These days people appreciate what we do. At first they did not - even my family thought of me as lowly. But nowadays it's hard to find work and they can see that I'm getting something out of it.

There are many things that you look for in a stone, the shape, the size. Whatever you want to sculpt there, sometimes the stone can tell you, it can give you an idea, sometimes you can impose an idea on a stone. So there are many approaches.

Usually, especially me, I work with the shape of the stone. It's not like I have the piece in my brains or something. But the stone itself can talk to you, it can show you the piece that's inside. When you look at stone take a good look at it, talk to it can show you the picture. The piece is there already, just remove the un-needed objects

Zimbabwe is home to some beautiful modern stone sculptures.
Many artists work and display their sculptures in parks across the country's capital.
And despite the political and social upheavals in the country of late, sculptors are continuing to carve local stones into statues and sculptures.
STORYLINE:
In a peaceful park in the Zimbabwean capital Harare, sculptures carved from local stone dot the landscape.
This is the collection of stone sculptures held at the Chapungu Sculpture Park.
The collection was established over thirty years ago in Zimbabwe, then known as Rhodesia.
It was moved to its present park location in 1985.
It is one way Zimbabwean people express themselves, the sculptures often reflecting the world they lived in.
The park now has an international reputation and an avid following amongst some international art collectors.
One sculptor at the Chapungu Sculpture Park Benjamin Katiyo says people are slowly recognising the value of stone sculpture.
The sculpture park is known to hold one of the world's most extensive collections of Zimbabwean stone sculpture.
But it is not the only one in the city.
Dombodzvuku sculpture park is also in Harare - newer and smaller than Chapungu.
Wayne Tsindi, himself a sculptor and also the curator at Dombodzvuku sculpture park, says he takes the shape of the stones as his inspiration.
And Lovemore Bonjisi agrees.
He says the stones talk to him - giving him ideas on what to carve next.
Stone carving has grown into an industry that sustains hundreds of artists and their families in Zimbabwe and tourists used to come from all over the world to see and buy sculptures.
Recently, though, this has suffered a downturn because of political upheaval.

Chapungu Village Traditional Music & Dance Performance

Live 'n' Direct - A Walk Through the National Gallery of Zimbabwe
Jam TV - Over 300 artists from Zimbabwe submitted work for the Live 'n' Direct exhibition which was officially opened on Africa Day, 25th May 2010. In attendance were Harare Mayor Muchadeyi Masunda, Spanish Ambassador Pilar Fuertes Ferragut, National Arts Council Director Elvas Mari, National Gallery Director Doreen Sibanda among other guests. A panel of judges selected Gareth Nyandoro's piece, National Recyclenziliation, as the winning entry, earning him US$10 000. Misheck Masamvu came second for his piece Sweet Bad Breath. Chenjerai Mutasa was third for Tazah (Visionaries for a unified Zimbabwe). The 2nd and 3rd prizes were US$5 000 and US$ 3 000 respectively.

ROAD TRIP - DAY 14 - Denver Botanic Gardens, Colorado
Okay, so this really isn't part of the 'Road Trip' as the Botanic Gardens is less than a mile from my home. But I was still on vacation and this was still an 'experience'. They were hosting Chapungu sculptures from Zimbabwe, absolutely beautiful art.
