Château Gruaud Larose 1982 #023
VIDEO 023. CHÂTEAU GRUAUD LAROSE 1982
The Château Gruaud-Larose is one of the most famous wineries in France, located in the Bordeaux wine region. The winery, whose wines bear the title “Deuxieme Grand Cru Classé”, is located west of the wine-growing village of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle and one of the most prestigious companies in the country. The Château Gruaud-Larose, whose wines, landscape and architecture are equally convincing, is one of the top wineries in France. Surrounded the well-maintained property is not only white gravel paths that make their way through a well-kept English garden, but also of fragrant flowers that give expression to the property. In the midst of this dreamlike complex stands a two-storied manor house, which is equipped with several wings.
The era of the winery began in 1757, when the former pastor Gruaud acquired three neighboring vineyards, which he managed from then on. Later, Sébastien Larose, nephew of the priest, joined the company. From then on, the winery was called Château Gruaud-Larose. After the pastor’s death, the winery was split into two separate units known as Gruaud-Larose-Sarget and Gruaud-Larose-Faure. In 1934, Désiré Cordier bought the two wineries, which from then on were regarded as the figurehead of the wine trade group Cordier, which was also based in Bordeaux. Due to economic problems, the winery was sold a few years later to the wine trade group Taillan, whose winemaker Georges Pauli continued the estate with great success.
Today, the winery, on whose vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are cultivated, measures 82 hectares. Although some vines are almost half a century old, the average age of the plants is 40 years. The red wines of the manufacturer are not only refined and distinctive in taste, but also extremely natural, because chemical pesticides, flavorings and flavor enhancers are basically not used. Instead, organic fertilizers and treated water are used here, so that the wines are characterized by a purity that can be seen, smelled and tasted. After a careful harvest, the fruits are processed in a timely manner, before the valuable grape juice is matured in traditional oak barrels. There are 1,300 barriques in the cellar, where the red wine is stored for 18 months. (July 7. 2011)
