This is CHANIA, CRETE. ???????? Is it the Best city in Greece? What to do in Crete.
We spent a day exploring the beautiful Cretan city of Chania! It can be found on the north west side of the island of Crete (the largest Greek island).
We begin the day at Nea Chora beach, which is right in town. Here you’ll find lots of restaurants and bars along with beach chairs and umbrellas that you can rent for about 5 Euros.
Next we explore the old Venetian city walls which surround the old city. After walk up on the walls we come down to check out the Old Venetian port as well as the lighthouse, which happens to be one of the oldest in the world.
Lastly we explore the cute streets of the old city and stop to try to Cretan pies filled with spinach and mizithra cheese as well as some Greek coffee.

Crete:It is the largest of the Greek islands and is in the Mediterranean Sea between the Sea of Crete and the Libyan Sea, south of the Peloponnese. Crete is approximately 260 km long and 60 km wide. Crete consists of four prefectures: Chania, Rethimno, Heraklion and Lasithi. If there was a beauty contest for Greek islands, Crete would surely be among the favorites. Indeed, some say there is no place on earth like Crete. This view is strongly supported by those fortunate enough to have visited the island. Crete, with a population of approximately 650,000, is not just sun, sea and sand; it is a quite distinct place full of vitality, warmth, hospitality, culture and of course an excellent infrastructure. Crete is well known for its seas and beaches but it has a very contrasting landscape.
Nea Chora Beach: It means new town, and it was the first modern part of Chania outside the venetian fortification wall. New Chora has a fishing harbour and a great beach to enjoy. You will find plenty of traditional cafes and sea food restaurants around the place. It is a great alternative to the old town because you have a beach at your doorstep, great parking place, and some of the best fish restaurants in the area.
Chania (also spelled: Haniá)is the capital city, a place where different civilizations have flourished throughout the centuries. Wandering around the Old Town’s maze-like alleys with the beautiful Venetian mansions, the fountains and the elaborate churches will help you discover well-preserved historical monuments.

Chania Tour - visiting the Monastery of Agia Triada in Crete, Greece (Friday, October 11th 2013)
Website:
CHANIA Port of Call for Navigator of the Seas cruise ship docked in Souda Bay actually - in sunny Crete, Greece
Friday morning (October 11, 2013), we had a TAXI waiting for us in Souda Bay -- pre-scheduled for a day tour (at 30 EURO/hour standard rate). Mano was our driver for the day!
First STOP -- enjoyed a beautiful sunrise and views of our RCI cruise ship from the Souda Bay War Cemetery (British Commonwealth War Cemetery) -- located approximately 5 km east from the center of Chania (Xania).
Next STOP --
The Monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) -- or Tzagarolon Monastery as it is also known -- is one of the most impressive monasteries you will see in Crete.
The Monastery of Agia Triada is located on the Akrotiri Peninsula, north of Chania Prefecture.
It is 15 kilometres from Chania; close to the equally famous Monastery of Gouverneto.
Once again, we were the first to arrive (before the large tour bus caught up to us as their passengers did when we were leaving the Suda Bay Cemetery earlier that Friday morning).
As soon as you enter the gate, you will see the wells and stairs adorned with bougainvillea, oleander and other seasonal flowers, adding a lovely accent to the complex.
This may be one of the few Cretan monasteries where the inner courtyard is so beautiful and well cared for.
The west wing of the monastery is a three-story building and includes vaulted storerooms where the wine and olive oil were once kept, while most of the courtyard is taken up by a large cistern which was used to collect rainwater from the surrounding buildings.
The Monastery of Agia Triada has a distinctive façade with Doric columns, but the elements of Renaissance architecture reminded us that the monastery was built by the Cretan monks Ieremias and Lavrentios (of the Venetian Orthodox Tzagarolos family).
By Orthodox Church tradition, the Patriarch has the right, when a monastery is founded in his jurisdiction, to send a cross which is placed in the foundations and establishes its direct dependence on him.
Monastery of Agia Triada opening hours:
8 a.m. to sunset
Winter :8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then 4 p.m. to sunset
Gentle REMINDER:
Please make sure you are decently dressed when visiting the monastery.
The Monastery of Agia Triada Tzagarolon was built in 1634, on the site of a small church dedicated to the Holy Apostles.
The monastery supports schools in Chania, and a seminary has operated within the monastery itself since 1892.
We visited the monastery church and complex and then wandered round the area for a while.
NOT to be missed -- the large exhibition of woodcarvings and icons in the monastery's Museum.
Inside the complex there was an olive press and a cellar for the wine produced by the monastery, while on the south side is the monastery library, formerly the Abbot's Room.
In recent years the Monastery of Agia Triada Tzagarolon has developed the systematic cultivation of organic vines and olives, and produces excellent wine, tsikoudia (raki), olive oil, honey, vinegar and olive oil soap.
The monastery produces 20 tonnes of organic virgin olive oil per year. It has won international prizes and is mainly sold abroad.
The following wines are produced: dry red Cabernet, dry red Fokiano Romeiko, dry red Merlot, dry white Trebiano
Naturally, all the products of Agia Triada are available for sale from the monastery shop.
We find the Monastery to be a lovely, peaceful and pretty impressive place - certainly worth a visit!

Crete (Chania Souda) 2 Ways To Get Cheap Ferry Tickets
What to see in Chania center? Are you going to get your ferry tickets, first time, in Souda port? You should watch this video. You can book cheap ferry tickets, online, using this resource:
You will get short information, also, about location Chania and Souda port on Akrotiri peninsula and short review of best beaches near Chania.
0:13 I'm going to start from Souda port. It is an important transportation hub in the west part of the island which meets and sends thousands of passengers every day as well as an uncalculating amount of cargo. There is also a NATO naval base located in Souda and across the bay with military accommodation and a hospital in the town.
Much of the command, particularly of US forces, is located across the bay on the Akrotiri. We drove here to get ferry tickets to the port of Piraeus, which we booked online before.
0:45 This is the building of the ferry tickets office where we got our tickets.
GPS 35.487789, 24.074204
You can also get your tickets at the ferry company kiosk directly on the berth.
The kiosk works daily, depends on departure of a ferry.
1:17 2 weeks later this beautiful ship will take us to the port of Piraeus.
Our story about this trip and the details of our cabin will be in the other video.
Subscribe, friends do not miss my next videos from Crete.
1:58 Chania is an incredibly charming city with stunning architecture, The city is located at the western base of the Akrotiri peninsula, located on the north coast of the western part of Crete at a distance of approximately 140 km from Heraklion and 70 km from Rethymnon. on the eastern part of the base there is Souda port. There is also an International Airport (8 km from Chania)
This is Crete's second largest city.
Until 1971, the city of Chania was the capital of Crete.
The city of Chania consists of the old part of the city and the new one, not very different from the modern European city.
Old Town is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Crete. The area of the Old Town is limited to the Venetian fortress wall. And of course, you absolutely can not tell about this beautiful place in two words.
It is hard not to fall in love with the medieval port, around which various restaurants and Venetian houses do not resemble each other.
Chania is called a Pearl of Crete for its beauty.
From year to year, Chania becomes a place of pilgrimage for thousands of artists, writers and poets, taking their inspiration here.
In the city you can visit the following places: the Venetian fortress Firkas, maritime museum, inside, archaeological museum, which is located in the church of St. Francis. And of course don’t forget about Old Chania Market.
6:20 We are on the way to our hotel near Chania now, on the regular bus. It takes 15 min and you can see the best beaches near Chania and a nice park. More details about the beaches and the park are in my special video.

Sfakia, Loutro, Agia Roumeli South Crete
Chora Sfakion (or Hora Sfakion) is a seaside village located 75 km from the city of Chania, on the south coast of the prefecture of Chania, Crete, and is the capital of the region of Sfakia.
This small Cretan village as well as the region of Sfakia, is for those looking for a place to spend their holidays in nature, far away from mass tourism.
This translates either as relaxing on a quiet beach and or go hiking on the beautiful trails of the region.
Therefore, if you are a nature lover, or if you want to get away from the ordinary, this is one of the quiet resorts where you can stay to spend your holiday in Sfakia, Crete.
On the contrary, if you look for a cosmopolitan atmosphere and fun, this is not the right place. Take a look of the other resorts of Chania.
However, wherever you choose to stay, have in mind to visit the region of Sfakia during your daily excursions. You will view breathtaking sceneries.
Agia Roumeli (or Aghia Roumeli) is a small and quiet seaside village located in Sfakia regional unit, on the south coast of the prefecture of Chania, Crete.
Part isolated and not easily accessible, on the north is surrounded by the White Mountains and the Samaria Gorge, and on the south extends the Libyan Sea.
Road network does not exist in Aghia Roumeli. The village is only accessible by ferry from the neighboring coastal areas.
Nevertheless, thousands of visitors pass by Aghia Roumeli each year.
Loutro is a small picturesque seaside resort village located on the south coast of the prefecture of Chania, in the region of Sfakia, Crete.
It is not a real village with permanent residents. It's a resort that operates mainly in the summer season and maybe on weekends or on holidays throughout the year.
Here there are no roads or car traffic, and apart from the ferry that comes and leaves, you will see small boats used either for pleasure or transportation, because the village is only accessible by sea (or walking).
If you are staying at Folia Hotel Apartments which is located in Agia Marina, and would like to visit Sfakia, it is actually quite simple. Of course, it is necessary to have a car for your trip, but a daily bus route is also available. Ask our reception for more details, and also visit our website at for more suggested trips.
