Memphis, Tennessee, United States. Economy, Climate
Memphis is the second largest city in the state of Tennessee and the second largest metropolitan area in the state after Nashville. Memphis is an older city. Memphis is one of the most expansive cities in the United States. Memphis is a regional center for commerce, education, media, art, and entertainment.
LOCATION
The state rests in the southeastern portion of the United States. Memphis is on the southwestern corner of Tennessee, with the Mississippi River and the state of Arkansas bordering it to the west and the state of Mississippi to the south.
HISTORY
The city of Memphis was founded on May 22, 1819 (incorporated December 19, 1826) by John Overton, James Winchester and Andrew Jackson. They named it after the ancient capital of Egypt on the Nile River. Memphis developed as a trade and transportation center in the 19th century because of its flood-free location high above the Mississippi River.
Memphis played a prominent role in the American civil rights movement and was the site of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in 1968.
POPULATION
The city's demographics changed dramatically in the 1850s and 1860s under waves of immigration and domestic migration.
CLIMATE
Memphis has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons
Winter weather comes alternately from the upper Great Plains and the Gulf of Mexico, which can lead to drastic swings in temperature. Summer weather may come from Texas (very hot and humid) or the Gulf (hot and very humid). July has a daily average temperature of 82.7 °F (28.2 °C).
Early autumn is pleasantly drier and mild, but can be hot until late October. Late autumn is rainy and cooler.
Winters are mild to chilly, with a January daily average temperature of 41.2 °F (5.1 °C). Snow occurs sporadically in winter.
Memphis is extremely hot in the summertime, and the humidity can make you feel even hotter! Those who have trouble tolerating high heat and humidity may wish to avoid visiting during July or August.
ECONOMY
Since the civil rights era, Memphis has forged forward to become one of the nation's leading commercial centers in transportation and logistics. The city's largest employer is the multinational courier corporation FedEx, which maintains its global air hub at Memphis International Airport, making it the second-busiest cargo airport in the world.
The city's central geographic location has been strategic to its business development. Located on the Mississippi River and intersected by five major freight railroads and two Interstate Highways. Memphis is ideally located for commerce in the transportation and shipping industry.
its outlying areas were developed as cotton plantations, and the city became a major cotton market and brokerage center.

Driving Downtown - Nashville 4K - USA
Driving Downtown Streets - Broadway - Nashville Tennessee USA - Episode 44.
Starting Point: Broadway - .
Broadway is major thoroughfare in Nashville, Tennessee. It includes Lower Broadway, a renowned entertainment district for country music.
Landmarks
Lower Broadway consists of Broadway between First and Fifth avenues. Its features include the Bridgestone Arena, the Nashville Convention Center and various honky tonk bars, including Robert's Western World and Tootsie's Orchid Lounge.[2] The Ryman Auditorium and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum are both within one block of this area. Lower Broadway is a particularly crowded place during the annual CMA Music Festival.
Nashville is the capital of the U.S. state of Tennessee and the county seat of Davidson County. The city is a center for the music, healthcare, publishing, banking and transportation industries, and is home to numerous colleges and universities. Reflecting the city's position in state government, Nashville is home to the Tennessee Supreme Court's courthouse for Middle Tennessee. It is known as a center of the country music industry, earning it the nickname Music City U.S.A.
Tourism
Perhaps the biggest factor in drawing visitors to Nashville is its association with country music. Many visitors to Nashville attend live performances of the Grand Ole Opry, the world's longest running live radio show. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum is another major attraction relating to the popularity of country music. The Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center, the Opry Mills regional shopping mall and the General Jackson showboat, are all located in what is known as Music Valley.
Nashville has several arts centers and museums, including the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art, the Tennessee State Museum, the Johnny Cash Museum, Fisk University's Van Vechten and Aaron Douglas Galleries, Vanderbilt University's Fine Art Gallery and Sarratt Gallery, and the full-scale replica of the Parthenon.
Economy
As the home of country music, Nashville has become a major music recording and production center. All of the Big Four record labels, as well as numerous independent labels, have offices in Nashville, mostly in the Music Row area.[44] Nashville has been home to the headquarters of guitar company Gibson since 1984. Since the 1960s, Nashville has been the second-largest music production center (after New York) in the U.S.[45] As of 2006, Nashville's music industry is estimated to have a total economic impact of $6.4 billion per year and to contribute 19,000 jobs to the Nashville area.[46]
Although Nashville is renowned as a music recording center and tourist destination, its largest industry is health care. Nashville is home to more than 300 health care companies, including Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), the largest private operator of hospitals in the world.
The automotive industry is also becoming increasingly important for the entire Middle Tennessee region. Nissan North America moved its corporate headquarters in 2006 from Gardena, California (Los Angeles County) to Franklin, southwest of Nashville. Nissan also has its largest North American manufacturing plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. Largely as a result of the increased development of Nissan and other Japanese economic interests in the region, Japan moved its former New Orleans consulate-general to Nashville's Palmer Plaza.
Bridgestone has a strong presence with their North American headquarters located in Nashville, with manufacturing plants and a distribution center in nearby counties.
Other major industries in Nashville include insurance, finance, and publishing (especially religious publishing). The city hosts headquarters operations for several Protestant denominations, including the United Methodist Church, Southern Baptist Convention, National Baptist Convention USA, and the National Association of Free Will Baptists.
Nashville is also known for some of their famously popular Southern confections, including Goo Goo Clusters (which have been made in Nashville since 1912).[50]
Fortune 500 companies with offices within Nashville include Dell,[51] HCA, Bridgestone, Community Health Systems, Nissan North America, Tractor Supply Company, UBS and Dollar General.

Preview of the Democratic National Convention
(3 Sep 2012) While most Americans celebrate their holiday weekend, honouring Labour Day Monday with a day off work, the political atmosphere is heating up in Charlotte, North Carolina, a day before the second of the nation's two big political conventions gets underway.
Six thousand delegates, along with tens of thousands of support staff, reporters and security, are descending on the southern city on Monday in time for the Democratic Convention's official kick-off on Tuesday.
Temporary fences have been erected and many downtown buildings were sporting red, white and blue signs welcoming the delegates.
Roads in the city centre have already been closed in time for the Democrat Party's three-day long convention.
Political reporter Jim Morrell, from the local Charlotte Observer newspaper, said after a year and a half preparation, it's showtime.
Linh Hong, a delegate from Virginia, arrived declaring that Charlotte was going to host a better convention than Tampa did for the Republicans,
I think we know how to party and I think we know how to put together conventions, he said.
San Antonio delegate Verna Blackwell Hilario showed her support for President Barack Obama by painting his name on her fingernails with the colours of the US flag.
We have a great president and we are here just to rally him and support him and show that Texas may not be a blue state, (Democratic state) but someday it will.
Political memorabilia sellers have already set up their booths and are selling everything from aprons and t-shirts to the ever-popular badges.
The latter are already a big hit with delegates - especially those that feature slogans such as 'Tennis Players for Obama,' 'Retirees for Obama,' and 'Bartenders for Obama.'
Journalism and political science Professor Ferrel Guillory, from the University of North Carolina, says the decision to pick two southern cities to host this year's political conventions highlights the emergence in the South of new metropolitan areas that will have enough voters to sway presidential elections.
It is an affirmation, it is a recognition of how metro areas like Charlotte, and Tampa in Florida and Raleigh in North Carolina or Nashville, in Tennessee - all of these emerging metro areas of the South have become the heartland of America, he said.
Outside the security perimeter, protesters were already making their presence felt.
Two people were arrested Sunday after several hundred members of the Occupy Charlotte group marched through city streets.
On Monday, union members marched in support of Labour Day and against corporate involvement at the conventions.

Nashville is the capital of the U.S. state of Tennessee and the county seat of Davidson County. It is located on the Cumberland River in Davidson County, in the north-central part of the state. The city is a center for the health care, music, publishing, banking and transportation industries, and is home to a large number of colleges and universities.
Nashville has a consolidated city-county government which includes seven smaller municipalities in a two-tier system. The population of Nashville-Davidson County stood at 635,710 as of 2009, according to United States Census Bureau estimates. This makes it the second most populous city in the state after Memphis. However, the 2009 population of the entire 13-county Nashville Metropolitan Statistical Area was 1,582,264, making it the largest metropolitan area in the state. The 2009 population of the Nashville-Davidson--Murfreesboro--Columbia combined statistical area was estimated at 1,666,566.
The downtown area of Nashville features a diverse assortment of entertainment, dining, cultural and architectural attractions. The Broadway and 2nd Avenue areas feature entertainment venues, night clubs and an assortment of restaurants. North of Broadway lies Nashville's central business district, Legislative Plaza, Capitol Hill and the Tennessee Bicentennial Mall. Cultural and architectural attractions can be found throughout the city.
The downtown area of Nashville is easily accessible. Three major interstate highways (I-40, I-65 and I-24) converge near the core area of downtown, and many regional cities are within a day's driving distance.
Nashville's first skyscraper, the Life & Casualty Tower, was completed in 1957 and started the construction of high rises in downtown Nashville. After the construction of the AT&T Building in 1994, the downtown area saw little construction until the mid-2000s. Many new residential developments have been constructed or are planned for the various neighborhoods of downtown and midtown. A new high rise office building, The Pinnacle, was recently opened in 2010.
Many civic and infrastructure projects are either being planned, in progress, or recently completed. A new MTA bus hub was recently completed in downtown Nashville, as was the Music City Star pilot project. Several public parks have been constructed, such as the Public Square. Riverfront Park is scheduled to be extensively updated. The Music City Center, a convention center project, has been approved for the downtown area and is currently under construction.

On November 4, 2016, the National Socialist Movement gathered for a rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The event was four days before the US presidential election and featured speeches given by NSM commander Jeff Schoep and National commander of the America First Committee, Arthur J. Jones Jr. At the rally, leaders discussed how Donald Trump's presidential campaign has brought white supremacism into the mainstream and legitimized their beliefs. Mark Potok from the Southern Poverty Law Center contextualizes the event with his discussion of how Trump has created political space for extremists by courting the support and validating the beliefs of groups on the alt-right. The rally closed with discussion of how the neo-Nazi groups plan to organize a show of force on Election Day.
