Charters Towers Holiday Travel Video Guide, Queensland Australia
Charters Towers flourished during the bustling gold boom of the late 1800s. By the turn of the century it had become Queensland's second largest city, and the honour of having one of the first regional Stock Exchanges built in 1888.

We were proud to be associated with the famous Titley & Co western wear shop in Charters Towers when they chose to film their 2016 TV ad at Leahton Park - home of Texas Longhon Wagon Tours & Safaris. Apart from the great models and clothing it also features our wagon horses - Gus and Woodrow and our 1956 F100 pickup truck.
Charters Towers Street Parade
Held during the 10 Days in the Towers Festival the annual street parade gave a good indication of the health of this confident and friendly Queensland country town. Hundreds of children took part and the atmosphere was really buzzing with many adults going onto the annual country music festival events later that day. There is a solid core of visitors who come each year for the whole 10 days, mostly in the Grey Nomad category, but loads of locals are involved and many musos & their families attend to take part in the country music talent quests over two separate weekends.
Matty Smith - Charters Towers
AJ is in Charters Towers a Queensland's small gold town
The town was founded in the 1870s when gold was discovered by chance at Towers Hill on Christmas Eve 1871 by 12-year-old Aboriginal boy, Jupiter Mosman.
Jupiter was with a small group of prospectors including Hugh Mosman, James Fraser and George Clarke. Their horses bolted after a flash of lightning. While he was searching Jupiter found both the horses and a nugget of gold in a creek at the base of Towers Hill.
Charters originated from the Gold Commissioner, W.S.E.M. Charters. A total of ten major gold reefs were eventually mined.
Such were the boom years, between 1872 and 1899, that Charters Towers hosted its own stock exchange. The Great Northern railway between Charters Towers and the coastal port of Townsville was completed in December 1882. During this period, the population was approximately 30,000, making Charters Towers Queensland's largest city outside of Brisbane. The city was also affectionately known as 'The World as it was said that anything one might desire could be had in the 'Towers', leaving no reason to travel elsewhere.

Australian troops in Hawaii DPR/TV/1536
Australian soldiers training with the United States Army in Hawaii are involved in a wide range of activities. From training in rugged volcanic areas on cold 13,000 feet hilltops to sight-seeing under tropical rain clouds, there's been little of the traditional Hawaiian weather for them in recent weeks. The Australian platoon of 40 Queensland based soldiers is taking part in an exchange programme. A similar group of American soldiers has been training in Queensland. For the Australians, much of the work time has been spent in the Pohakuloa (Pronounce Puck-loo-ah) training camp. The Australians, whose home towns are scattered throughout Australia, have trained on many pieces of equipment previously unfamiliar to them. Typical was a guided missile carrying vehicle used for air defence. Called the Chaprall (Pronounce Shap-er-ell), it fires a heat-seeking projectile, five inches in diameter, and is used in close support of ground operations. Other training has been closer to Australian techniques and American GIs are also learning much through the exchange. Local leave in Hawaiian towns has been a highlight of the Australian tour, now in its fifth week. Despite unpredictable weather, there's been a lot to see. Everywhere they've been, the Australians have found themselves at the top of the popularity polls, creating interest with everything from accents to the widely hailed slouch hat. The Australians belong to the 8th and 9th Battalions of The Royal Australian Regiment, from Enoggera, Brisbane, Qld. Their exchange programme is expected to be the forerunner of similar operations for Australian soldiers with the United States 25th Infantry Division, a top-line combat unit from the Honolulu area. Present training is taking place at the farthest tip of the Hawaiian chain of islands on high altitude plateaus. Later recreation will include visits to the crater rims of live volcanoes and even a chance for snow-skiing at some of the highest tips of neighbouring islands. Also identified: Private First Class Charles Johnson of Louisiana; Lieutenant Ray Losch of Chicago, Illinois; Lance Corporal Neil Hill of East Brisbane, Qld; Private Rick Boyce, 27, of Charters Towers, Qld; Private Boyd Bayard, 21, of Wynnum, Brisbane, Qld.
