-- About this video --
Today we have a long drive between Westport and Karamea on the West Coast of the South Island. But we have a great reason to split up the journey by doing one of the famous short walks in New Zealand! We are doing the Charming Creek Walkway on the West Coast.
But in true West Coast spirit, the weather is pretty wild. It’s raining like hell but this makes for a more astonishing walk full of New Zealand waterfalls.
The Charming Creek Walkway is about 3 hours one way and follows an old railway line from the mining and timber milling days. We follow the steps of early pioneers that tried to carve their way through this magnificent landscape as we follow the Ngakawau River, a river that is getting more rapid-filled and gushing as the day goes on and the rain persists.
We walk through tunnels, over swing bridges, over rock fall areas and under waterfalls on our awesome adventure hike in New Zealand. There is so much to see here, including the Mangatini Falls which are raging with the heavy rain right now.
Because of the rising water levels and relentless rain, we decide Mangatini Falls is a good turning point to head back along the Charming Creek Track and back to campervan to hit the road to Karamea! Join us tomorrow to see what awesome things to do in Karamea!

-- About this video --
Today we are seeing some of the most amazing natural features of New Zealand and we bet most of you have never heard of it. We are going to the Oparara Basin in the Kahurangi National Park.
Thanks to the lovely guys at the Rongo Backpackers in Karamea, we borrow the “Rogomobile” and drive down the long and narrow gravel road into the Kahurangi National Park. The drive is like a bush walk for cars as we make our way through the forest. We arrive at the parking area for the Oparara Basin and our options are endless!
First up, we hit the Crazy Paving Cave, a cave which looks like it has a natural pavement. We follow a walkway through into the darkness, crouching through tunnels... It’s quite the adventure (like every day is a New Zealand adventure!)
Next is the Box Cave, named because it’s like a giant box, we guess. This is a huge cave that has many little side rooms and rock formations. It’s like exploring the caves of Waitomo but by yourself and free! Yes, this is one of the free caves in New Zealand!
After exploring some New Zealand caves, next we head to the finale, the Oparara Arches. This takes us on a beautiful bush walk through the Kahurangi National Park alongside rivers and streams flowing over mossy rocks. It’s like a fairy tale forest.
We finally reach the grand finale which is the magnificent Oparara Arches – a giant archway with a river flowing through it! We are in awe of this huge arch in New Zealand! It’s one of the New Zealand attractions not to be missed!
We can’t top that so we call it a day and head back to Rongo Backpackers where tonight is potluck night. Everyone in the hostel makes a dish and shares it with the group.
So what do you think of the Oparara Basin? Would you add it to your New Zealand bucket list?

Poblíž této vesnice můžete nalézt Moria Gate z Pána prstenů a také další treky. To a mnohem více naleznete v našem novém videu.

Cape Foulwind Walkway in Westport - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand

-- About this video --
Today we are in the West Coast town of Westport in the South Island! Nearby is the popular New Zealand short walk, the Cape Foulwind Walkway!
We drive just about 10km out of Westport to find the one-way Cape Foulwind Walkway. You can either begin at Tauranga Beach or at the opposite end near the lighthouse. We begin at the Cape Foulwind Lighthouse.
The Cape Foulwind walk takes us through low-lying coastal vegetation toward the Cape Foulwind Lighthouse. Information panels tell us stories of the history and geology of Cape Foulwind. The Cape Foulwind Walk is super well-maintained with tar-sealed and wide walking track making it extremely accessible. We follow the Cape Foulwind track which gives amazing views of the rugged West Coast and its coastal cliffs along the way.
As we reach Tauranga Beach, we see a huge viewing platform for a seal colony. Down on the rocks below we get an awesome view of the Cape Foulwind seals.
As Cape Foulwind is a one-way track, we return the way we came making it about 2-hours long.
So what do you think of Cape Foulwind? Is it a New Zealand short walk you would do?

Britannia Track in the Buller NZ
Britannia Track
Time: 4 hours, return
Distance: 12 km
From a sign post on the highway 16 km north of
Westport (or 3 km north of Waimangaroa), a farm
road runs approximately 1.5 km to the start of the track.
The track climbs through varied forest to the abandoned
Britannia gold mine where a complete five-head quartz
crushing battery stands with most of its ancillary equipment
intact.
So says DOC anyway.
NZ Walks Info says its 4.24km climbing to an elevation of 540m.
It took Kerry and I about 2.5 hours return from the carpark without rushing anywhere. Take a light if you want to explore the mine shaft part way up, heaps of cave weta in it. P.S. don't watch this video if you're actually planning on walking the track as it will spoil the main attraction.

Surviving Cabin Fever in Caravan - Westport, New Zealand
I arrive in Westport on the West Coast of the South island before the rain arrives. Then there are multiple days of wet weather! I do get cabin fever after being stuck inside this small caravan and brave the rain to start exploring the area. I'm based at an NZMCA park with a freedom camping area next door.
I also start having problems with my shower! The hot water is just not staying on for long... one solution is to go to the local pool for a swim and I found this really helped with the cabin fever too.
The weather starts to improve and I manage a walk along Cape Foulwind... an appropriate name, as it was extremely windy! I then make it to Charming Creek walk and yes, it's a charming walk.
