Scraping Hights (Songbird Summer Contest Entry)
Ocarina Used: Songbird OoT
I took advantage of my vacation in Mexico to try and film in front of the glorious Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It is considered to be among the 9 largest neo-gothic cathedrals in the world, and the 4th largest church in all of the Americas, with it's towers measuring over 105 meters. It is now over a century old, but it was not completed until December of 2008.
It is a truly amazing piece of architecture. It also houses an enormous pipe organ, and although I would have adored to film inside and show it, I don't think I could have gotten permission.
As for the song, it is partly improvised. I was looking for something dramatic or kind of dark to go with the cathedral yet not necessarily evangelical, but I was having a hard time with my ocarina's higher range (my OoT is the only one I own so far). Maybe it didn't come out to being even closed to what I had envisioned, but there were large choral arrangements accompanying my ocarina in my head :D
It would be great if I make it to any of the final categories. Maybe Best Location?

Now about the video production...
I had previously shot by a lake, but after watching the video at home, I felt I hadn't gotten the best place to really show what the lake is famous for (there were also far more errors than with this one).
My original intention was to film at this cathedral but since it is a very public place I was nervous about playing and about the noise. In the end, I asked my brother if he could help me film this but the first time we went in that day, the sun was getting into the camera and the batteries I had brought died half way through the video... So I then asked if I could go later to try and get one good shot. It was my last day of vacation and my flight was very early in the morning. Among packing, last-minute gift shopping, and spending about 20 minutes finding a parking space versus the 10 minutes of actually trying to shoot, this video came to be. Sadly, in the first one I filmed, the church bells went off and covered the sound of my ocarina...
This is the second shot. Filled with many mistakes, noisy winds, and an overall rushed video. But this contest got me to play my ocarina a lot more in a week than I had throughout all of the time we've had together (a little over seven months). It was also the first time I ever played in public. I've never even played in front of my family. Anywho, I also wanted to share a little bit of this magnificent place with other ocarinists and other people in general.
Hopefully most won't think it was as bad as I do.
