Huahini To Tahaa Tahiti - My Tour Tales
Huahini To Tahaa Tahiti - My Tour Tales
After a rather rough night of high winds and rains and little sleep, we got up motored from the bottom of Huahini to the pass at the top. We stopped at the Super Market to get some more ice and few supplies. Beer! We pulled the Catamaran right up to the dock in the marina. We were sailing for the far side of Tahaa with every intention of snorkeling when we got there.
We raised the sails in the pass and put in a reef in the main and job as the winds were gusting up to 30mph. The seas were very confused and mostly following. It made for a rather unpleasant ride and two of our crew went chumming. No names but it was Bob and Daniel. Bam!
We trolled the entire way in and I guess the chumming helped and both our rigs got huge hits that snapped the lines immediately. I’m guessing sharks or barracuda. The lines were cut clean off. When we finally got into the pass it calmed down and the chum mates felt better. It took over an hour to go 3/4 of the way around Tahaa and then the sky opened up! The rain was so intense that after a while I couldn’t see the front of the boat. I donned some foul weather gear and sort of hovered in the middle of the channel until I could see better.
We made it safely to the anchorage and dropped the hook. In the distance we could hear the drum beats of the locals practicing for the Haeva, pronounced (Hay-vah, I said it horribly wrong in the video) which is the national contest to determine the dancing champions of all of Tahiti. They take it very seriously. From what I could tell, they were practicing at the church. The drums made us sleepy and we hit the hay pretty early. It was a long intense day for sure.

Raiatea Tahiti - My Tour Tales
Raiatea Tahiti - My Tour Tales
(Exploring Raiatea, Scoping Out Our Catamaran, Researching Provisioning)
I helped Kim do quick video for her online business on the beach at the Oviri Lodge. Then I shot a quick video of the grounds of our lodge and our accommodations. It really is a sweet getaway. Even with mosquito nets in place, we never saw one mosquito. I guess it’s the time of year. We had rented a little car the night before when we flew into Raiatea and we ne fed to head to town and visit Frank Cortez, our good friend and one of our crew. We also wanted to check out the grocery stores and see which one would be best for provisioning.
We met Frank about 10:30 and went to the Dream Yacht Charter abase to try and get a glimpse of our Catamaran. The drive during the day was so sweet compared to the white knuckle drive in the rain o had the night before. We got the base but our boat wasn’t there. Then we spotted it on the other side of the little marina, side tied by itself. It was an older Catana 41. I didn’t realize how old it was until we sailed it. More about that in future Tour Tales. You don’t wanna miss it!
We scoped our a few local grocery stores and soon realized we would have to visit all three to get what we needed for the trip. We played around a little in town and had a bunch of fun filling around in the stores. We saw tons of cool fresh fish. One thing Tahiti is not short on is fresh fish! We also found out liquor is insanely expensive!
We had lunch with Frank at Momo’z, the place he was staying that also has a nice little restaurant. Frank had befriended Momo and surprised us with a circle island tour that he had arranged thru Momo and all he wanted was a little gas money. What a guy! A great chef and tour guide all in one! We explored the island and all of its farms and plantations. We saw things most people will never see because we were with a local. Momo knee everyone! He honked and waved at damn near every person we drove by. They all knew him. He took us to a creek that had freshwater eels! These blue eyes eels are famous and most tourist will never see them.
We stopped at the most sacred ground in all of Tahiti. It’s called, the Marae Taputapuatea, and Momo even told us not to step on the rocks. Kim laid on the ground and said she felt the energy of a thousand years flowing through her. There was a film crew there shooting a documentary about the ruins I assumed. They walked all over the rocks and I thought it was very disrespectful. Oh well it’s their souls.
After our tour we were starving so we headed to a little Italian restaurant called La Napoli. We couldn’t decide between pizza or pasta so we order e one of each and split it between the three of us. They were both good but one weird thing they do there is too each dish with a raw egg. I like eggs, don’t get me wrong but raw egg on a pizza? I scraped mine off. Overall the food was good save the egg. It was a great first night in Raiatea.

The Story of Tahiti
Immersed in a world of majestic mountain peaks, turquoise waters and white-sand beaches, visitors to our islands create memories through authentic experiences that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. For centuries, the Tahitian people have referred to this as Mana. Mana is a life force and spirit that surrounds and connects all living things. You can see it. Touch it. Taste it. Feel it. And from the moment you arrive, you will understand why we say our islands are Embraced by Mana.
The Islands of Tahiti are located in the heart of the South Pacific, just eight hours from Los Angeles and on the same side of the International Dateline as North America. In addition to the destination's natural beauty, tranquility, and privacy, The Islands of Tahiti offer an array of diverse experiences combined with rich Tahitian culture.
Come discover the rich stories of our people, our culture and our heritage while experiencing the world-renowned iconic beauty that has lured travelers for centuries. Surrounded by pristine, crystal clear blue waters, the 118 islands and atolls offer natural beauty, authentic island culture and unique French Polynesian style. Each island offers a variety of activities and accommodation experiences from luxurious resorts with overwater bungalows, to family pensions to sailing via private charter or scheduled cruise. From our more well known islands of Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora, to Tetiaroa, Taha'a, Raiatea, Huahine, Tikehau, Rangiroa, Fakarava, to the Marquesas, Gambier and Austral archipelagoes, the country covers more than two million square miles of the South Pacific Ocean.
Sailing French Polynesia
In late May 2017, Diana and I embarked on an epic adventure in the South Pacific with dear friends Bob and Joy, and their three children.
***
I chartered a Moorings 48' sailing Catamaran bareboat (we were the crew), and sailed for 10 glorious days around the Society Islands of French Polynesia.
***
This was a return visit for Diana and me, since we visited this area Dec. 1999. We are happy to report that not much has changed on the islands we saw.

SAILING FRENCH POLYNESIA (3 Weeks in French Polynesia - Pt. 4) (GoPro Video)
Sailing between Bora Bora, Raiatea, and Taha'a in French Polynesia! During our 3-week trip to French Polynesia in 2016, our final week was spent on a catamaran with TradeWinds. We sailed around the bright, blue waters of Bora Bora, saw a whale and dolphin, swam with stingrays, snorkeled the Coral Garden in Taha'a, toured a vanilla farm, visited a pearl farm, watched a traditional Polynesia dance show at Le Ficus, and enjoyed living on a boat for a week!
