2009 Harvest at Chateau Fonplegade in Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux
On October 1, 2009, harvest continues at Chateau Fonplegade in Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France.
Château Fonplégade, Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé, is a 44-acre property. It is located on the south-side of the famous plateau of Saint Emilion, near the Châteaux Ausone, Bel Air, Canon and Magdelaine. Looking at the Roman pathways still visible today, Fonplégade could be one of the oldest vineyards of Saint-Emilion.
Fonplégade means full fountain or bent fountain. The meaning comes from its clay soil, which supports the formation of springs on the upper side of the property.
At first, the property was divided into several plots owned by several landlords.
In 1852, Jean-Pierre Beylot purchased the property and built the actual mansion house and its surroundings buildings. A few purchases, inheritances and years later, the property became the way it is now: 44 acres all in one block.
In 1863, Château Fonplégade was sold to the Duke of Morny, step brother of Napoleon the 3rd, and to his sister the Countess of Galard.
It was successively taken over by a bank, then by Armand Moueix in 1953 until Denise and Stephen Adams bought it in 2004.
Our main goal now is to be part of the best in Saint-Emilion. Our plan since 2004 has been simple but ambitious: to renovate the vineyards and to go back to friendlier methods towards the environment and the vineyard itself. The year 2009 is the start of the biodynamic production at Fonplegade.

Dark Plum, Full-Bodied, Freshness
Red wine with a very youthful appearance here, completely opaque colour. Pure nose, indicating a quite high ripeness, with plenty of dark fruit. Still in a very youthful phase so it’s not revealing so much, but notes of dark plum, blackberry. Not so much oak; there’s a hint in the background, but it’s really the fruit dominating here. Quite massive in terms of structure, very dense, rich and full-bodied; however I think the extract is rather soft, it’s really combining that high density of ripe dark fruit with a good level of freshness, so I think it’s pretty drinkable in terms of its texture right now, no hard angles despite being youthful. However, I think this is a wine that will gain more aromatic complexity and nuance from further aging. I’d say it’s a very potent wine that should deserve another few years to open up, but well-made, good combination between that concentration and freshness.

Château Fonplegade - 2014 - Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé tasted 100% blind by the Best Sommelier of the World, Andreas Larsson.
Dark ruby with a purple hue. Fragrant and floral nose of violet, cassis, dark berries and discreet oak. Rather concentrated palate but with a vital freshness, young but ripe tannin and elegant floral fruit, finely integrated wood, juicy and digest with a steady long aftertaste. Still young but highly potent.

Wild Berry, Spice Box, Complex and Layered
Red wine with a quite developed colour here. It still has a quite dense ruby-red centre, but towards the rim it is rather tawny. Starting to fading a little bit, so it indicates a certain age. Really fine nose here it is certainly indicating maturity here, and I would first of all say complex. It is actually blending a lot of different things together here. I pick up some damp tobacco, cedar wood, almost like cigar box, with some leather, some earthy notes, smoke, truffle. There is also quite vigorous fruit. Still have a lot of wild berry notes in there. We still have a good density on the palate. Finely distributed tannin. So plenty of extract, but a good maturity here. A lot of those wild berry notes, with those fine spices; spice box, with tobacco and wood. So quite sophisticated I would say at this stage. It should probably reach twelve, fifteen years somewhere in that direction. So complex and layered, with a very long finish. I think the strength here is really that it starts out here quite powerful with copious amount of fruit, but it truly has a very long finish with nuance and spiciness. So a mature and sophisticated wine to enjoy today.

Chateau Grand Renouil Presentation
Chateau Grand Renouil is the main estate of the Ponty Winery. It was bought by the Ponty Family in 1938. A beautiful but tiny vineyard in the Canon Fronsac AOC in Bordeaux, it only produces 9000 bottles every year. Its wines are very complex and concentrated and can be aged in your cellar for many years.

Adams French Vineyards
In 1993, billionaire Stephen Adams and his wife Denise were married at a country chapel in St.-Emilion, Bordeauxs historic Right Bank city. This was the beginning of Adams fascination with French culture and wine, a fascination that would cause him to purchase six (and counting) Châteaux in and around St. Emilion. His considerably diverse holdings, amassed over the course of 47 years, include banks, billboards, recreational vehicles, and now wineries and in France, no less. Known collectively as Adams French Vineyards, this gives a whole new meaning to the phrase an American in Paris.
Beginning in 2000, Stephen Adams bought Château Lagarosse, in the rolling hills of the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux. He followed this in 2002 with the purchase of Château de Candale in St.-Emilion. Still looking for a flagship winery, he found it in 2004 with the purchase of Château Fonplégade, a 48-acre property located on St.-Emilions limestone plateau, yet needing some TLC. His total renovation of the property, at a cost of $7 million, including large new fermentation tanks, and vineyard improvements.
In 2005, he bought Château de Bel-Air in Lalande-de-Pomerol. And, last year, he added Château Roylland in St.-Emilion and Château LEnclos in Pomerol. All along, his strategy always was (and still is) to pay relatively low prices for properties, then upgrade heavily - all under the direction of Michel Rolland.
Join us as we talk with Stephen Adams at Château Fonplegade in St. Emilion, and tour vineyards and wineries of this and several other of Adams properties, including Château De Bel Air, Château de Candale, and Château Lagarosse.
