Russia - Sergeyev Posad - Trinity Lavra of Saint Sergius
Sergiyev Posad (Russian: Се́ргиев Поса́д) is a city and the administrative center of Sergiyevo-Posadsky District in Moscow Oblast, Russia. It grew in the 15th century around the monastery Trinity Lavra established by St. Sergius of Radonezh (Russian: Тро́ице-Се́ргиева Ла́вра), the most important Russian monastery and the spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The monastery was founded in 1337 by one of the most venerated Russian saints, Sergius of Radonezh, who built a wooden church in honour of the Holy Trinity on Makovets Hill.
In 1355, Sergius introduced a charter which required the construction of auxiliary buildings, such as refectory, kitchen, and bakery. This charter was a model for Sergius' numerous followers who founded more than 400 cloisters all over Russia.
St. Sergius supported Dmitri Donskoi in his struggle against the Tatars. The monastery was devastated by fire, when a Tatar unit raided the area in 1408.
St. Sergius was declared patron saint of the Russian state in 1422. The same year the first stone cathedral was built. The relics of St. Sergius still may be seen in this cathedral, dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The greatest icon painters of medieval Russia, Andrei Rublev and Daniil Chyorny, were summoned to decorate the cathedral with frescoes. Traditionally, Muscovite royals were baptized in this cathedral and held thanksgiving services here.
In 1476, Ivan III invited Pskovian masters to build the church of the Holy Spirit. This graceful structure is one of the few remaining examples of a Russian church topped with a belltower. In the early 16th century, Vasily III added the Nikon annex and the Serapion tent.
It took 26 years to construct the six-pillared Assumption Cathedral, which was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible in 1559. The cathedral is much larger than its model and namesake in the Moscow Kremlin. The magnificent iconostasis of the 16th–18th centuries features Simon Ushakov's masterpiece, the icon of Last Supper. Interior walls were painted with violet and blue frescoes. The vault contains burials of Boris Godunov, his family and several 20th-century patriarchs.
As the monastery grew into one of the wealthiest landowners in Russia, the village (or posad) gradually developed into the modern town of Sergiyev Posad. The cloister itself was a notable centre of chronicle-writing and icon painting.
In 1550s, a wooden palisade surrounding the cloister was replaced with 1.5 km-long stone walls, featuring twelve towers.
By the end of the 17th century, when young Peter I twice found refuge within the monastery from his enemies, numerous buildings had been added. These include a small baroque palace of the patriarchs, noted for its luxurious interiors, and a royal palace, with its facades painted in checkerboard design. The refectory of St. Sergius, covering 510 square meters and also painted in dazzling checkerboard design, used to be the largest hall in Russia. The five-domed Church of John the Baptist's Nativity (1693–1699) was commissioned by the Stroganovs and built over one of the gates. Other 17th-century structures include the monks' cells, a hospital topped with a tented church, and a chapel built over a holy well discovered in 1644.
In 1744, Empress Elizabeth conferred on the cloister the dignity of a Lavra. Elizabeth particularly favoured the Trinity and annually proceeded afoot from Moscow to the cloister. Her secret spouse Alexey Razumovsky accompanied her on such journeys and commissioned a baroque church to the Virgin of Smolensk, the last major shrine to be erected in the Lavra. Another pledge of Elizabeth's affection for the monastery is a white-and-blue baroque belltower, which, at 88 meters, was one of the tallest structures built in Russia up to that date.
Throughout the 19th century, the Lavra maintained its status as the richest Russian monastery. The monastery boasted a supreme collection of manuscripts and books.
After the Russian Revolution of 1917, the Soviet government closed the lavra in 1920. Its buildings were assigned to different civic institutions or declared museums. In 1930, monastery bells, including the Tsar-Bell of 65 tons, were destroyed. Overall many valuables were lost or transferred to other collections.
In 1945, following Joseph Stalin's temporary tolerance of the church during World War II, the Lavra was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. On April 16, 1946 divine service was renewed at the Assumption Cathedral. The monastery continues as a prime centre of religious education. Important restoration works were conducted in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1993, the Trinity Lavra was inscribed on the UN World Heritage List.

Our Scenic journey sets sail in Moscow and now lands us in one of Russia's oldest towns Uglich.
Leaving the business of Moscow behind Scenic give you the chance to come and have a look at some of the smaller towns here in Russia.
Where tradition is strong the people are absolutely lovely and if you pay with cash there's some cracker deals.
Yep these are the not-so-secret locations that let you save some money and give you a chance to get to know the locals.
David: “and you love all the tourist boats coming in and all the tourists from around the world coming to visit you?”
Tatiana: “I love all the tourists you see and just we even just happy when we see foreigners and when I hear the words oh I have got what I was looking for you see that is the best”
David: “this is the place to shop”
Uglich is a pretty town, with a pretty dark history this was where the son of the first Russian Tsar was murdered and as you can imagine started a pretty serious uproar, the Church of St Dmitry is his legacy.
They were such hard times back then that even the bell was punished for being rung at the time of his death and it was exiled to Siberia for three centuries.. well I guess it won't do that again.
Just a stone’s throw up the Volga River is the world heritage-listed Yaroslavl; an open-air Museum of Russia's colourful past.
The history that surrounds some of these places you get to visit is absolutely incredible, I mean Yaroslavl has just celebrated its 1000th birthday.
The art frescoes in the Elijah cathedral are some of the best preserved in Russia and get this it's only ever been washed once but somehow it's kept its magic, possibly a bit of divine intervention?
This little town is named after Yaroslavl the wise now he's very educated man that's a given but what he was really smart at is that he married his three daughters of to the French the Norwegian and the Hungarian Kings. Now that is how you make some pretty serious allies..
Allies to protect you and your town for centuries.
While we're cruising between ports Scenic give you the chance to try some of the more traditional crafts like matryoshka dolls and these are meant to be our masterpiece, Billy yours is looking alright
Are you happy with that?
I would be concerned I’m the only woman in this
Not woman
I'll tell you now the matryoshka doll competition is not for the faint-hearted.. too much?
The Scenic Tsar is your home away from home while you’re here in Russia and this boat was specifically designed for this kind of cruising.
This technology you and I wouldn't even understand its luxuriously appointed for the more sophisticated among us.
And your private deck is well.. private.
This is one of the newest vessels in Russia so expect the bes, comfort is everything and you can even check in on the captain to make sure it's smooth sailing all the way to St. Petersburg.
Russia - Yaroslavl
Yaroslavl is a city located 250 kilometers northeast of Moscow. The historic part of the city, a World Heritage Site, is located at the confluence of the Volga and the Kotorosl Rivers. It is one of the Golden Ring cities, a group of historic cities northeast of Moscow that have played an important role in Russian history.
The most well-known building in the city is the 'Spaso-Preobrazhensky' ('Transfiguration of the Savior') Cathedral of the Spassky (St Savior) Monastery. This monastery was founded in the 12th century. The Transfiguration Cathedral itself is built in 1516.
Typical for a Russian monastery of the Middle Ages, the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery in Yaroslavl was not built to be no more than a place of worship, but also to be a citadel and kremlin. The monastery is surrounded by a thick 16th century, white-painted wall, complete with watchtowers and embattlements. Within these walls stand the magisterial churches, which, with their asymmetrically-ordered towers and beautifully decorated interiors, make for wonderful examples of traditional Russian sacral architecture.
[
St. John the Baptist Church in Yaroslavl is considered to be the acme of the Yaroslavl school of architecture. It was built in 1671-1687 on the bank of Kotorosl river.
Its walls and dome drums are covered with richly glazed tiles. The entire interior is covered with frescoes depicting Christian saints, St. John the Baptist hagiography and biblical topics. They were painted by Dmitry Plekhanov and Fyodor Ignatyev in 1694-1695.

Father Superior of Pochaev Lavra commented on the claim to seize Lavra from the UOC
Father Superior of the Pochaev Lavra of Holy Assumption Metropolitan Vladimir (Moroz) commented in his interview on the recent claim of Ternopol Regional Council to confiscate the Pochaev Lavra from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and turn the monastery into the state conservation area. It is reported by the UOJ correspondent.
Commenting on the events, Metropolitan Vladimir, father superior of the Pochaev Lavra, tells that clouds have been gathering around the monastery for over 2 years now: politicians, journalists, officials have been trying to defame the sanctity, disseminate fake information, intrude into the smooth life of the monastery. The metropolitan is sure, however, this situation lurks no threat to genuinely faithful minds.
«The folks, being in elated spirits, hurry up to bend and kiss incorruptible relics, to ask of their intercession with God. As we were walking along the streets, we were favorably impressed by such a huge number of people who were participating in the Cross Procession which made us feel invigorated”, the father superior shares his impressions.
“The Ukrainian mass media sometimes highlight what is contrary to the reality, which is painful and disturbing for us to some extent – still there is such evidence. We are a part of the society and therefore, the experience of the Church and Orthodox people is our experience as well. A lot of facts prove our being somewhat despised”, states the Metropolitan. He warned those who have an ill vision of the Church they’d better change their standpoints in order not to lose their souls by committing acts similar to those of the XX century’s theomachists.
Besides, the Lavra’s father superior told about a new Transfiguration Cathedral in which feast worships were held on the occasion of the commemoration of Saints Job and Amphilochius of Pochaev. According to him, the construction of the Cathedral commenced in 2010, yet the first Divine Liturgy and blessing of the water were conducted by the deceased Beatitude Metropolitan Vladimir (Sabodan) as soon as in 3 years after the beginning of construction works.
“Since then we’ve held worship services on big holidays in the Cathedral. We are extremely happy because it can accommodate 2.5 times as much people as the Assumption Cathedral can. I believe if God helps us fulfill our plans and intentions, it’ll be one of the biggest mosaic churches of the world”, the Metropolitan assures.
Metropolitan Vladimir particularly underscored the Holy Mount will extend its hospitality to all those who wish to kneel sincerely and devotionally before icons and relics, and advised to visit the sanctity at least once a year in regular days when a more quiet and slow paced atmosphere offers a lot more possibilities for spiritual enrichment.
Elite Russian Private School Emphasizes Christianity and Patriotism

St. Basil School, outside of Moscow, is trying to revive the traditions of the Tsarist Imperial Lyceum where famous writers and statesmen such as Alexander Pushkin were educated.
The founder of the school, Konstantin Malofeev, a successful Russian businessman, explains the school's values:
the Gymnasium's pupils are taught to be good Christians and patriots.
I think if they are taught to be patriots and if they have faith in God, they will do much more for the future of Russia, as opposed to children whose only goal is to achieve good exam result.
Building people with strong characters and a good upbringing is much more important than education and this is what our school is all about”.

Golden ring of Russia: monastery near Rostov
The Golden Ring of Russia (Russian: Золото́е кольцо́ Росси́и) is a vast area in which old Russian cities are located in a ring-like arrangement and a well-known theme-route. The cities are located northeast of Moscow and were the north-eastern part of the ancient Rus'.[1] The Golden Ring of Russia formerly comprised the region known as Zalesye. The idea of the route and the term were created in 1967 by Soviet historian and essayist Yuri Bychkov, who published in the newspaper Sovetskaya Kultura in November–December 1967 a series of essays on the cities under the heading Golden Ring.[2]
These ancient towns, which also played a significant role in the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church, preserve the memory of the most important and significant events in Russian history. The towns have been called open-air museums and feature unique monuments of Russian architecture of the 12th–18th centuries, including kremlins, monasteries, cathedrals, and churches. These towns are among the most picturesque in Russia and prominently feature Russia's onion domes.
Rostov Velikiy is known as Rostov-Veliky (Rostov the Great) to distinguish it from the larger Rostov-on-Don. It is among the oldest of cities in Russia, having first been mentioned in chronicles in 862. Its most impressive sight is the white-stone kremlin which stands on Lake Nero and is now a museum-reserve. The city also has three monasteries and museums dedicated to the art of painting on enamel for which the city is famed.

Vladivostok - Moscow (May 17 - June 2, 2016)
Vladivostok to Moscow. --- Trans-Siberian Railway Trip, May 17 to June 2, 2016
Our journey started from Vladivostok. Yul Brynner who stared in The King and I was born here; His statue is in front of the house he was born.
The second stop was Irkutsk. The city's old quarter reminded me the scenes from the movie Doctor Zhivago with it's traditional wooden houses and the old trams. As an admirer of the Decembrists and their women, we visited Volkonsky and Trubestskoy's houses. One could tell the owners lived rather extravagant life during their time in the houses. White Army Admiral Alexander Kolchak's statue stands in front of Znamensky Monastery, at the spot he was executed. The monastery also has tomb of Grigory Shelekhov, who claimed Alaska for Russia, and that of the Decembrist wife Ekaterina Trubetskaya.
From Irkutsk, we reached to Lake Baikal via Listvyanka; The amazing beauty of this Lake has to be seen to believe!
Moving on from Irkutsk, the train stopped at Novosibirsk for about 50 minutes, just enough time to taxi to the city center to see the dramatic Lenin statue with flowing cloak.
The industrial city Yekaterinburg is famous for the Cathedral on the Blood, which was built at the location the last Tsar and his family were murdered. We took a local train and then walked for about 40 minutes, along a beautiful, primeval forest, to get to Ganina Yama, visiting the site the bodies of the Romanov family were secretly disposed of originally.
Next, we stopped at Kazan. Ivan the Terrible conquered the Tatars' capital in 1552. Russia's icon, the St. Basil's Cathedral of Moscow was built to commemorate the capture of Kazan. Like Yekaterinburg, Kazan is a financially well to do city compared with other places we visited along the route.
Another over night train took us to Nizhny Novgorod, which was the first of the six golden ring cities we visited during the trip: Nizhny Novgorod, Vladmir, Suzdal, Rostov-Velikiy, Sergiev Posad and Yaroslavl. Rostov-Velikiy is my favorite. It has an unparalleled view of the Kremlin from lake Nero. We also witnessed a Sunday church parade and a Mass in Rostov. Suzdal stands out as an unspoiled village town. Nizhny and Yaroslavl are actually very large cities, their top attractions are the peaceful and scenic river sides. Vladmire and Sergiev Posad both have some most photogenic scenes.
We saved Moscow for the last. Indeed, Moscow proves to be worthy of the capital of Russia! There are simply too many fascinating things to see! The metro is handy, on top of the fact itself is a bona-fide museum.
We visited many Orthodox churches during the trip. Many have magnificent interior. The choral music were serene, peaceful and simply amazing!
The monuments in the country are many. Don't miss Victory park, and all-Russia exhibition center, both of Moscow. The monuments in these two locations are just awe inspiring!
We took the west bound trains for the journey. The east bound direction is more popular with leisure travelers. We had to change trains in each location mentioned above except Novosibirsk. Long distance tickets were either purchased ahead of time ( or at the time of travel in the station. Mid to late May is the shoulder season, it's relatively easy to get train tickets. Local train tickets were easily bought on site.
Train station in big cities usually has resting room with single/double/dorm types and clean linen, charged by the hour. We stayed in such a resting room in Irkutsk as we got there in the early morning. The room was clean, quite and rather spacious.
In May of 2009, I visited Saint Petersburg. Please see the video for the visit:

SERGIEV POSAD
This town's magnificent 14th-century monastery and its history as the holiest of Russia's Orthodox shrines draws pilgrims from around the country, and plenty of non-Russian tourists. The trip serves as a course in Russian architecture and sociology, as well as an immersion into Orthodox traditions. Music enthusiasts can delight in informal choral concerts -- even a small midday church service produces hypnotizing harmonies. The town also claims to be the birthplace of the matryoshka, the ubiquitous nesting doll. Visiting the monastery, matryoshka shopping, and wandering the run-down but charming streets are enough to make this Moscow's most satisfying out-of-town day trip.

(ENG SUB) Russians vandalize orthodox churches in Donbas
One of the biggest orthodox churches in Luhansk region, in the village Troitske, was severely damaged by Russian army shelling. Built in 1840, it survived a civil war 100 years ago, two world war, atheistic rule of communists. It was eventually destroyed by those who claim themselves as 'protectors of orthodox world'. There was no sense of shelling church and school. Ukrainian troops were not stationed here. The nearest army location is 3 km away. Total of 8 Ukrainian orthodox churches were vandalized by Russians in Luhansk region, say Hennadiy Moskal, head of regional state administration.
