Chapada Diamantina Drone Flight: Rugged, rocky & biodiverse nature preserve known for its waterfalls, caves & former diamond mines. The Chapada Diamantina lies at the center of Bahia State, and forms the northern part of the Espinhaço Mountain Range. It has approximately 38,000 km2 (15,000 sq mi) and encompasses 58 municipalities. Technically this region is considered a part of the caatinga biome, and contains some of its highest elevations, most of it above 500 metres (1,600 ft). The vegetation; a product of the physiographic conditions, is known as cerrado, and consists of rocky plains, dry forests, and caatinga desert vegetation, all of witch harbour a great deal of biodiversity and unique endemisms. The regions is considered to have a Mesotermic climate, of the Cwb type, according to Köppen Climate classifications. It is normally quite cooler than its surrounding areas, with an average annual temperature under 22 °C. The territory of the Chapada Diamantina runs roughly between the cities of Mucugê (13°00′S 41°22′W) to the south, Andaraí (12°48′S 41°20′W) in the southeast, Lençóis (12°33′S 41°23′W) in the northeast, and Palmeiras (12°31′S 41°35′W) in the northwest. This region is named the Serra do Sincorá Ridge. However, the city of Ibicoara, near the southern limits of Chapada Diamantina, is also becoming important. The Sincorá Ridge is North–South oriented and has a length of 160 km and 20 to 30 km of width. It has huge canyons with rivers of brownish waters and several waterfalls. The high altitude grasslands are known locally as Gerais. The trails were once used by miners in their search for diamonds. From Lençóis, one of the most important cities in the area, one can find quite a few ecotourism agencies as well as independent guides. Among the main attractions are the Morro do Pai Inácio (Pai Inácio Hill), Cachoeira da Fumaça, Mixila Waterfall, Sossego Waterfall and the Vale do Pati which is considered the best trekking destination in the country. Rock climbing is a relatively new activity, but is developing quickly as some local and outside climbers are opening more and more routes, mainly in the city of Lençóis and at Vale do Capão, district of Palmeiras and at Igatu, district of Andaraí. Lençóis, one of the main cities, is 428 kilometres (266 mi) from Salvador and can be reached by car, bus or plane. Another important city is Iraquara. It has a lot of caves, where prehistoric rock art and other evidence of primitive life can be found. The Range System has an erosional outlier that exposes a contact, the Pai Inácio Anticline. The Pai Inácio Anticline is 25 km wide and exposes the sedimentary rocks of the Paraguaçu group. At the contact there are two different rock groups exposed one being the Chapada Diamantina and the Paraguaçu, with the Chapada Diamantina overlaying the Paraguaçu group. These two rock formations group not only in elasticity, but in composition as well. The Chapada Diamantina is composed primarily of sandstone, pelites and diamond bearing conglomerates. The Paraguaçu is composed of fine-grained sandstones, siltstones and argillites. The rocks of the Paraguaçu are softer and therefore more susceptible to weathering and folding. It is the folds in the Paraguaçu that allows for the entry of water into the rocks structure which in turn is responsible for the erosion. [wikipedia // Google]

The Best of Brazil .
The region became famous during the 19th century for the Diamond exploration, that lasted until 1990, when the National Park was finally founded, considered today one of the most beautiful National Parks in Brazil.
Morro do Pai Inácio
One of the most well known and popular of the Chapada Diamantina’s attractions, the Morro do Pai Inácio, has an altitude of 1,120m and is easy to get to. This popular tourist attraction in the Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina, is found in the region of Palmeiras, and the view from the top of the mountain is truly unforgettable. 250m from the top of the Morro do Pai Inácio you can see the Morro do Camelo, the Vale do Capão and the Morrão, as well as being the spot for one of the Chapada Diamantina’s classic postcard shots: the sunset of the Morro do Pai Inácio.

Poço do Diabo
Poço do Diabo is a Waterfall formed by rio Mucugezinho with about 20 meters tall and has option Rappelling and Zip Lining with 70 meters in length. The high iron concentration is responsible for the dark reddish color of the water. Ponds depth varies 2 meters to 4 meters, it is great for swimming.
Adventure in Bahia, Brazil
I strapped on my sneakers and dove headfirst into all the adventurous activities of Bahia in the Chapada Diamantina National Park--from snorkeling in underground caves, ziplining off cliffs, hiking up mountains and swimming in grottos--this state of Brazil has so much going for the intrepid traveler. Our homebase was Lencois for 4 action packed days. Check out my favorites!

Pratinha
Gruta da Pratinha near Chapada Diamantina National Park is simply beautiful. The crystal clear waters allow you to see quite a bit of the rock formations, and small fish that inhabit the grotto .
The grotto is northwest of the Chapada Diamantina National Park and belongs a company Fazenda Pratinha that charges the entry fee, they also offer many activitiesas as Caiaque, Underwater Pictures, Fluctuation, Zip Line and others for which you have to pay extra.
Lapa Doce Cave
Over 16 miles of the Lapa Doce system have been mapped, but less than 1 mile is open to tourism. Consisting of large galleries which can be nearly 200 feet wide and 90 feet tall, the cave known as Lapa Doce I is rich in speleothems - formations such as stalactites, stalagmites and columns - sculpted by water circulation, dripping, condensation and other processes into shapes which have been named the Nativity Scene, Angel, Sugarloaf, Dog, and so on.
The path includes a descent of about 230 feet. The cave tour lasts about one hour and a half.
Part of the galleries is roped off for protection of the surfaces; no more than 12 people at a time can take the tour, which moves away from the broad cave entrance towards the back at a leisurely pace.
At one point on the tour, the guide asks the group if it's OK to turn off the lantern so you can experience complete darkness. At our group's request, he did it twice - a memorable experience in the depths of Chapada Diamantina.

Chapada Diamantina by Drone | Brazil | Sven & Melody 6 months in South America
In this episode we show you Chapada Diamantina National Park in the Brazilian state Bahia. This cinematic drone video contains aerial footage of the waterfalls / cachoeira's of the park. The Chapada Diamantina is one of our favourite parts of Brazil. We did a three day hike from Lencois to Vale do Capão with our Guide Ito (Surya Chapada)
Music: Sun Collective - The Balance of Nature
To get in contact with our Guide Ito:
The Chapada Diamantina has probably the best hiking in Brazil and is a paradise for swimming in pools and for waterfalls like the stunning Cachoeira Fumaça, which has a 400m vertical drop.
Chapada is a term describing highland plateaus and cliffs and Diamantina refers to the diamonds that were found here and ‘mined’ extensively from the mid C19th.
The mountains are formed by some of the oldest rocks in the world, mainly sedimentary rocks like cuarcites and agglomerate rocks. They form a landscape of flat top mountains (similar to the Venezuelan Tepis) with sheer cliffs rising high above surrounding flatlands. The rocks have an orange colour that looks wonderful, particularly at sunset.
The area is about 400km inland, west of Salvador in Bahia state in the Northeast region of Brazil in the middle of the dry sertão (back-country plains).
It is an important water source with many rivers starting here. These rivers make incredible waterfalls as they fall off the vertical walls of the mountains. The vegetation is of open grassy fields with isolated trees (similar to the African savannah) with some thicker vegetation along the rivers.
At the top of the flat top hills the vegetation is particularly weird and fantastic. Wildlife is not very easy to spot. Apart from humming birds and vultures you are unlikely to see the anteaters or jaguars which live here.
