LEBANON: FRENCH PRESIDENT JACQUES CHIRAC VISIT
French/Arabic
French President Jacques Chirac has affirmed his country's support for Lebanon's role in the Middle East peace process.
Chirac was speaking at the end of his historic, three-day visit to Lebanon.
He's the first Western leader to visit the war-wrecked former French colony since the 1975-1990 civil war.
At the hilltop presidential palace, French President Chirac spoke to reporters.
He expressed confidence in the Lebanese people, and stressed his country's desire to help find peace and stability in the region.
SOUNDBITE (French):
The peace process based on U-N resolution 425 -- requires guarantees. France is prepared to help the Lebanese army and Lebanese internal security forces maintain security along borders with Israel.
SUPER CAPTION: French President Jacques Chirac
After the press conference, Chirac made a surprise stop at the Beirut home of his mentor, Charles de Gaulle. Hundreds of well-wishers came out to greet the French leader.
De Gaulle lived here for three years during colonial times-- 1929-1932. Lebanon became independent from France in 1943.
Hoping to reach as many French residents living in Lebanon as possible during his stay, President Chirac held a massive outdoor meeting at the Palais de Pins. Chirac announced the palace would be the official French ambassador's residence.
On Friday night, Lebanon's guest of honour was treated to a heroic welcome outside the Prime Minister's palace in Beirut. Thousands waved Lebanese and French flags, shouting Vive la France.
Chirac kept his promise to Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri -- to help rebuild the country's once spectacular capital. Lebanese and French officials signed financial agreements worth over a 100 (m) million dollars.
Hariri invited prominent Lebanese and French citizens to the honourary banquet held for Chirac. He thanked his guest for his support.
SOUNDBITE:
The Lebanese people appreciate the French collaboration with our people, and appreciate your past and future political role in Lebanon. Our people -- recently out of a civil war-- are thankful.
SUPER CAPTION: Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri
Chirac repeated his wish that Lebanon and Israel find peace.
SOUNDBITE (French):
France is very attached to the idea, and predisposed, if the Lebanese and Israelis wish- to participate in this peace process.
SUPER CAPTION: French President Jacques Chirac
He then conferred France's highest award, the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor, on Hariri, for his efforts in rebuilding the country.

LEBANON: BEIRUT: FRENCH LEAD RETURN OF WESTERN BUSINESSMEN

French/Nat
Lebanon's former imperial rulers are flocking back in droves.
The French are leading a return of Western businessmen to Lebanon after the long civil war which made the city a no-go area for more than a decade.
Gallic expertise is helping rebuild the capital Beirut, and French products are again becoming the choice of Lebanon's moneyed classes.
Lebanon's capital Beirut is beginning to re-establish itself as the Middle East's mecca of international trade.
A decade and a half of fighting between rival Christian and Muslim factions left this formerly tolerant and prosperous city in ruins.
Now it's regaining much of its old lustre.
Lebanon's billionaire Prime Minister Rafik Hariri has ordered a massive rebuilding programme.
The work is being financed by the Mouaward Society and entrusted to Solidere, both of them Lebanese companies.
But many of the most difficult tasks have been sub-contracted to French companies -- among them Alcatel and Methodes et Pilotage.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
Our work here essentially consists of managing the contracts for the Mouaward company and on behalf of Solidere, and bringing to bear our experience to the planning and the management of other projects being carried out by the Department of Infrastructure and Solidere.
SUPER CAPTION: Yves Jacquelin, Chief Engineer - Methodes et Pilotage
France had almost a century of involvement in Lebanon before the country was granted independence in 1943.
The two country's shared history is still visible today in Beirut.
Former French President Charles de Gaulle lived here briefly before the Second World war.
And Beirut still boast a French military cemetery, final resting place for the men who protected the French protectorate.
The French Cultural Institute remained active during most of the civil war, only closing its doors during the height of the conflict.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
For more than 30 years France has carried out educational and cultural work here in this sector between east and west Beirut -- a symbolic place. There was a very small gap during the years of conflict, just five years, during which time the service was moved outside Beirut. But since 1990 France came back here and began repairing its building in 1993.
SUPER CAPTION: Jean Claude Voisin, Director French Cultural Centre in Beirut
The present French President, Jacques Chirac, visited Lebanon in October, cementing relations between the two countries.
Chirac's visit was a measure of the importance the French government attaches to trade links with Lebanon.
French products are highly valued in Beirut.
And with the economy showing positive signs of recovery, there are a growing number of people who can afford to buy imported merchandise.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
I wanted to come to Lebanon for the first time because it's a market which interests me and I like the Lebanese very much.
SUPER CAPTION: Marie Antoinette Bousket, French exhibitor
Haunted by the nightmare of a recent and bloody civil war, the Lebanese look back fondly on the period of stability and prosperity their country enjoyed under French rule.
This nostalgia has been translated into a passion for French style and all things fabrique en France. (made in France)

AWESOME Liftco elevator WITHOUT INNERDOORS - Beirut, Lebanon
Lebanon = ELEVATOR PARADISE !
Elevators in Lebanon are so different than the ones we have in Europe !
There are so much innerdoorless elevators ! Some of them have survived the war (1975-1990), but a lot of the innerdoorless elevators are new, from 1990 until... today ! Lebanon is one of the last countries where you can still find brand new innerdoorless elevators !
This elevators has fixtures from the 1990s, but the cab and the building itself look older. There are bullet impacts on the outside walls of the building, so this building dates back from before the war (1975).
In Lebanon, there's a mix of European and Asian brands. My hotel has Toshiba.
I've been to Lebanon for 3 days, I only filmed about 10 elevators :(
But don't worry, I'm 90% sure that I'll go there again next year.
There are so much things to say about Lebanon that writing them would last 3 hours !

Lebanon
Lebanon (/ˈlɛbənɒn/ or /ˈlɛbənən/; Arabic: لبنان Libnān or Lubnān; Lebanese Arabic: [lɪbˈneːn]; Aramaic: לבנאנ), officially the Lebanese Republic (Arabic: الجمهورية اللبنانية Al-Jumhūrīyah Al-Libnānīyah; Lebanese Arabic: [elˈʒʊmhuːɾɪjje l.ˈlɪbneːnɪjje]), is a country in Western Asia. It is bordered by Syria to the north and east and Israel to the south. Lebanon's location at the crossroads of the Mediterranean Basin and the Arabian hinterland has dictated its rich history and shaped a cultural identity of religious and ethnic diversity.
The earliest evidence of civilization in Lebanon dates back more than seven thousand years, predating recorded history. Lebanon was the home of the Phoenicians, a maritime culture that flourished for over a thousand years (c. 1550--539 BC). In 64 BC, the region came under the rule of the Roman Empire, and eventually became one of the Empire's leading centers of Christianity. In the Mount Lebanon range a monastic tradition known as the Maronite Church was established. As the Arab Muslims conquered the region, the Maronites held onto their religion and identity. However, a new religious group, the Druze, established themselves in Mount Lebanon as well, a religious divide that would last for centuries. During the Crusades, the Maronites re-established contact with the Roman Catholic Church and asserted their communion with Rome. The ties they established with the Latins have influenced the region into the modern era.

Charles André Joseph Marie de Gaulle (; French pronunciation: [ʃaʁl də ɡol] (listen); 22 November 1890 – 9 November 1970) was a French army officer and statesman who led the French Resistance against Nazi Germany in World War II and chaired the Provisional Government of the French Republic from 1944 to 1946 in order to establish democracy in France. In 1958, he came out of retirement when appointed President of the Council of Ministers by President René Coty. He was asked to rewrite the Constitution of France and founded the Fifth Republic after approval by referendum. He was elected President of France later that year, a position he was reelected to in 1965 and held until his resignation in 1969. He was ...

Known as “Lebanon Conscience”, Raymond Edde is one of Lebanon’s most venerated statesmen. A strong nationalist and a powerful intellect, he served his nation as a member of the Parliament, as a minister, and as a legislator. He was renowned for his consistent patriotic views, his opposition to any non-Lebanese armed force operating on Lebanese soil, and his devotion to mend fences between Lebanon’s warring communities; this rich and evocative three-hours documentary cleverly depicts the history of one of the last political giants, and the life of the man who lived and died dreaming of a better Lebanon.
Edde sponsored reforms in Lebanon’s rent and banking laws: ones that proved to have contributed to the economic growth in the following decades. He advocated Civil Marriage as a way to diminish inter-religious hatred and later succeeded his father as Head of the National Bloc in 1949. After the outbreak of the civil war in 1975 and following three attempts on his life, Edde left his heartland and took refuge in exile, in Paris. He died in the year 2000, leaving a lasting national and legislative legacy. His last words were: “I’m thinking, I’m thinking of Lebanon.”
