Beating Srinagar winters with ‘Wall of Kindness’
| Excelsior News |
The ‘wall of kindness’, a charitable initiative for donating clothes to needy and poor, has reached Kashmir. The charity wall, which was introduced in Iran and from there reached several other countries has now surfaced in Srinagar. The well-to-do families in the city have been donating their warm clothes and more so that those in need can use them to beat the extreme cold.
The people donating these items hang them on what has come to be known as the Wall of Kindness for the needy to come and take them. The wall, which is painted in black and white, has several hangers on which people can hang clothes. The clothes hanging on the wall catch the attention of people who stop to take a look. Locals have, however, appreciated the initiative.

TRIFED would soon make available some of their fine handwoven products which should be available for purchase across our retails stores around the country and online at TribesIndia.com

Memorials in the memory of martyrs of 1999 kargil war. Kargil Vijay Diwas, named after the success of Operation Vijay. On this day, 26 July 1999, India successfully took command of the high outposts which had been lost to Pakistani intruders. The Kargil war was fought for more than 60 days, ended on 26 July and resulted in the loss of life on both sides, India and Pakistan. Pakistan retreated after international diplomatic pressure.
Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated on 26 July every year in honour of the Kargil War's Heroes. This day is celebrated in the Kargil - Dras sector and the national capital New Delhi, where the Prime Minister of India, pays homage to the soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate every year. Functions are also organized all over the country to commemorate the contribution of the Armed forces
Kargil war memorial, built by the Indian army following the war with neighboring Pakistan in the late nineties is frequented by travelers plying the highway connecting Srinagar to Leh. The memorial houses some of the major sequence of events that happened during the course of the war along with details of the Indian army personnel, who sacrificed their lives in the process of recapturing some of the peaks occupied by the Pakistan army; like the Tiger Hill and Tololong.
The memorial has a memento shop, selling hats, T-shirts, coffee mugs etc. But the main attraction of the whole memorial is the Sandstone wall, in the open, which has the names of all the Indian army personnel, who laid their lives during the Kargil war. Visitors to the memorial can also see from there, some of the peaks that the Indian army captured back from Pakistan.
The Kargil war memorial is by the side of the main highway going from Srinagar to Leh in Kashmir.

Workshop on Rafugari begins at SPS Museum
SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 17: Director Archives, Archaeology and Museums, Muneer-ul-Islam today inaugurated 6-Day 'Rafugari' workshop at SPS Museum here.
Convener, Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Kashmir chapter, M Saleem Beg and other officials were also present on the occasion.
The workshop is being jointly organized by INTACH Kashmir Chapter and Community, Craft and Heritage Division INTACH New Delhi.
The Director Archives said that the main purpose of 'Rafugari' workshop is to impart training to the learners to provide them a chance to earn their livelihood and pave way for conservation and promotion of this age-old skill set to repair shawls, in Kashmir valley.
Experts from Najibabad Uttar Pradesh and Old City Srinagar have been roped in to interact and impart Rafugari skills among trainees who have been shortlisted to attend the workshop.
He termed the workshop as an interaction cum training session between practitioners, experts who have national and international exposure.
This workshop is a platform for these trainees to learn new skills from these experts of international repute so that they are able to earn for their living and besides the dying art finds new hands for its sustenance, Muneer ul Islam said.
An official from the Handicraft department said that earlier during Maharaja's time Kashmiri people knew 56 skills but today only 26 skills have survived and one among these 26 is Rafugari which is dying a slow death.
He said the number of Rafugar's has declined from last 30 to 40 years which has become a cause of concern for the government, and added that none has been applying for Darner's or Craft instructor post in Handicraft's Department resulting in posts lying vacant from years.
Meanwhile, Director Archives said that conducting such workshop has been a learning experience for them and after learning outcomes and making proper observations, future courses will be chalked out.
Organizing such workshops will be a regular feature in other streams as well like a workshop on preserving artefacts, maintaining labs and etc, and for this, we will collaborate with preservation and maintenance institutes who will teach our staff the preservation of artefacts and maintaining labs, Muneer Ul Islam said.
Pertinently the Rafugari workshop that began today will culminate on 22 September 2018 with the distribution of certificates among participants.

‘Wall of Kindness’ comes up in Kashmir
The ‘wall of kindness’, a charitable initiative for donating clothes to needy and poor, has reached Kashmir.
The charity wall, which was introduced in Iran and from there reached Pakistan and several other countries, has surprisingly surfaced on The Bund in Srinagar.
Behind the initiative, which has received applause from people on social media, is the Kashmir chapter of WhoisHussian, a charitable organisation inspired by Hazrat Hussain (RA) and spread in several countries.
On the wall people can keep clothes apart from other articles for the needy, who can pick them up without having to move from door-to-door.
The concept is based on anonymity, so that both the giver and sender remain anonymous without lessening dignity of people in need.
The wall, which is painted in black and white, has several hangers on which people can hang clothes.
