Chapin Forest - Lake Metroparks - Kirtland, Ohio
This is my 9th in a series of videos I will be posting of the Lake Metroparks I will be visiting that are scattered around Lake County, Ohio here were I live.
The 390 acres of Chapin Forest Reservation are known for distinctive rock formations and majestic forests. Wander through 5.3 miles of mature woodland trails comprised of beech, maple, oak, tulip and hemlock. Stop by Quarry Pond and walk Lucky Stone Loop Trail.
To protect this beautiful setting from logging, Frederic H. Chapin purchased
the property in 1949 and donated it to the
State of Ohio. Under a lease agreement with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry, Lake Metroparks manages Chapin Forest Reservation. The ledges, or rocky outcroppings of Sharon conglomerate, were formed about 300 million years ago, long before glaciers slid across northern Ohio. To protect the fragile vegetation and for safety reasons, access to the ledges area is restricted to guided walks, which are regularly offered throughout the year.
Sandstone from Quarry Pond and the adjacent streambed were part of a stone quarry that operated during the 1800s. Berea sandstone from this site supplied the foundations for many local buildings, including the Kirtland Temple, which was completed in 1836.
Chapin Forest has also served as a study site. During the late 1950s, the Ohio Division of Forestry and Reclamation began using Chapin Forest as a research site to determine the growth rates of trees for possible commercial timber production.

Riding Lucky Stone Loop | Chapin Forest Mountain Bike Trail | Lake Metroparks | Kirtland, OH
Chapin Forest Reservation, in Kirtland, OH, has several trails open to mountain biking, totaling about 7.5 miles. Most of the trail consists of crushed limestone double track, which poses no real technical challenge to riders. This is great for those who are uncomfortable riding on the rough terrain and constricted area of single track trail. However, Chapin Forest also has something to offer more advanced riders, as well.
The Lucky Stone Loop trail runs along the rim of the Chapin Forest Ledges for 1/2 mile. As one expect for a ledge trail, the terrain is rough and rocky, which makes for a great place to practice technique. The Lucky Stone rocky section begins with a climb up a steep 60 foot climb at an approx. 10% grade. Several large stones and rooty sections keep the climb interesting. After that, riders face flat elevation but consistently rocky terrain for the next .45 miles. The end of the rocky section has several ledges at a 7-10% grade that are a blast to ride, and lead back to the main trail.
Continuing north on the Lucky Stone Loop for about .1 miles after descending the ledges, riders will encounter a section of single track that off-off shoots from the Lucky Stone Loop trail, and runs along a steep hill. The single track section is rocky as well, but also has several quick changes in elevation, more exposed roots, and a steep descent/ascent with rough terrain at the beginning/end. The additional single track section is very short, totaling just over .25 miles. Despite its pithy distance, it's a lot of fun to ride. And coupled with the rocky section of the Lucky Stone Loop, it provides a great ride and opportunity to develop and refine riding technique.

The easiest way to get to the rocky section and single track offshoot is to park at the Ledges Shelter and ride up to the trail. The Ledges Shelter location, via Google Maps:

Hiking Whipps Ledges | Hinckley Reservation | Hinckley, OH
Whipps Ledges is a must visit area in Hinckley Reservation! It rivals the beauty of the Kendall Ledges in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and the Ledges of Nelson-Kennedy State Park. Local rock climbers regularly frequent Whipps Ledges due to the unique and challenging stone formations that run the length of the 1.25 mile loop.
Although the trail is short in distance, the ledges make up for that by offering fantastic scenery and much to explore. You'll encounter towering cliffs, tight crevices, and small caves. A scramble to the top of the ledges provides a wonderful view of the surrounding forest and rock formations below. Some of the names artfully engraved in the cliffs date back well over 100 years.

Hiking Sand Run to O'Neil Woods | Summit Metroparks | Akron, OH
Our second mega day hike of the season began on the Dogwood Trail, following a steep descent across Sand Run to the Buckeye Trail. The next section of the hike followed the Ohio & Erie Towpath to a short section of the Buckeye trail that runs along the canal, and ends near Bath Road. We then took Bath Road westward, crossing Yellow Creek, until climbing out of the valley via the large wooden staircase on the Deer Run trail in O'Neil Woods.
