Controversial monuments in Russia

Since toppling statues of Joseph Stalin, post-Soviet Russians have taken to building monuments to a different national hero in recent years: Ivan the Terrible (Oryol, Russia) — A year ago, Russia built its first monument to tsar Ivan the Terrible, who ruled in the 16th century. When he occupied the city of Polotsk, in Belarus, in 1563, he ordered that all the Jews who refused to be baptized be drowned in the river. Tsar Nicholas II, the last emperor of the Russian Empire. Declared a saint and a martyr by the Russian Orthodox Church seven years ago, the tsar has been depicted in stone embraced by an angel. During his reign, pogroms broke out throughout the Russian empire resulting in the murder of approximately 3,000 Jews. Speaking on behalf of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia, Boruch Gorin said that he understands if the monuments are built out of respect for the lawless execution of Nicholas Romanov, as well as his wife, his innocent children, and his servants. What he does not support, however, is the elevation of Nicholas II to sainthood and honoring him for having been a great ruler of the country, he said. While there are no documents that prove that Nicholas II ordered or directed the pogroms himself, he certainly did nothing to stop them, said Gorin. Anton Denikin (Moscow, Russia) — In 2005, the remains of Anton Denikin, commander of the White forces who fought against the Red Army during the Russian Civil War, were honorably returned to Moscow and a monument was erected on Denikin’s grave. The military forces that Denikin commanded during the Russian Civil War organized pogroms that are estimated to have resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of Jews including women and children.

Схиархимандрит Илий (в миру Алексей Афанасьевич Ноздрин; 8 марта 1932, село Становой Колодезь, Орловский район, Центрально-Чернозёмная область) — священнослужитель Русской православной церкви, духовник братии Оптиной пустыни, личный духовник патриарха Московского Кирилла.

Родился 8 марта 1932 года в селе Становой Колодезь Орловского района (ныне — Орловской области) в крестьянской семье. При крещении в церкви соседнего села Лукина был наречён в честь Алексия, человека Божия. По собственному признанию, молиться начал с трёх лет.

В 1949 году окончил среднюю школу в родном селе. Служил в армии, где старшина уговорил его вступить в комсомол. По возвращении домой он глубоко раскаивался в этом, видя в этом грех против Бога, и тотчас сжёг свой комсомольский билет.
С 1955 по 1958 год обучался в машиностроительном техникуме в Серпухове, а после окончания распределён на работу в город Камышин Волгоградской области. Посещал единственную в городе действующую церковь в честь святителя Николая, где его первым духовником стал священник Иоанн Букоткин, который рекомендовал молодому человеку поступить в Саратовскую духовную семинарию. После закрытия Саратовской семинарии был переведён в Ленинградскую духовную семинарию, а позднее окончил Ленинградскую духовную академию.

В Духовной академии познакомился с будущим патриархом Кириллом: «Я поступил в семинарию, а он в том году кончал академию. И мы его все любили. Он был еще мирянином, просто Алёшей Ноздриным, но отличался удивительным характером и замечательным стилем отношений с людьми.
13 марта 1966 года митрополитом Никодимом пострижен в монашество с именем Илиан в честь одного из сорока мучеников Севастийских. Позднее митрополитом Никодимом был последовательно рукоположён в сан иеродиакона и иеромонаха. Нёс своё служение в разных храмах Ленинградской епархии.

С 1966 по 1976 год провёл в Псково-Печерском монастыре, а под влиянием прочтения книги о Силуане Афонском принял решение о поступлении в Пантелеимонов монастырь на Афоне.
3 марта 1976 года определением Священного синода был направлен нести иноческое послушание на Афоне. Проживал в Старом Русике, исполнял обязанности духовника Пантелеимонова монастыря.

В 1989 году был призван в Россию и направлен в качестве духовника в восстанавливаемую Оптину пустынь. Настоятелем обители архимандритом Евлогием (Смирновым) был пострижен в великую схиму с именем Илий (в честь одного из мучеников Севастийских).

После Поместного собора 2009 года был избран духовником своего сокурсника по Ленинградской духовной академии — новоизбранного патриарха Кирилла.

4 апреля 2010 года на Пасху в кафедральном храме Христа Спасителя в Москве патриархом Кириллом был возведён в сан схиархимандрита.

THEY CALL ME HALLELUJAH: Short Summary - General Ramirez is fighting for the revolution of Mexico against European domination. He hires Hallelujah, a mysterious gunfighter, take down European emperor Maximilian by seizing a purse of jewels intended to be used for the purchase of weapons. This is no easy assignment as he must fight off bandits, secret agents, a fake sister, a so-called Russian prince and other scoundrels!

THEY CALL ME HALLELUJAH: Full Synopsis - A Yankee gunman, Hallelujah, is hired by Mexican Juarista, General Ramirez to confiscate a case of jewels to fund the revolution. For this, Hallelujah will receive a percentage. But other parties are interested in the case and when they turn out to be fakes, it all deteriorates into a cat and mouse style game with Hallelujah, gunrunners, the French, and a Russian outlaw(!) all searching for the real jewels. By the early 70's, the Spaghetti Western genre had made a 180 degree turnaround. After the Trinity films, nobody took the films as serious, so many directors, who wished to stay with the times, began making comedy Spaghettis instead of the dark and dirty films of the 60's. This film is no exception. It is however, very good Spaghetti that has many genuinely hilarious moments. It is very well known to us Spaghetti fans for its over the top excess that makes it all the more unpredictable and fun. These excessive touches include machine guns disguised as sewing machines, bazookas disguised as ukuleles, laxatives (!), and Russians. But it never crosses the border into tedium because each of these are all unexpected and funny. Many people, probably most, would say this is not a comedy. It is far too violent to be a comedy and too much shooting. Well, that does make sense but I believe this to be wrong. Just because it is heavy on killing and violence does not mean it isn't funny. This film is a comedy. A black comedy, yes, but comedy none the less. On looking back, I can remember not one scene that is taken seriously. But I am not trying to be critical. It is funny and a good movie. Anyway, almost every scene is full of comedy. Even a scene that includes hundreds (exaggeration) of deaths like the opening scene, turns into a comedy. It starts all serious like a Zapata western but turns comedic. Hallelujah and Ramirez discuss the terms of their agreement while in a shootout with French troops. Even a scene where a bullet is removed from a wound with a corkscrew is played for laughs! This film is a comedy.

Child marriage is a formal marriage or informal union entered into by an individual before reaching a certain age, specified by several global organizations such as UNICEF as minors under the age of 18. The legally prescribed marriageable age in some jurisdictions is below 18 years, especially in the case of girls; and even when the age is set at 18 years, many jurisdictions permit earlier marriage with parental consent or in special circumstances, such as teenage pregnancy. In certain countries, even when the legal marriage age is 18, cultural traditions take priority over legislative law. Child marriage violates the rights of children; it affects both boys and girls, but it is more common among girls. Child marriage has widespread and long term consequences for child brides and grooms. According to several UN agencies, comprehensive sexuality education can prevent such a phenomenon.Child marriage is related to child betrothal, and it includes civil cohabitation and court approved early marriages after teenage pregnancy. In many cases, only one marriage-partner is a child, usually the female. Causes of child marriages include poverty, bride price, dowry, cultural traditions, laws that allow child marriages, religious and social pressures, regional customs, fear of remaining unmarried, illiteracy, and perceived inability of women to work for money.Child marriages were common throughout history for a variety of reasons including poverty, insecurity, as well as for political and financial reasons. Today, child marriage is still fairly widespread, particularly in developing countries, such as parts of Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, West Asia, Latin America, and Oceania. However, even in developed countries such as the United States legal exceptions mean that 25 US states have no minimum age requirement. The incidence of child marriage has been falling in most parts of the world. The countries with the highest observed rates of child marriages below the age of 18 are Niger, Chad, Mali, Bangladesh, Guinea and the Central African Republic, with a rate above 60%. Niger, Chad, Bangladesh, Mali and Ethiopia were the countries with child marriage rates greater than 20% below the age of 15, according to 2003–2009 surveys.
