BusyBus Peter Rosenfeld watches Liverpool warships commemorate Battle Of The Atlantic
BusyBus Sightseeing Tours are based in the North West of the UK and deliver all sorts of exciting adventures using cool, state-of-the-art minibuses and really jolly driver / guides. In Liverpool on 25th, 26th & 27th May 2013 the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic (BOA 70) will be commemorated with a series of events.
The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous military campaign in World War 2, at its height from mid-1940 through to the end of 1943. The BOA demonstrated the enduring importance of control of the sea to provide a highway for the transport of raw materials, munitions, and men, to maintain the nation's security and to project power across the globe.
The Battle of the Atlantic was pivotal to the success of the allied side in World War 2. After the fall of Europe, the main supply route for the continued prosecution of the war was between north America and the UK across the North Atlantic. Ultimately it was the successful protection of this vital sea corridor by British and allied ships from the German surface and U-boat threat that led to success in North Africa, at D-Day and ultimately resulted in the fall of Germany.

The Sculpture of David Smith (1906-1965), Part 1
David Gariff, senior lecturer, National Gallery of Art.
David Smith (1906–1965) is arguably America’s greatest sculptor of the 20th century. His art enlarged the vocabulary of sculpture by employing welding and industrial processes and materials, laying the groundwork for the directness of minimalism and the realization that sculpture could be anything the artist desired. Smith’s oeuvre is a logical outgrowth of earlier 20th-century sculptural trends in cubism, constructivism, and surrealism. However, his work also represents a new paradigm for the language of modern sculpture that reflects the dynamic growth and industrial prowess of the United States after the Second World War. Smith’s confrontation with the process of creation broke the rules and expanded the possibilities of his art form. In part one of this lecture, presented at the National Gallery of Art on March 7, 2019, senior lecturer David Gariff explores Smith’s revolutionary art through a discussion of some of his most important and innovative works, including the Agricola, Tanktotem, Sentinel, Zig, Voltri, and Cubi series.

Steam Operations near Baroda and Agra, India 1978
This is a short clip from the film, In the Midday Sun, in the Steam2Music archive.
See steam2music.goingfree.net/films/middaysun for further details and the following summary.
The film records human and animal life on Indian railways in early 1978 and 1986. Much of it was filmed during the heat of the day.
The film starts at the small station of Daruta where a Class WG 2-8-2 (built at Chittaranian Locomotive Works) passes through light engine. An express train hauled by an Class XP 4-6-2 (built at Chittaranian Locomotive Works) loco rushes through from Agra to Delhi. The rest of the film then shows different aspects of Indian railways from dawn to dusk.
Early in the morning, filmed mainly in Agra but also in Baroda and Delhi, preparation work takes place on Class CWD 2-8-2 (supplied by the Canadian Locomotive Co, Kingston) and Class WG 2-8-2 at the steam locomotive shed, while laundry workers (Dhobi) begin their work at the riverside and track maintenance gangs stride off to their work carrying their simple equipment. The film shows these locomotives shunting and hauling heavy trains between Tundla and Agra (a single line requiring exchange of tokens between drivers and signalmen), interspersed with shots on the footplate of a Class H 4-6-0 (built in 1922 by North British, Glasgow) shunting in Baroda.
Then the film depicts life on the station at Rishikesh, an important Hindu pilgrimage centre. This is complemented by scenes on a footbridge at Agra Station. It is approaching midday and the pace of life slows down as people seek relief from the heat. However the trains keep moving - shown here, hauled by the above classes of broad gauge steam locomotive, at Agra, Baroda and Ahmedabad. At Ahmedebad we also see metre gauge Class YP 4-6-2 (built at Chittaranian and other workshops) and Class YL 2-6-2 (built by Henschel), where track maintenance work is being carried out on the line to Delhi and where trains are often overloaded. This leads to a chase through Sasangir forest in western Gujarat to glimpse another YL-hauled train.
In late afternoon a Janata Express makes its stop in Agra. The Class XP locomotive is lubricated before departing into the setting sun. Shunting and other daily duties performed by Classes H, WG and YL continue as usual.

We intend to conduct the negotiations in a better way. I think this is the combination: political talks, economic development, regional cooperation, that can bring peace and a final settlement a lot closer and to make it a realistic option.
15. Netanyahu walks away
STORYLINE
Israeli security vans entered Gaza through the Erez crossing on Thursday, loaded with cash for banks in Gaza.
Israel had agreed on Wednesday to allow the delivery to ease a shortage of cash that has crippled the economy of the blockaded Palestinian territory.
Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak authorised the transfer of 100 (m) million shekels (25 (m) million US dollars) to Hamas-controlled Gaza from Palestinian banks in the West Bank, his office said.
The shekel is the territory's main currency, although Gazans also use US dollars and Jordanian dinars.
Israel has not allowed money to enter Gaza since October, causing a cash crisis in local banks.
Israel's refusal to allow Palestinian banks to transfer cash to their Gaza branches is a part of a larger blockade imposed on the territory following an upsurge in violence which began in early November when Israel carried out a deadly attack, killing six Hamas gunmen, which drew Palestinian rocket attacks in response from Gaza.
Last week, on what was meant to be pay day for tens of thousands of civil servants, many Gazans were unable to collect their pay because cash ran out.
Meanwhile in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, Likud party chairman Benjamin Netanyahu met representatives and ambassadors of 26 European states.
Netanyahu told them that a Likud government under his leadership would continue the peace talks, albeit in a different form, and stressed the need for security and economic development as a prelude to peace.

PICKUP (1951) FULL MOVIE Hugo Haas, Beverly Michaels, Alan Nixon
One of Haas' best noir films, this movie has the feel of an old dime paperback.
Pickup (1951): Haas is a station agent for the railroads and bags cheap Beverly Michaels who thinks he's got a fortune stashed away in the desert. Alan Nixon is his young assistant and Michaels races after him for some lust and larceny, plotting on the killing of Haas, discussing it out loud in front of him because he's lost his hearing with the most intense case of tinnitus in the history of the cinema. The movie also has a beatnik hobo buddy called The Professor. This is one of Hugo's best and reminded me a lot of pulpy Jim Thompson novels.

The Emancipation Proclamation and the End of Slavery
Although the Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery in America at the time it was written, it fundamentally changed the character of the Civil War. Overnight, a war to preserve the Union became a war for human liberation. A distinguished panel discusses the Emancipation Proclamation and its symbol of hope for the nearly 4 million enslaved people who were held in bondage. Moderated by David Blight, professor of history at Yale University, panelists include Edna Greene Medford, professor of history at Howard University, and others.

Dumping Day In Yarmouth (c) G. Kent 2012 SOCAN
Lyrics:
There's sparkling on the water
as the boats leave before dawn.
Its Dumping Day down Yarmouth way
yes, the Lobster chase is on.
Hope you fill your hold with Lobster gold
have the greatest catch ever this year.
And if the price is right we'll all sleep tight
filled with lots of Christmas cheer.
All the boats wait in the harbour
just across from Cape Forchu.
Then the DFO she says, Boys go!
and the pack becomes unglued.
All loaded down with traps from town
and the love from me and you.
God bless Dump Day, they're on they're way
let the colour red ring true.
God bless Dump Day, they're on they're way
let the colour red ring true.

We have got 12 dead bodies, ten of them were police officers, two were civilian and we have got 13 wounded people, some of them are police officers and some of them are civilian people.
10. Firefighters cleaning the street with water hose
STORYLINE:
A suicide bomber blew up a guard post outside police headquarters in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar on Tuesday.
According to initial reports from officials, 13 people were killed and 11 wounded in the blast, however Dr Mamoon Khan from Kandahar city's Mirwaise Hospital later told AP Television News they had received 12 dead bodies and 13 wounded people.
We have got 12 dead bodies, ten of them were police officers, two were civilian and we have got 13 wounded people, some of them are police officers and some of them are civilian people, said Khan.
Purported Taliban spokesman Qari Mohammed Yousaf claimed responsibility for the bombing on behalf of the hard-line militia, and threatened more attacks.
Yousaf's claim of responsibility couldn't be independently verified.
He has claimed previous attacks on behalf of the Taliban, but his exact ties to the militia's leadership are unclear.
The attack is the latest in a string of bombings in Kandahar, a former Taliban stronghold.
The violence has raised fears for the country's nascent democracy four years after the Taliban were ousted for hosting Osama bin Laden.
The guard post was destroyed, and several cars and motorbikes were wrecked.
The blast went off against the outer wall of the heavily guarded headquarters, but did not penetrate it or the buildings inside.
Afghan and Canadian troops cordoned off the bomb site, which was stained with blood and strewn with police caps, shoes and shredded clothes.
Some police were weeping.
An Associated Press reporter saw three bodies lying on the ground covered in blood and several wounded people being carried away.
Amid the chaos, civilians were struggling to find out about friends and family who'd been inside the headquarters.
Militants have stepped up attacks in the past year, during which more than 1,600 have died.
There have been more than 20 suicide attacks across Afghanistan in the past four months, suggesting militants may be copying methods used by insurgents in Iraq.
Also in the Kandahar province, a time bomb planted on a bicycle a few hundred metres from a checkpoint at Waish on the Pakistan border injured one passer-by and damaged a truck, the district police chief, Abdul Wasai, said.
