Chapman's Peak Drive (South) - Cape Town, South Africa
A late-afternoon drive from Camps Bay to Noordhoek (North to South) along Chapman's Peak Drive - one of the most scenic drives in the world. If you visit the Western Cape area, this drive is a must! Plan on at least 90 minutes so that you have time to make use of the many turn-offs to take in the beautiful scenery. The toll portion starts just south of Hout Bay and cost (as of June 2013) R33.00 - about $3.50 - each way.
I only wish I could have waited an hour later, but it was autumn and a storm was approaching! Enjoy in HD when possible.

Chapman's Peak is the name of a mountain on the western side of the Cape Peninsula, about 15 kilometres south of Cape Town, South Africa. It is opposite the inlet on which the town of Hout Bay is centred.
The western flank of the mountain falls sharply for hundreds of metres into the Atlantic Ocean. A spectacular road, known as Chapman's Peak Drive, hugs the near-vertical face of the mountain from Hout Bay to Noordhoek. Hacked out of the face of the mountain between 1915 and 1922, the road was at the time regarded as a major feat of engineering. Chapman's Peak Drive was closed in the 1990s, after a rockfall caused a death and a subsequent lawsuit, and subsequently reopened after being re-engineered to protect motorists from falling rocks. It was reopened in 2005 as a toll road. The road was again closed for a number of months beginning on 19 June 2008 as a result of risk areas identified on the mountain above the road, but has since been reopened indefinitely.
Chapman's Peak Drive is part of the route of two of South Africa's biggest mass-participation races, the Cape Argus Cycle Race and the Two Oceans Marathon. The top of Chapman's Peak consists of flat, sedimentary rocks related to those that form Table Mountain. The base of the mountain, however, consists of Cape Granite and the two formations meet at a geological unconformity that is world-famous amongst earth scientists.
Two different endangered vegetation types can be found along this road, and correspond to the two main geological formations. They are Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos and Cape Granite Fynbos and they are both endemic to the city of Cape Town, occurring nowhere else.
There is an old, abandoned manganese mine on the northwestern slopes of the peak. The remains of a jetty from which the ore used to be shipped is directly below the workings.
Chapman’s Peak Drive is affectionately known as “Chappies” and is a must for anyone who is passionate about the majestic Cape Town scenery, with sheer drops to the sea below and towering mountains rising above you. The twists and curves in the road seem endless and it is a photographers dream. It is a paradise for motorists, sightseers, picnickers, runners, hikers and bikers.

Chapman's Peak Drive on the Cape Peninsula
The Chapman's Peak Drive on the Cape Peninsula - from Hout Bay to Noordhoek. Behind the toll station starts the most beautiful road in the Western Cape. With a stunning view of Hout Bay and the distintive Mount Sentinel at the entrance to the bay. To the left of the road - wonderful hiking trails into the pristine nature of the Table Mountain National Park. With its unique fynbos vegetation. The proteas are part of it. At Chapman's Point the view is overwhelming. Here starts the most dramatic part of the stretch. Steep rockwalls, narrow serpentine curves and gallery tunnels, and to the right the endless blue Atlantic ocean. Behind the last bend a wide view opens. In front lies the wild sandy beach of Noordhoek. For me the most beautiful beach in South Africa.
Driving around Cape Town - Chapman's Peak
The Chapman's Peak Drive loops along the Atlantic Coast from Noordhoek to Hout Bay, which belong to Cape Town's Metropolitan area.
With 114 curves along the rocky coastline it is one of the famous scenic rides around Cape Town and is therefore quite popular with advertising companies which are shooting ads for cars, etc. there.
It became a toll-road due to quite expensive maintenance-works. So I cut out the waiting line at the point-of-payment... ;)
The second and third cut was made due to a long drive where you didn't see a thing but maintenance works and bushes and stones...
The rest of the drive has been double-timed only.
At 1:25 you can see one of the shark-spotter flags. At that moment there have been good spotting conditions and no sharks... Good for surfers... ;)
The huge beach belongs to Noordhoek and is around 8km long.
This clip is meant to be an afterglow for all my family, friends and fellows who I met at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa 2011/12 and - hemhem - again in 2013. ;)
That was such a great time!

SOUTH AFRICA: Boulders Beach, Cape Point, Hout Bay, Chapman's Peak - AFRICA VLOG PART 7
South Africa has some incredible sights to see. In this part I visited some cheeky penguins at Boulders Beach in Simon's Town, I hiked up to Cape point, the most south-western tip of all of Africa, hiked Cape of Good Hope and saw some grazing ostrich while experiencing gale force winds.
I spent new years day driving to Hout Bay where we took a ferry to seal island and drove the scenic Chapman's Peak drive to watch the first sunset of 2015. It is worth noting that I did all those activities in Hout Bay on 3 hours of sleep and hungover from partying at a wine farm for new years eve. The most I do on a hangover at home is crawl from my bed to the fridge and back, but when you travel a hangover won't stop you from exploring a new country for 16+ hours. In short, I had an amazing time :)

Chapman's Peak is named after John Chapman, the pilot of an English ship becalmed in today's Hout Bay in 1607. The skipper sent his pilot ashore to find provisions, and the name was recorded as Chapman's Chaunce.

In 1991, the road was featured in an advertisement for Mercedes Benz, in which a 1988 car crash was recreated, to illustrate the safety of Mercedes Benz cars.
