Charleston cracks down on rickshaws
Police in Charleston, SC are cracking down on illegal rickshaw drivers, making sure permitless pedal-pushers aren't taking advantage of tourists. The police sting involves undercover officers dressed as tourists going on sightseeing rides around the city. Charleston requires its rickshaw drivers to take an extensive history exam. RT's Liz Wahl takes a look at the consequences of giving rickshaw tours without a license.

1st Annual RIDEdwin July 30, 2011 Charleston, SC off Ashely River at Lockwood Blvd
EDWIN GARDNER thought it was cool, fun, and efficient to get around Charleston on his bicycle. Plenty of other Charleston residents feel the same way. They'll celebrate Edwin and the bicycle, his preferred mode of local transportation at 9am this Saturday (July 30) for the first annual RIDEdwin. The Rally/Ride starts and ends at Cannon Park at the corner of Calhoun and Rutledge.
Edwin died one year ago after being struck on his bike by an auto. But RIDEdwin isn't a mournful event. I hope we get a lot of people together to make our city a safe place to ride bikes, says architect Whitney Powers, Edwin's widow. (She and their daughter Olive continue pedaling their bicycles all over the Charleston peninsula.)
The pre-ride rally will be brief and the short, safe (police-escorted) ride should be fun for everyone, children included. Organizers are also asking pedicab operators to show up in numbers in case there are participants who would prefer paying to ride instead of pedaling. Food and beverage (provided by local restaurants, markets and bakeries) will be provided after the ride. (Route takes riders south to the Battery and north again to Cannon Park.)
Gardner served his community in many ways. He conducted his life as he believed. He was a skilled kayaker and a boat builder. He founded the Mosquito Fleet in order to teach people — especially underprivileged youth — about our maritime history and about the joys of being on the water. His attention was focused broadly, beyond bicycles and boats or any single issue. But his latest contributions as a member of the new Peninsula Task Force deal directly with alternative forms of transportation, bicycles, pedicabs, CARTA and more.
Organizers hope the RIDEdwin will keep Gardner's vision for a better community alive and galvanize people to pitch in to make it happen.

Marching Band Wedding in Downtown Charleston
What did you wish you had at your wedding? A marching band! And bicycle taxis to transport the old people. This was a Navy wedding we spotted in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. Not sure if the marching band is a southern thing, or what.
White Point Garden Bandstand
Mayor Joe Riley has recently decided that the renovated gazebo on the battery's White Point Garden can be used for un-amplified concerts. The concerts must cease at 11 p.m. and can only be acoustic in nature. Residents south of Broad Street have mixed opinions on the proposed concerts, but overall there seems to be some positive hype about a new cultural outlet in downtown Charleston.

Boris the Landrover breaks down again - this time in Napa
In the never ending quest to break down in every state of the United States of America, Boris the Land Rover most recently refused to run while visiting the beautiful wine regions of California. Bailey the superdog and I amused ourselves standing around outside a rental car place.... sigh

collin and tyler are two of the kindest people you will ever meet! they both have huge hearts, and smiles that light up a room. it only stands to reason that they were high school sweethearts. their love for one another has withstood the test of time, and it is easy to see how much they mean to one another. their wedding at the william aiken house was nothing short of spectacular. after a quick chat through their tin can telephone, they were ready to walk down the aisle and say i do. collin's grandfather, papadoc, delivered a sweet ceremony and their adorable pug, mac, barked in agreement as soon as they sealed their vows with a kiss. the evening was filled with much love and dancing as everyone celebrated collin and tyler's big day. we wish them many more years of big smiles and happy hearts!
