Chapters Closes in Downtown Vancouver
Chapters on Robson and Howe Street has decided to shut its doors.
The store is set to close at the end of June.
Indigo Books says a significant rent increase is making it difficult for the company to turn a profit at the location.

The Hidden Story Behind Vancouver's Twin Peaks
The Lions are two of the most famous mountain peaks in Canada. But they have a much, much older name that's tied to a story from long before the city was founded.

You can read the full story of “The Two Sisters” as told to Pauline Johnson by Joe Capilano here:
You’ll find many of the others legends found in the book on that same fantastic Legends of Vancouver website too, along with a map for a walking tour of many of the landmarks—most of them in Stanley Park:
This episode, maybe even more than any other we’ve done so far, relied on collaboration beyond our little team of four.
First off, we want to thank Stefany Mathias so much for reading the passage from “The Two Sisters”. As we mention in the episode, she’s the great-granddaughter of Joe and Mary Capilano and one of sixteen hereditary chiefs of the Squamish Nation. She’s also an actor who you might know from shows like DaVinci’s Inquest and Longmire. It’s a dream come true to have her read that passage. You can follow her…
On Instagram:
Twitter:
And Facebook:
If you’d like to learn more about the history of the Squamish Nation, they share a bit more about it on their website:
We were also honoured to be guests on the territory of the Six Nations near Brantford, Ontario, while we were filming at Chiefswood. Pauline Johnson’s birthplace and childhood home is a national historic site now, which you can visit yourself:
The Six Nations shares a bit more about the history of the Haudenosaunee on their website, too:
Johnson loved Vancouver’s natural surroundings, and spent long hours exploring the city’s waters in her canoe. She even did a little renaming of her own while she was there: coming up with a new moniker for a little tidal bay that has been turned into a permanent lake in Stanley Park. The Squamish called it Ch'ekxwa'7lech; the settlers called it Coal Harbour; Johnson wrote a poem about it called “The Lost Lagoon” and that’s still the name it’s known by today.
Fun fact: Johnson was the very first Canadian woman to appear on a stamp. And just a few years ago, she was one of the five women picked as finalists when the government was deciding who to feature on the new $10 bill. (They eventually picked Viola Desmond, who might be in your wallet right now.)
We’d also like to thank the family of Ben Lim. He’s the North Vancouver artist who did the illustrations for the 1961 edition of Legends of Vancouver, which is an absolutely gorgeous little book. We’re thrilled to have been able to use his art in our episode. Sadly, he passed away in 2016, but he left a remarkable artistic legacy behind, including extraordinary ceramic sculptures of the wildlife of the West Coast.
You can check out some of those sculptures from the Doodlebug Dabblings blog, and see how his work inspired children who visited his 2016 exhibition at the Seymour Gallery, here:
And finally, we’d like to thank the Seymour Gallery, as well. They’re a not-for-profit who’ve been bringing art, performances and education programs to North Vancouver since 1985:
Those giant old trees that used to tower above the forest floor in the places where Vancouver’s glass skyscrapers now stand weren’t only coveted by the city’s own settlers. Some of them were chopped down to be sent off to China on the order of the Celestial Emperor of China. He used them to make huge beams — dozens of them — which are now part of the Gate of Heavenly Peace in Beijing’s Forbidden City. You may also know that gate by its Chinese name: The Tiananmen. And if you’re interested in Chinese gates, then oh boy, do we ever have an episode for you:
Oh, and while we’re at it, we’ve also got an episode about King Edward VII — the monarch that Joe Capilano petitioned on his trip to London. Or, at least, about a statue of the king that stands in a park outside the Ontario legislature in Toronto, but which used to stand outside a 400 year-old fort half a world away:

Canada Vlogs 2019 ???????? Day 1 - Travel Day to Vancouver!
Welcome to the first installment on my 2019 Canada vlogs! Day 1 is travel day, and I travelled from my home in London to Heathrow, then direct to Vancouver with Air Canada. After a very length immigration queue, I went to my hotel, which was the Hyatt Regency in Downtown Vancouver.
After freaking out about how good the view was, I went out to explore Vancouver! I went to Canada Place and watched a Celebrity Cruise Ship sail away from the Port of Vancouver, watched the sea planes and helicopters taking off and landing, saw the giant orca statue, listened to some free live music, and walked around a lot. I stopped at a crazy busy bookstore and went to get some essential groceries, then looked around some shops. Stay tuned for my shopping haul!
No wonder I was tired after all that...
If you enjoyed this video, please stick around as I have vlogs coming from my time in Victoria, Banff, Jasper, Whistler and lots of places in between. It was an amazing trip and it just kept getting better!
If you have any questions about the trip, leave a comment and I'll always get back to you! Thanks for watching :)

WE HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO LEAVE CANADA
WE HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO LEAVE CANADA
Sometimes things don't work out the way you want it to be, but sometimes it's for the best.
We weren't able to extend Justina's Visa but we also didn't want to go back home.
We took a huge risk and with just a month left on our working holiday visa, we decided to book one way flight tickets to Malaysia to start the new chapter of our lives.
Some people will think we are crazy as will have no stable jobs or income and some people will praise us for our bravery. But you know what? We will give it a go, we will give 200% of ourselves to make this work.
We see this as a huge opportunity to live our dream life and we said to ourselves: ‘’ When is the better time to do it if not now? ‘’
You guys have been a huge support to us throughout our travels and we hope that we won't let you down.
We love every single one of you and always here to brighten your day.
SO let's begin our new adventures, let's show the world that WE CAN DO THIS!

Dana Collette - The Art of Teaching - Chapter 4
This video offers a look at the instructional techniques of Vancouver Island University (VIU) instructor Dana Collette. The video also provides a look at how Dana Collette teaches her students valuable tools for inquiry.
Dana Collette serves as a teaching professor at Vancouver Island University (VIU) in British Columbia, Canada. Working at VIU since 2002, Dana teaches Commercial Law, Negotiations, Business-Government Relations, and Principles of Management. She has also taught Introduction to Criminal Law, Computer Law, Computers & Society, and Law & Technology.
Dana Collette earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Victoria in 1999. Dana then went on to study law at UVic Faculty of Law, receiving her Juris Doctor in 2003. During her last year of law school, she also qualified for a Real Estate License from the University of British Columbia. During her last term of law school, Dana worked as a legal advocate at the Law Centre where she received the 2003 Faculty of Law Award for Excellence in Community Law.
Dana practiced real estate at DFH Real Estate Ltd. in Victoria from 2003 to 2005. During that time and following, she also completed several contracts related to privacy law for the B.C. provincial public sector, including at the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner and the government ministry responsible for privacy and access legislation.
In the beginning of her career as an educator, Dana taught on the subject of computers and society at VIU (then Malaspina University-College) and UVic. In 2006, Dana started teaching full-time at VIU in the Faculty of Management.
In 2007, Dana started the Law Network for business students. With the help of a colleague in Political Science & Liberal Arts, that network evolved to become the VIU Law Network, linking VIU students and alumni who have a common interest in law. Dana also helped to establish the Canadian Academy of Legal Studies in Business, a national organization for Canadian business law teachers.
In addition to her role as educator, Dana has more than twenty years of experience in management and marketing in the private and public sectors. Dana also has administrative, interpersonal, public speaking and group facilitation experience.
Fluent in Spanish, Dana has worked as an interpreter in the past.
Outside of academia, Dana has a variety of passions that include home design and photography.
