Chaozhou, China 2018 - chapter 5!
In the summer of 2018, my family and I visited China for the first time.
From the hustle and bustle of Shanghai, we caught a flight to head south to my dad's home town, Chaozhou. Situated in the province of Guangdong, close to Shantou, we visited the West Lake Park, Kaiyuan temple, Paifang Street in the old town and the beautiful Guangji Bridge. Whilst we were there, we were exposed to the Chaozhou dialect, food and of course, Chinese tea!

Chaozhou/潮州 - Day 2 - Ramble Round Southern Guangdong
Chaozhou is a famous historical and cultural city in China. As a Classic Tourist City there are numerous places such as TaiPing Rd (太平路), Guangji Bridge (广济桥), Kaiyuan Temple (開元寺) West Lake (Xi Hu, 西湖), Ming city wall (明城墻). Chaozhou is also famous for its Teochew cuisine/Chaozhou cuisine (潮州菜) influenced by both, Fujian and Cantonese cuisine.
And today you will see a bit of that! Stay tuned for more videos about ChaoShan/潮汕, which refers to ChaoZhou/潮州 and Shantou/汕头 (Chao/潮 + Shan/汕 = ChaoShan), two cities who developing into a single metropolis.

Former Residence of Chen Cihong 中国广东澄海陈慈黉故居
This splendid mansion is located at Chenghai District (澄海区), a short distance from the cities of Shantou (汕头) and Chaozhou (潮州) of China's Guangdong Province (广东省). It is presently a museum, displaying a curious but harmonious mix of east-west architectural influences, with eclectic decorative elements. Many of the decorative ceramic tiles are similar in aesthetic styles as those found in the old town of Malacca. A Peranakan link, perhaps?
This mansion was originally owned by Thai-based Chinese rice mechant Mr Chen Cihong (陈慈黉). Constuction work began in 1922, and spanned many years, but eventually halted during the invasion of the Japanese in 1939.
Despite the passing years, the structural state of this cluster of buildings remains in very good shape, and the aesthetic elements are generally well preserved. Definitely worth a visit!

The moat of ancient Cháozhōu is a tranquil lake inside a park that marks the boundary between the old city and the new. Well-loved by locals, the leafy park is blessed with a mixed but harmonious collection of buildings. Hánbì Building (涵碧楼; Hánbì Lóu), which served as a military office during antiwarlord expeditions in 1925, has a free exhibition showcasing weaponry and the achievements of Zhou Enlai.
Phoenix Building is a fantastical rendition of the symbol of Cháozhōu that sits on a knoll a five-minute walk uphill. Inside the bird, stairs take you past an iron moongate and gourd-shaped ceiling openings, to quirky spaces shaped by the fowl’s anatomy – abdomen tapering into tail, chest sweeping up into neck, openings patterned like wings...you get the idea. It’s attached to a shuttered building (四望楼; Sìwàng Lóu) in a period style reminiscent of ‘70s kung fu movies.

Chaoyang fossil city in China
take a 6-hr driving northward from beijing you will reach Chaoyang city. there are 2 historical towers sitting face to face at north and south. a musuem under the north tower and a Buddha's relics is kept inside, in between there are many difference kinds of fossils for sale, such as fish, plants insect and etc....they said that the first bird on earth began to fly from here.
