Chateau Pichon Baron's Wines - Bordeaux - Millesima
Millésima presents Pichon Baron:
Pichon Longueville (Baron), 2nd Cru Classe in 1855, is one of the great aristocratic wines of the Medoc. Formerly a single entity which was split up into two parts in 1830 to create the distinct Pichon Longueville and Pichon Comtesse labels, the Chateau Pichon Baron very soon carved out an excellent reputation as a Grand Cru. With its subtle combination of the human factor (the charisma of its successive owners and the expertise of those working the vines), the micro-climate and the exceptional soil of the vineyard (structured around beautiful gravel and clay ridges over 40 hectares), Pichon Baron excels in Pauillac style and in the development of its great Cabernet wines in particular.
Its Pichon Longueville and Les Tourelles de Longueville wines are indisputable evidence of the intrinsic qualities expected by serious amateurs of Pauillac wines.

Tasting One of Bordeaux's Best: Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron 2005
Pauillac, with its gravelly and well drained soils on the left bank of Bordeaux, produces some of the most prodigious and powerful reds in the region. It's quite typical, in fact, that these wines require a good decade just to begin their lengthy evolution process so patience is needed here. Second growth Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron fits into this mold with a classic left bank blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon along with some Merlot and dollop of Cabernet Franc.
We visited with tasting coordinator Nicolas Santier tasting the '05, '08, '09, '10 & '11. In this video, Nicolas guided through a tasting of the 2005, one of those superb vintages that blessed the Bordeaux region with ideal weather. As Nicolas says, it was one of those vintages where you could allow nature to do its best and not interfere. We both agreed that the wine is just beginning to open but could easily use another few years to begin to more fully round out. This will be a classic in the years ahead.

Tasting Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron 2009
Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron, 2009 Pauillac, Bordeaux
WI Score 97, Release Price $95, 2014 Price $200-260
2009 was such a superb vintage, all around, one that lifted all boats or in this case, vineyards. But when you're already one the top sites, such as Pichon Longueville Baron, a vintage such as this brings you tantalizingly close to perfection!
As you'll hear in our discussion with tasting coordinator Nicolas Santier, this wine is so prodigious that its richness and power simply burst from the glass, seducing the nose with blackberry, mocha, charcoal, smoke and flowers. Yet despite its concentration, it delivers such wonderful acidity. With such balance, I'm convinced it will age for at least the next few decades, making it a top candidate for your cellar. It's a wine that may merit a perfect score, at some point in the future.
