The New Brunswick Museum
The New Brunswick Museum, located in Saint John, New Brunswick, is Canada's oldest continuing museum. The New Brunswick Museum was officially incorporated as the Provincial Museum in 1929 and received its current name in 1930, but its history goes back much further. Its lineage can be traced back another eighty-eight years to 1842 and to the work of Dr. Abraham Gesner.
Abraham Gesner was born in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia in 1797. His childhood fascination with scientific experiments led him to study in London, England where he became a physician. After only a few years of practice in Nova Scotia, he moved to New Brunswick in 1837 to become a full-time geologist. In 1838, he became New Brunswick's Provincial Geologist - the first such appointment in Canada. This position lasted until 1842 when Gesner turned to making a living by displaying his collection of rocks, minerals and curiosities to the public.
On April 5, 1842 Gesner opened the Museum of Natural History, the precursor of the New Brunswick Museum, in one room of the Mechanics' Institute on Carleton Street, in Saint John. Unfortunately, income from his newly founded museum was not enough to solve Gesner's financial problems. In 1843, his collection passed on to his creditors who, in turn, donated it to the Saint John Mechanics' Institute.
Renamed the Mechanics' Institute Museum in 1846, an annual report dating from 1863 described it as, a large and valuable collection of minerals, a great variety of zoological specimens, and many Chinese, Indian and other curiosities [that] frequently receives additions from foreign sea captains and others who get into their possession foreign articles of an attractive description.
When the Mechanics' Institute closed in 1890, the Natural History Society of New Brunswick acquired the collection and the museum was moved, first to the then new Market Building then, in 1906, to 72 Union Street. Under the care of its curator and later director, the entomologist Dr. William McIntosh, the museum's collections and activities expanded until a new building was essential. In 1934 a new Provincial museum facility on Douglas Avenue was officially opened by Prime Minister R.B. Bennett.
As of 1942, the collections, building and properties of the museum officially became the property of the people of New Brunswick. Today a Provincial institution funded by the Province of New Brunswick, the New Brunswick Museum continues to collect, preserve, study and exhibit the Province's natural and cultural heritage. As well as having a remarkable natural sciences collection, the museum has expanded to include one of the largest collections of 19th century decorative arts and Canadiana in the Atlantic Provinces.
By 1992, the museum had outgrown its Douglas Avenue location, and plans were made to develop new exhibition galleries in a central Saint John location. In April 1996, the New Brunswick Museum officially opened at Market Square in leased space in uptown Saint John (45.2729°N 66.0651°W). The Market Square Exhibition Centre offers three floors and 60,000 square feet (6,000 m2) of exhibition spaces and a wide range of public programs. The Collections Centre, the Archives and Research Library, and the Head Office continue to be situated at the Douglas Avenue location.

N.B. braces for more severe weather - Environment Canada forecasts more flooding for St. Stephen
New Brunswick is bracing for another bout of severe weather even as many communities are still cleaning up after the floods that battered the southwest region of the province last week.
Flood waters began to recede in St. Stephen on Dec. 19. Environment Canada is warning more severe weather could hit the province on Tuesday.Flood waters began to recede in St. Stephen on Dec. 19. Environment Canada is warning more severe weather could hit the province on Tuesday. (CBC)
Environment Canada has issued a weather warning for the majority of New Brunswick.
A snowfall warning is in effect for the northwest part of the province and a wind warning is predicted to hit northern areas.
St. Stephen, which was one of the hardest-hit areas by last week's flooding, may see another 45 millimetres of rain by Tuesday evening.
The forecast is calling for northeast winds that could hit 70 km/h in the town.
Environment Canada warns the resulting storm surge and rough and pounding surf along the coasts will combine with a run of high tides to give local flooding starting Tuesday afternoon or evening.
Claude Côté, an Environment Canada meteorologist, said he doesn't believe the forecasted weather pattern will cause as much damage as last week.

To maybe somewhat reassure people, last week's storm that caused significant flooding in the Charlotte County and greater Fredericton area, we had up to 105 millimetres of rain. So with this system we're not looking at the same type of precipitation amounts, Côté said.
St. Stephen received 174 millimetres of rain early last week.
Local MLA Rick Doucet said he is worried about the forecast that is calling for more rain.
I'm just taking one day at a time here. We want to concentrate on getting things done and just hope to God this doesn't happen again, Doucet said.
Last week, many homes in southern and western New Brunswick were damaged in the flooding caused by heavy rains.
Karl Wilmot, an official with the provincial government's Emergency Measures Organization, said the St. John River should be able to cope with the upcoming rain and snow without causing more flooding.
Flows are not going to exceed plant capacity at [NB Power's hydro dam at] Mactaquac, Wilmot said.
So hopefully the situation is not going to change any on us. We're below flood stage all along the system.
Compensation questions
Now, the residents are trying to qualify for government funding to help them repair their property.

At a couple of weekend meetings in St. Stephen with provincial government officials, tempers flared at the delays in the process of getting compensation.
Government officials say assessments of the damage and how much repairs will cost must be done before the compensation process can begin.
Two private businesses, Cooke Aquaculture and J.D. Irving, have offered to pay for private insurance adjusters to speed up the process of getting the required work done so residents can qualify for disaster assistance.
Another problem is the approaching holidays, which means provincial government services may be shut down for several days.
Donations coming in
Many groups are raising funds to help families cope with the aftermath of the extreme weather.
The Town of St. George has set up a special disaster relief website listing where people in the southwestern community can drop off donations and what items are needed, such as bottled water.
The Canadian Red Cross is also accepting donations to help the relief efforts.
The TD Bank Group donated $10,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to support the residents in southwest New Brunswick and the Fredericton area.
TD requested the donation be used to help the recovery efforts and offer shelter and comfort stations for the people who fled their homes during the floods.
The damage caused by the harsh weather has left the entire community struggling to recover, said Dan Culligan, district vice-president of TD Canada Trust, New Brunswick, in a statement.
Our hope is that this donation, combined with the relief efforts of the Red Cross, will give residents the immediate support they need.
