage back to a paramilitary police force that was formed under the British in 1835 called Cachar Levy. Since then the Assam Rifles have undergone a number of name changes before the name Assam Rifles was finally adopted in 1917. Over the course of its history, the Assam Rifles and its predecessor units have served in a number of roles, conflicts and theatres including World War I where they served in Europe and the Middle East, and World War II where they served mainly in Burma. In the post World War II period the Assam Rifles has expanded greatly as has its role. There are currently 46 battalions of Assam Rifles under the control of the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and they perform many roles including the provision of internal security under the control of the army through the conduct of counter insurgency and border security operations, provision of aid to the civil power in times of emergency, and the provision of communications, medical assistance and education in remote areas. In times of war they can also be used as a combat force to secure rear areas if needed. Since 2002 it has been guarding the India-Myanmar border as per the government policy one border one force.

In the hustle and bustle of north India's fastest growing city, an age-old tradition of goat trading continues! This bazaar is held on Tuesdays in Dehra dun city, and farmers come from as far as Saharanpur and Paonta Sahib to sell and buy goats of various varieties, ages and capabilities. A lot of them are Muslim by religion. The goats are good for milking purposes and for meat. Some are good for studding, too.
