I think that there is a national trend towards sale of locally grown, seasonal produced, seasonal produce, directly to the local communities in which they were raised. I see our role as bringing local producers together with local consumers.

Nowadays all kinds of produce comes from all over the place, from abroad and from the mainland and as a result Okinawan identity has been diluted. Local people don't know where things originated, whether food is produced locally, from the mainland or elsewhere. So I think that what the Atarasu Ichiba farmers market is doing, that is selling local produce to local people is something that particularly young people can learn from.

The reality is that Okinawans no longer know Okinawa. I want them to know even a little about the place that they live, I want local people to know that produce grown in the Miyako Islands is seasonal. I try to reflect this in our menu. We use produce grown in the Miyako islands and use it in season.

Around the world more and more people are buying seasonal, local food in an effort to reduce transport carbon emissions, and promote local producers.
Atarasu Ichiba is a farmers market in Miyakojima in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, which has been encouraging the sale of local produce directly to the community.
STORYLINE:
Connected by ferries and bridges, the Miyako Islands lie a few hundred kilometres from the Okinawan mainland in the East China Sea.
The sea has always provided an important part of the islanders diet and many species of fish that they eat are not available in other parts of Japan.
Similarly there are many vegetables like Goya that are very much identified with Okinawan cuisine and have traditionally played an important role in the local diet.
War, occupation and social changes like the decline of extended families changed patterns of production and consumption in the Islands; factors compounded by the growing influence of large supermarket chains.
Approximately eighteen months ago a new supermarket called Atarasu Ichiba opened.

Aeon Mall in Okinawa Japan is the Japanese version of shopping malls in the States and a great place to shop, eat, and hang out. RYCOM, in particular, is the biggest of the malls on the island. It is complete with a food court, movie theater, eat in restaurant's (our favorite Kura-zushi), and even an Apple Store. Walking through Heiwa Street

Heiwa Street is one of the most energetic shopping arcades in Okinawa. It's laying about 350 meters from by Kokusai Street to Tsuboya District. Its exotic and energetic atmosphere, which is much different from a main street, attracts tourists from other prefectures of Japan and over sea countries.
The history of Heiwa Street started in 1948, after the World War II. At the time, a population of Naha city rapidly increased and street stalls spread over in Kainan district and Makishi district. In 1951, an association of shop owners raked fund for asphalt concrete to cover the street, and the street was named as Heiwa Dori by public participation. 平和通り(Heiwa Street) means Peace Street in English. The name itself means a lot to Okinawan people. After experiencing horrible war, people really needed peace.
Heiwa Street became a shopping arcade in 1979. More than 200 shops offer various kinds of merchandises, so you can find most of what you want in this street. Around near Kokusai Street, there are many souvenir shops for Okinawan traditional artworks and Okinawan food. As walking towards Tsuboya District, there are more shops for locals. Many branches makes Heiwa Street like a maze, and these byways attract tourists, too. Have a fun to get lost in shopping labyrinth!

Okinawa Heiwa Dori Market
This is a video from our trip to Okinawa in 2011. My son and I ventured back off Kokusai Dori into the Heiwa Dori market where they have the best fish market on the island. You can buy fish and seafood, pork and local fish cakes. It is a colorful treat for the eyes and the only place I've ever seen shrimp as big as fish. At one point in this video you see an escalator which leads to a coop of small restaurants where they will cook you a fresh lunch or dinner with the seafood you bring them from the market below.

午前中はホテルにいまして、那覇の街を楽しんでました。
そしておひるごはん。
牧志公設市場の二階でいただくことにしました。
ご存知、一階で買った魚介類を二階で調理してもらえるという。
ちょっと楽しいシステム。
せっかくなので奮発して伊勢海老をお造りでいただきます。
伊勢海老だけではなんなので、脇を刺身の盛り合わせで固めまして。
さらにお気に入りのフーチャンプルー。
こんな豪華なのに、ビールが飲めないのが残念。
伊勢海老の頭は味噌汁になります。
I go to Okinawa again.
I have lunch in Naha.
That's the second floor of the public market.
The Spiny lobster bought at a market is cooked.
And it's possible to eat that at a restaurant on the second floor.
Lobster is sashimi.
I also eat fish sashimi.
And my favorite Fu-chanpuru also ordered.
A head of lobster was cooked for miso soup.
