Charlottenburg Palace, the Largest Palace in Berlin
Charlottenburg Palace is the largest palace in Berlin, Germany, and the only surviving royal residence in the city dating back to the time of the Hohenzollern family.
The palace was built at the end of the 17th century and was greatly expanded during the 18th century. It includes much exotic internal decoration in baroque and rococo styles. A large formal garden surrounded by woodland was added behind the palace, including a belvedere, a mausoleum, a theatre and a pavilion. During the Second World War, the palace was badly damaged but has since been reconstructed.
The palace and grounds are a major visitor attraction. For an admission charge, parts of the interior of the palace are open to visitors, including the Old Palace and the New Wing. The Old Palace contains many rooms with baroque decoration, and includes a room called the Porcelain Cabinet, which holds thousands of porcelain objects. On special display are the crown jewels and the royal silver and fine porcelain tableware.
The New Wing includes the opulent rococo State Apartments of Frederick the Great and the more modest Winter Chambers of Friedrich Wilhelm II. The formal and informal gardens are freely open to the public. For an admission charge, the Mausoleum, the Belvedere and the Neue Pavilion are open to visitors. The Mausoleum contains the graves of, and memorials to, members of the Hohenzollern family. Also open to the public are the Belvedere, which contains a collection of Berlin porcelain, and the Neue Pavilion, which houses a collection of arts and crafts of the period when Schinkel was active.
The former Palace Theatre is now a museum of prehistoric archaeology. The former Orangery houses a restaurant and café.

Sophie Charlotte of Hanover started with the construction of the palace in 1696. It was inaugurated in 1699. From this time it served Charlotte as residence. At the time, the palace consisted only of a small core part. Her spouse Elector Frederick III used it as summer residence.
In 1701 Frederick was crowned King of Prussia and Sophie Charlotte as Queen. The palace was constantly expanded at that time. Only after the death of Charlotte in 1705, the palace was renamed Charlottenburg .
Frederick William I of Prussia used the castle for a few representation events.
1940 King Frederick II (The Great, Old Fritz) made Charlottenburg Palace his residence, but moved already in 1744 into the City Palace in Potsdam. He had built Sanssouci as summer residence and Charlottenburg Palace then served only for family reunions.
Charlottenburg Palace got its final shape under Frederick William II of Prussia. In the years to come, Frederick William III, Frederick William IV and Frederick III lived here.
During World War I, a hospital was housed in the palace. In the 2nd World War it was severely damaged by bombing and restored again until 1957.
Parts of the palace are now a museum. Among other things the apartment of Frederick II. and art collections can be visited.
Since 1971, the Belvedere, originally a tea-house, houses the porcelain collection of the city State Berlin.
As nature was something wintry, we decided not to take a tour in the palace garden.

Sophie Charlotte von Hannover begann 1696 mit dem Bau des Schlosses, das 1699 eingeweiht wurde. Von nun an nutzte es Sophie Charlotte als Residenz. Zu jenem Zeitpunkt bestand es nur aus einem kleinen Kernteil. Im Sommer nutzte ihr Gemahl Kurfürst Friedrich III. als Sommerresidenz.
1701 wurde Friedrich zum König von Preußen und Sophie Charlotte zur Königin gekrönt. Das Schloss wurde in jener Zeit ständig erweitert. Erst nach dem Tod von Charlotte 1705 wurde das Schloss in Charlottenburg umbenannt. Unter Friedrich Wilhem I. wurde das Schloss nur für wenige repräsentative Anlässe genutzt.
1940 machte König Friedrich II. („Der Große“ , „Alter Fritz“) das Schloss zu seiner Residenz verlegte diese aber bereits 1744 in das Stadtschloss in Potsdam. Als Sommerresidenz ließ er sich Schloss Sanssouci errichten. Das Schloss Charlottenburg wurde danach lediglich für Familienfeiern genutzt.
Unter Friedrich Wilhelm II. erhielt Charlottenburg seine heutige Form. Danach diente es noch als Wohnraum für Friedrich Wilhelm III., Friedrich Wilhelm IV. und Friedrich III.
Im ersten Weltkrieg war im Schloss ein Lazarett untergebracht. Im 2. Weltkrieg wurde es bei Bombenangriffen schwer beschädigt und bis 1957 wieder restauriert.
Teile des Schlosses, unter anderem die Wohnung von Friedrich II. und Gemäldesammlungen sind als Museum zu besichtigen. Im Belvedere, ursprünglich ein Teehaus, ist seit 1971 die Porzellansammlung des Landes Berlin untergebracht.
Da die Natur noch etwas winterlich war, haben wir auf einen Rundgang im Schlossgarten verzichtet.

It is Berlin’s largest palace which was built in 1699 by Elector Friedrich II for herwife Sophie Charlotte. It was rebuilt in 1950s afterbeing damaged during World War II. The statue of Fortuna, the goddess of happiness, can be found in the tower and the Belvedere Teahouse. The Old Place, which is one of its attractions, consists of royal apartments, a collection of Japanese and Chinese porcelain, silverware chambers and baroque rooms.

Sophie Charlotte, the first Queen consort in Prussia, was not only an accomplished musician, playing the harpsichord and singing Italian opera, but also strolled through the grounds here with her friend, the renowned scholar and philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. When Sophie Charlotte died, just 36 years old, the palace and the area around was named Charlottenburg after her. Today, this is the largest and most magnificent palace in Berlin – a highlight for any Berlin visitor.
Sophie Charlotte of Hanover was the younger sister of George Louis of Hanover, who succeeded to the British throne as George I. In 1684, she married Friedrich III, the Elector of Brandenburg and the then Duke of Prussia. Friedrich gave Sophie Charlotte a large estate and the village of Lietze/Lützow, at that time still outside Berlin, and this was the site of her summer palace. Completed in 1699, it was initially known as Lietzenburg Palace. Sophie Charlotte, a great lover of the arts, invited poets, philosophers, musicians and artists to join her at her “court of the muses”. Even her husband King Friedrich I could only visit if she personally invited him. After her death, Friedrich named the palace and the surrounding area Charlottenburg in her honour.
Sophie Charlotte was not the only Prussian queen to leave her mark on Charlottenburg – so did Queen Louise, who was much revered by the general populace. She died in 1810, and is buried in the mausoleum with her husband, Friedrich Wilhelm III, and her son. In the course of the nineteenth century, Charlottenburg Palace was gradually forgotten by the royal rulers. From 1880, it was no longer classified as a royal residence, and the grounds were opened to the public. In the Second World War, the palace was badly damaged, though it was later rebuilt.
In the Neuer Flügel (New Wing), you can view the staterooms and the rococo ballroom known as the Goldene Galerie (Golden Gallery). The Silver Vault includes quite stunning tableware of gold, silver, glass and porcelain displayed on laid tables. Around 100 table services have survived intact, a vivid reminder of the magnificence of dining at court. The impressive display of the remaining pieces of the Prussian crown jewels, complete with the imperial insignias, as well as personal treasures, such as the elaborated designed, exquisite snuffboxes collected by Friedrich the Great, are also well worth seeing. The Porcelain Cabinet in the Old Palace - re-opened on 1st October, 2017 - offers a breathtaking collection of the finest blue-and-white porcelain decorating the entire room.
Once Sophie Charlotte strolled through the park, celebrated lavish festivities here and enjoyed these magnificent baroque gardens. The park and grounds were designed by French landscape architect Siméon Godeau, a pupil of André le Nôtre, principal gardener of Louis XIV of France at Versailles – the model emulated by all court gardens across Europe in the baroque era. But the fashions in landscaping changed down the years, and Sophie Charlotte’s successors re-designed the grounds in the fashion of their day – as an English-style landscaped park. The highlights in the park are the mausoleum, the Belvedere tea house and the Neuer Pavillon, a small neo-classical house modelled on a Neapolitan villa.

Christmas market at Berlin Town Hall near Alexanderplatz has a little bit into historic Berlin with street artists such as organ grinders and musicians, an Old Berlin setting and traditional stalls selling authentic arts and crafts. A 50-metres giant Ferris wheel provides an excellent view of the festively illuminated Berlin city center. Another popular highlight of this market is the 600 square metres ice rink where skaters makes circles around the impressive Neptune Fountain
Christmas market at Palace Charlottenburg is set up in front of the famous Charlottenburg Palace, about 250 vendors display and sell nostalgic Christmas crafts such as nativity figures and tree decorations. Traditional German Christmas sweets like stollen, spritz biscuits and marzipan loaves are available at the market too.
The Lucia Christmas market is named after the Nordic goddess of light. Set up at a former brewery from the 19th century, the market welcomes visitors with traditional Scandinavian handicrafts, food, drinks.
Christmas market at Gendarmenmarkt is location between Französischer Dom and Deutscher Dom where is one of the most atmospheric in the city. The market offers a large range of handmade goods crafted by artisans, Christmas food, and entertainment. Culinary offerings at the Gendarmenmarkt Christmas market range from unusual snacks to gourmet menus and traditional Christmas delicacies. Jugglers, fire-eaters, choirs and classical, jazz or Gospel ensembles provide a varied entertainment program on each market day.
