The Chapel of Carmelites , is an old Catholic religious building located rue du Perigord , Toulouse (France). Built in the xvii th century and decorated in the xviii th century as a place of prayer convent Carmelites contains a remarkable collection of murals by Jean-Pierre Rivalz and paintings by Jean-Baptiste Despax . It is the only convent building that was not destroyed during the French Revolution . It is classified as a historic monument by decree on February 10, 1909.
The Carmelite nuns of the Reformed branch by Teresa of Avila , had arrived in Toulouse in 1616. They were able to settle in their convent in 1625. The first nuns to come to live in Toulouse came from the convent of the Carmelites of Bordeaux . The new convent was under the direction of Mother Elizabeth of the Angels, coming from Spain after a request made by the Queen Mother, Marie de Medici , to establish the Order in France.
The 1 st July 1622 , the year of the canonization of St. Teresa of Avila, King Louis XIII , accompanied by his wife Anne of Austria , laid the first stone of the chapel. He had pledged 25,000 pounds to complete the construction, but he did not keep his promise. Work had begun thanks to the generosity of Guillaume de Rességuier, president of the investigations of the Parliament of Toulouse and whose five girls had become nuns.
The chapel was completed in 1643 . His plan is very simple: single nave with four bays and a three-sided apse.
Length: 29 m
Width: 10,80 m
Height: 11,80 m
We do not know the architect of the chapel any more than the one who built the Church of the Discalced Carmelites (today Saint-Exupère Church of Toulouse ) which is of a rather similar type. We know that the director of both sites was Didier Sansonnet, stonemason. Other craftsmen appear in the accounts of the Carmelites.
The liturgical choir includes the fourth span and the apse. On the right, in the fourth span, was the choir of nuns isolated by grilles and a curtain according to the rule of Carmel. On the left was the chapel dedicated to Saint Joseph. Two other chapels were on either side of the third bay, the one on the right is dedicated to St. Teresa, the other on the left to St. John of the Cross. The chapel is covered with a low barreled oak paneling supported by ogives. The fallout of the arches and the ogives are supported by bases whose design had to be given in 1676 by Jean-Pierre Rivalz (1625-1707).
