Charles Darwin at Down House
Down House belonged to the ingenious English naturalist Charles Darwin, who lived here for 40 years until his death in 1882.
After moving to the house in 1842, Darwin and his wife, Emma, remodelled the house and its extensive gardens, which Darwin used as an open-air laboratory. It was here that Darwin developed his theory of evolution by natural selection and wrote his groundbreaking work 'On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection' (1859).

Suzy Quatro - Hey Charly (HD) - Visit at Charles Darwin's Down House near London, England
Photos to the song “Hey Charly” by Suzy Quatro. Photographs were taken while visiting Charles Darwin’s home, Down House, near London, England. It is located about an house outside London. Charles and Emma Darwin purchased Down House in 1842. They arrived with two small children and had 8 more at Down House. Both lived there until their passing.
In 1859, Charles Darwin published his groundbreaking, “On the Origin of Species.” In the 40 years that he lived at Down House, he published 20 more books and monographs. His ideas on how the earth and living creatures changed over vast periods of geologic time was based on the basic principles of evolution: adaptation, variation, inheritance, extinction, divergence, and selection. While controversial at the time, later advances in science, especially genetics and molecular biology, established his ideas as indisputable facts in the scientific world. These concepts have lead to advancements in medicine, ecology, and numerous other realms of the natural world. Charles Darwin is firmly established as the “Father of Evolutionary Biology.” Other, particularly Alfred Russel Wallace, were simultaneously reaching the same conclusion. Darwin agonized over publishing his findings as he knew the ramifications in the Victorian Era. Like Galileo Galilei before him, his ideas, while at first considered heretical, eventually became a lens for understanding the natural world.

The Making of Charles and Emma Darwin’s Bedroom
More than 100 years after it was dismantled and dispersed, English Heritage has recreated Charles Darwin’s bedroom at his home, Down House, in Kent.
This was the bedroom in which the revolutionary scientist died in 1882 and where, for 20 years, he enjoyed reading and resting, recovered from various illnesses, and kept a watchful eye on his experiments in the garden from the room’s large bay window.

A Visit to Darwin's House near Downe
I don't know exactly what I was expecting to see at Darwin's house near Downe. I had read the scholarly account of his life by Adrian Desmond and James Moore at least twenty years before. His study, of course, where the great man wrote his papers and books. The famous pebble walk with the forest he planted. Something inspirational; something personal? I went through the house where British Heritage has its shop with pleas for added donations. I shuttled through rooms crammed with displays and information, but the four rooms which affected me were: Darwin's Study (not a place where I could study or write); the large sitting room; Charles and Emma's bedroom (with a bay window overlooking the garden) where he would read to her on the four-poster bed; and the room with thier family tree displayed on a large poster.
However, it was not until I took the 'Sand Walk' and imagined Darwin walking there, that the whole experience came to life for me. The vivid moment was discovering that the 'Sand Walk' was actually a bed of stream-rounded flint pebbles. Darwin was walking on the cryptocrystalline evidence of sponges in the ancient ocean that formed the chalk beds of England and France and he didn't know it.
