Changdeokgung Palace & Secret Garden | Walking Tour in South Korea #5
Changdeokgung is considered the well-reserved palace in Seoul. Not surprisingly, it became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.
I'm lucky to join this tour in Changdeokgung Palace and Secret Garden last weekend, organized by UNESCO Korea.

Changdeokgung Palace was the second royal villa built following the construction of Gyeongbukgung Palace in 1405. It was the principal palace for many kings of the Joseon Dynasty, and is the most well-preserved of the five remaining royal Joseon palaces. The palace grounds are comprised of a public palace area, a royal family residence building, and the rear garden. Known as a place of rest for the kings, the rear garden boasts a gigantic tree that is over 300 years old, a small pond and a pavilion.

창덕궁 - Walking around Changdeokgung Palace, Seoul, Korea
Changdeokgung (Hangul, 창덕궁, 昌德宮; literally, Prospering Virtue Palace), also known as Changdeokgung Palace or Changdeok Palace, is set within a large park in Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It is one of the Five Grand Palaces built by the kings of the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897). As it is located east of Gyeongbok Palace, Changdeokgung—along with Changgyeonggung—is also referred to as the East Palace (동궐, 東闕, Donggwol).
Changdeokgung was the most favored palace of many Joseon princes and retained many elements dating from the Three Kingdoms of Korea period that were not incorporated in the more contemporary Gyeongbokgung. One such element is the fact that the buildings of Changdeokgung blend with the natural topography of the site instead of imposing themselves upon it. It, like the other Five Grand Palaces in Seoul, was heavily damaged during the Japanese occupation of Korea (1910–1945). Currently, only about 30% of the pre-Japanese structures of the East Palace Complex (Changdeokgung together with Changgyeonggung) survive.

Changdeokgung Palace in Seoul, South Korea
Changdeokgung Palace (창덕궁) is a grand royal residence located east of Gyeongbokgung Palace, in Jongno-gu. Changdeokgung is the best preserved of the remaining Joseon palaces in Seoul.
창덕궁 후원 - Walking around the Secret Garden of Changdeokgung Palace(Huwon), Seoul, Korea
The Secret Garden lies the 78-acre (32 ha) Huwon (후원, 後苑, Rear garden) which was originally constructed for the use of the royal family and palace women. The garden incorporates a lotus pond, pavilions, and landscaped lawns, trees, and flowers. There are over 26,000 specimens of a hundred different species of trees in the garden and some of the trees behind the palace are over 300 years old. The garden for the private use of the king had been called 'Geumwon' (금원, 禁苑, Forbidden garden) because even high officials were not allowed to enter without the king's permission. It had also been called 'Naewon' (내원, 內苑, 'Inner garden'). Today Koreans often call it 'Biwon' (비원, 秘院, Secret garden) which derived from the office of same name in the late 19th century. Though the garden had many other names, the one most frequently used through Joseon dynasty period was 'Huwon'.
In September 2012, the Buyongjeong pavilion in the garden was re-opened after a year-long restoration project. The pavilion was restored based on the Donggwoldo from 1820, National Treasures of South Korea No. 249.
A variety of ceremonies hosted by the king were held in Huwon. In the early period of the Joseon dynasty, military inspections in which the king participated were often held here. King Sejo had troops parade and array before him or commanded them by himself in the garden. In addition, feasts were given, archery tournaments held, and fireworks enjoyed in Huwon.
The Ongnyucheon (옥류천, 玉流川, Jade Stream) area is of particular interest. It contains a U-shaped water channel carved in 1636 for floating wine cups, with a small waterfall and an inscribed poem on the boulder above it. The area also contains five small pavilions.

The UNESCO committee stated the place was an outstanding example of Far Eastern palace architecture and garden design being exceptional because the buildings are integrated into and harmonized with the natural setting and adapted to the topography and retaining indigenous tree cover.
Portions of the palace were used to film the hugely popular Korean drama Dae Jang Geum in the first decade of the 21st century.

*Detailed* Hanbok Rental Guide Changdeokgung Palace
Vlog 21, Day 7 Korea, Anguk Station, Chongbeokgung Palace, Gwangmyung Areas
Today is mainly about the Hanbok rental process with a bit of Palace thrown in there. Chongbokgung palace is the 2nd most popular palace destination in Seoul only preceded by the famous Gyungbokgung located a short distance apart from each other. It's known for its amazing secret garden area which can only be accessed by tour.
We highly recommend you rent a Hanbok as you'll not only be able to take amazing pictures, but they will wave the general admissions for you as well. On this day, we unfortunately arrived a bit late to Anguk station which is the subway station situated exactly in the middle of the two palaces. Because of the lack of time, we decided to rent from the first Hanbok rental location we saw located inside the subway station. This ended up being our favorite even though we later ended up shopping around between 5-6 other places located in the Hanok (traditional korean house) area located in between the two palaces 2 days later when we visited Gyungbokgung palace.
The reason we liked this place is that there were no additional charges. We later realized that the dozens of Hanbok (Korean Traditional Dress) shops scattered around the vicinity of the palaces all had similar Hanboks and the one we chose on the first day was considered a premium Hanbok because of the embroidery and it would cost about 5 dollars more in the other locations.
The other location also charged us for the hair accessories and the underskirt which is essential to keeping your dress looking puffy. All in all we paid about 10 dollars more for the exact same rental 2 days later and wished we just stuck with the first place we rented from shown in this vlog.
One thing I did like about the other locations we visited however is that they were in real shops where possibly you might just feel like it's a premium location... like paying 50 bucks for jeans at Nordstroms that you could get for 30 bucks at JC Penny if you know what I mean... and they offered lockers with individual keys whereas the lady in the subway station just threw our stuff in the bag and you basically had to just trust her to not steal anything which she didn't. They were actually very nice people.
As for the palaces, we visited during a special Holiday week so we got 50% discount on the general admissions which Mayu didn't need because she was wearing a Hanbok and we decided to individually pay 5000 won for the secret garden entrance instead of the 10 dollars for the palace pass since our schedule was tight and we would only be able to visit 2 palaces anyways.
My recommendation is that you purchase the pass however because the secret garden and changdeokgung alone is already 8 dollars unless you're wearing a Hanbok.

Korean Breakfast in Seoul, Korea + Visiting Changdeokgung Palace (창덕궁)
Come join us for our final Korean breakfast in Seoul, Korea as we devour delicious Korean porridge, known locally as Juk, along with kimchi fried rice before heading over to visit Changdeokgung Palace (창덕궁). For our final Korean meal together in Seoul, David and I wanted to grab something delicious and hearty.
David's channel:
This particular Korean restaurant in Seoul specialized in Korean porridge and Korean fried rice. WIth this, in mind, we ordered both Juk and Bokkeumbap. The meal was both tasty and inexpensive.
For our last activity together in Seoul we headed over to Changdeokgung Palace (창덕궁) - one of the many former royal palaces in the city. What made this palace so impressive was just its sheer size and lack of crowds early in the morning. As time went by more people arrived but for a brief period of time we felt like we had it to ourselves.
Anyhow, aside from one more travel blog back to Canada that is the end of our Korea series! Thanks to David for all of his help with this and be sure to check out his channel for all the Korea videos he made as well.

Korean Breakfast in Seoul, Korea + Visiting Changdeokgung Palace (창덕궁):
Hey guys! We are Samuel and Audrey, a vlogging travel couple from Canada. In this travel channel we share our travel and food vlogs while touring the world.
Our most recent trip was to South Korea where I embarked upon a two-week adventure without Audrey. Invited as part of a YouTube vlogging trip, organized by KTO, I spent the first week traveling with other YouTubers in Seoul, Busan and Gyeongju. My second week included independent exploration of Korea with my good friend and fellow YouTuber David of DavidsBeenHere.
Having lived and traveled in South Korea, the chance to return to one of my favorite countries was one of the biggest surprises of 2019. On this particular trip, I had an opportunity to do many things I had not previously covered including a visit to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone between South Korea and North Korea), a Buddhist Temple Stay and a Korean cooking class. It was almost as if the program designed by KTO knew exactly what I had missed out on before.
Obviously, a huge highlight from the two weeks I spent revisiting Korea was the food. I feasted on all of my favorite Korean dishes including Korean barbecue, dolsot bibimbap, haemul pajeon, tteokbokki, bulgogi, kimbap and many others. I can honestly say that Korean food is world-class and is one of my top 5 favorite cuisines in the world. Aside from trying familiar dishes, I had the opportunity to sample raw Korean seafood for the first time.
While visiting Seoul, highlights included going to Gyeongbokgung Palace, Namsan Seoul Tower, Jogyesa Temple and Hongdae. As one of the biggest cities in the world, I barely scratched the surface of things to do in Seoul.
Spending extended time in Busan was my favorite part about the trip with top highlights including a Korean temple stay, fresh fish markets and a Korean baseball game. It was from Busan that we ended up taking a day-trip to Daegu where we enjoyed a traditional Korean market and tried Galbi-Jjim for the first time.
If you want to see more videos from Korea in the future, let us know in the comments what places you'd like us to travel to and what food experiences you'd like to see on this travel channel.
Have you traveled to South Korea before? What was your experience like? Please share your Korea travel tips, advice and experiences in the comments below.
