Archery experts practice at Changlimithang Stadium in Bhutan
Bhutanese men practice their national sport, Archery in Paro. They use traditional bamboo archery kit.
Archery, the national sport of Bhutan, is a common feature of everyday life. It is played differently from the international game and is seen as a celebration of the country's way of life.
Call it love for the game or tradition, most Bhutanese men would not say no to a game of archery. Many of them own a set of the highly priced bow and arrows.
A compound bow - made of fiberglas and pulleys - costs between 50,000 to 100,000 Ngultrum, equivalent to about 1,600 euros.
The sport became very popular in the late 1920s, during the regime of Bhutan's second king, and is now an integral part of everyday life. However, it was only declared as a national sport in 1971, when Bhutan joined the United Nations.
The Bhutanese have been competing in the Olympics since 1984, but archery in the home ground is entirely different - in terms of how the targets are placed and the atmosphere.

Archery or 'Dha', the national sport of Bhutan
Dha- Archery is Bhutan's national sport. In Bhutan, every village has an archery field and there are makeshift grounds are all over the country.
Dha is a male-dominated activity, if not an exclusively male sport, but both female and male tourists are encouraged to try it out. In Paro, you can watch a local match at the town’s archery grounds. If watching some of the world’s best archers doesn’t impress you, you’ll surely be entertained by the chirpy atmosphere of the crowd, colorful victory dances, and friendly heckling.
Bhutan is a unique place where the culture, architecture and countryside remain much as they have for centuries.
