Charminar, Hyderabad, India in 4k ultra HD
The Charminar (Four Minarets), constructed in 1591, is a monument and mosque located in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. The landmark has become a global icon of Hyderabad, listed among the most recognized structures of India. Charminar has been a historical place with Mosque on the top floor for over 400 years and also known for its surrounding markets. It is one of the tourist attractions in Hyderabad. It is where many local festivals are celebrated, such as Ramzaan.
The Charminar is situated on the east bank of Musi river. To the west lies the Laad Bazaar, and to the southwest lies the richly ornamented granite Makkah Masjid. It is listed as an archaeological and architectural treasure on the official List of Monuments prepared by the Archaeological Survey of India. The English name is a translation and combination of the Urdu words Chār and Minar or meenar, translating to Four Pillars; the eponymous towers are ornate minarets attached and supported by four grand arches.

Charminar
*History*
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the current caretaker of the structure, mentions in its records, There are various theories regarding the purpose for which Charminar was constructed. However, it is widely accepted that Charminar was built at the centre of the city, to commemorate the eradication of cholera, a deadly disease which was wide spread at that time.[7][8] According to Jean de Thévenot, a French traveller of the 17th century whose narration was complemented with the available Persian texts, the Charminar was constructed in the year 1591 CE, to commemorate the beginning of the second Islamic millennium year (1000 AH). The event was celebrated far and wide in the Islamic world, thus Qutb Shah founded the city of Hyderabad to celebrate the event and commemorate it with the construction of this building.[9][10]:17–19Due to its architecture it is also called as Arc de Triomphe of the east.
The Charminar was constructed at the intersection of the historical trade route that connects the markets of Golkonda with the port city of Machilipatnam.[12]:195 The Old City of Hyderabad was designed with Charminar as its centerpiece.[13] The city was spread around the Charminar in four different quadrants and chambers, segregated according to the established settlements. Towards the north of Charminar is the Char Kaman, or four gateways, constructed in the cardinal direction.[9][12][14][15]:170 Additional eminent architects from Persia were also invited to develop the city plan. The structure itself was intended to serve as a Mosque and Madarsa. It is of Indo-Islamic architecture style, incorporating Persian architectural elements.
Historian Masud Hussain Khan says that the construction of Charminar was completed in the year 1592, and that it is the city of Hyderabad which was actually founded in the year 1591.[16]:4 According to the book Days of the Beloved, Qutb shah constructed the Charminar in the year 1589, on the very spot where he first glimpsed his future queen Bhagmati, and after her conversion to Islam, Qutb Shah renamed the city as Hyderabad. Though the story was rejected by the historians and scholars, it became popular folklore among the locals.[17]:3,12
Qutb Shah was also among the early poets of Dakhani Urdu. While laying the foundation of Charminar, he performed the prayers in Dakhini couplets, which are recorded as follows:
Dakhini Urdu
میرا شہر لوگوں سے مامور کر
راكهيو جوتو دريا میں مچھلی جيسے
Translation into Telugu
నదిలో చేపలని ఎలా నింపావో
ఈ నగరాన్ని కూడా అలా నింపు దేవుడా
ranslation into English
Fill this city of mine with people as,
You filled the river with fishes O Lord.
Translation into Hindi
मेरा शहर लोगों के मामूर कर,
राख्यों जो तो दरया में मछली जैसी
The Charminar masjid is a square structure with each side being 20 meters (approximately 66 feet) long. Each of the four sides has one of four grand arches, each facing a fundamental point that opens directly onto the street in front of it. At each corner stands an exquisitely shaped, 56 meter-high (approximately 184 feet) minaret, with a double balcony. Each minaret is crowned by a bulbous dome with dainty, petal-like designs at the base. Unlike the minarets of Taj Mahal, Charminar's four fluted minarets are built into the main structure. There are 149 winding steps to reach the upper floor. The structure is also known for its profusion of stucco decorations and the arrangement of balustrades and balconies.[20]
The structure is made of granite, limestone, mortar, and pulverized marble, weighing approximately 14,000 tones apiece.[21] Initially the monument was so proportionately planned that when the fort first opened, one could see all four corners of the bustling city of Hyderabad through each of its four grand arches, as each arch faced one of the most active royal ancestral streets.
A mosque is located at the western end of the open roof. The remaining section of the roof served as a royal court during the Qutb Shahi times. The actual mosque occupies the top floor of the four-storey structure. A vault which appears from inside like a dome supports two galleries within the Charminar, one over another. Above those is a terrace that serves as a roof that is bordered with a stone balcony. The main gallery has 45 covered prayer spaces with a large open space in front to accommodate more people for Friday prayers.
The clock on the four cardinal directions was added in 1889. There is a vazu (water cistern) in the middle with a small fountain for ablution before offering prayer in the Charminar mosque.
*Makkah Masjid*
The monument overlooks another grand mosque called the Makkah Masjid. Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the 5th ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, commissioned bricks to be made from the soil brought from Mecca, the holiest site of Islam, and used them in the construction of the central arch of the mosque, hence its name.

The famous ‘Choodi Bazar’ that is situated to the west of the Charminar is a paradise of bangle shopping in Hyderabad. This happens to be one of the oldest markets in Hyderabad and is famous for the artificial jewellery sold here. Apart from this, silverware, antique items, silk sarees, khara dupattas (a traditional variety), fabrics, spices, and perfumes are sold here. The truth is there is much more that one can get their hands on at this market.
What makes this place special and that which gives it its name is a particular type of bangle made from lacquer. These lacquer bangles are decorated and embellished with stones and gems to add to its beauty. Dating back to the period when the Nizam’s ruled the land, you will find it a pleasure to shop here. The lace shops are a star attraction as well. A word of caution - you would need to bargain here and trust us, the best deals ensue. Shopping in Hyderabad never got more exquisite.

SWEET & SAVORY Indian STREET FOOD Tour of Charminar | Hyderabad, India
In November of 2018, I embarked upon the most epic trip of my career: a 21-day, 7-city trip to India with my good friend Sam. It was the second time that year that I visited the country. The first was in January, and it changed my life. For months I dreamed of going back and experiencing more of this incredible country, and I finally made it happen! After a whirlwind 36 hours in Pune, we made our way to Hyderabad and went crazy, filming, eating, and experiencing as much as we possibly could!
Subscribe to Sam & Audrey:
Our second day in Hyderabad continued with a visit to the city’s Old Town, which includes the famous monument and mosque known as Charminar, and of course, more local eateries! Come along with us as we explore the Old Town of Hyderabad!
My Film Making Kit ►
Sam and I started off with a stop at Nimrah Café and Bakery, a popular spot that is famous for its tea and biscuits. We watched the bakers make the biscuits in the kitchen, and then tried a massive tray filled with 25 different types, including Osmania, coconut with cherry, and chocolate-cashew. The coconut with cherry was rich and sweet and packed with shredded coconut. The chocolate-cashew was flaky and crumbly and just plain phenomenal, and I also had an awesome sugar sandwich cookie with cream and lemon, and that’s coming from someone who isn’t a big biscuit fan!
Next, we tried Nimrah’s famous Irani Chai, which was milky, frothy, and bursting with amazing flavors including ginger and cinnamon. The biscuits were even better when I dipped them into the chai.
Our next destination was Charminar (which translates to “four minarets,” after the monument’s four ornate towers, which are supported by four grand arches), a monument and mosque that was built in 1591 and is listed as an archaeological and architectural treasure by the Archaeological Survey of India. It cost us 300 rupees, over ten times the rate for locals, to get into Charminar, but after we slowly ascended the narrow, winding staircase and emerged onto a balcony overlooking the city, it was worth it. From there, we had a spectacular view of much of the city, including the gates that served as the entrance to the Old City. The architecture was gorgeous!
After a quick selfie with a fan at Charminar, it was off to Milan Juice Centre for some juices and fruit salad so we could cool down from the 95-degree heat! I had a drink called a Mango Malai, which is a super fatty smoothie made from heated whole milk and yogurt. It was very rich, but also very good and just what I needed to cool off!
Our next stop was Al-Akbar Fast Food Corner, where we tried boneless Chicken 65 and ginger chicken along with some parathas. The chicken 65 was kind of like masala chicken nuggets. It was chewy with a slightly crunchy exterior, and I absolutely loved the masala flavor! The ginger chicken was bursting with ginger flavor, had an orange-ginger sauce on it. It was hot, super tender, and absolutely delicious, and the paratha was out of this world when I dipped it into the spicy orange-ginger sauce!
Our final stop of the afternoon was Matwale Doodh Ghar, where we got some lassi, a creamy, traditional Indian yogurt drink, which was the perfect way to cool down my mouth after that spicy chicken and from the heat outside! On our way there, Sam and I got a complete sensory overload as we strolled down the streets of Old Hyderabad in the shadow of Charminar. There are tons of vendors everywhere, the city is so busy, and there’s always tons of things going on around you.
My lassi was super thick and creamy, almost like a chunky yogurt with a bit of raspberry. It was so refreshing and exactly what I needed after a long afternoon under the hot Indian sun!
