Dark Plum, Bitter Chocolate, Black Truffle
Colour intensity is quite deep, still impenetrable at the core, but it is starting to shed some of that colour towards the rim. More in the direction of ruby-red. Quite delicious nose here. Inviting with very sweet fruity character. Almost with a hint of confiture, combining red berry fruits, such as raspberry with some darker aromas of plum and cassis. There is an elegant toastiness in the background, so fine oak and fine spiciness as well. Some floral hints and also a touch of earth, like black truffle, that I love. Good grip on the palate. It is fairly high concentration. There is a high degree of ripeness here, so really quite opulent fruit. It suggests sweetness, but still it keeps classically dry on the palate, without over ripeness. I love that hint of fine confiture, framboise, dark plum and cassis. Tannins, there are quite a lot of them, but very finely integrated right now. Some notes of bitter chocolate on the palate, with roasted coffee beans. Quite approachable already, quite delicious. I think this one is approaching a first level of maturity. I could easily enjoy this today. Long finish. A fine persistence. Already starting to show its best sides. It should obviously develop a lot more complexity over the coming years. So a fine wine indeed.

Owned by the Ballande group since 1999, Château Prieuré-Lichine was originally a priory: Cantenac Priory, founded by monks in the 12th century. Early on, it was dedicated to the production of wines whose reputation had spread far and wide even at that time. The Château only became a winery in its own right after the French Revolution. Prieuré-Lichine was recognised in the imperial classification of 1855, where it was ranked fourth cru. For many years, the wine's reputation was carried by a charismatic owner named Alexis Lichine. He was nicknamed The Pope of wine on account of his personality, his energy, his passion for wine and his innovative spirit. He acquired the vineyard in 1951 and gave it its current name. More than 50 years later -- the winery having reached new heights in the quality of its soil and reaping the benefits of modern infrastructures -- it is now the Ballande family's turn to indulge their passion for the estate and to oversee the future of this grand Margaux, whose existence is orchestrated by Justin Onclin and his team.
Working 70 hectares of vines, essentially made up of fine gravel and clay, the team produces fine, elegant, delightful wines that are powerful without being overpowering -- in keeping with the characteristics of the appellation. The winery has voluntarily chosen a policy of stringent parcel selection, and is thus able to guarantee consumers wines with strong character that may be enjoyed young or after several decades, aged in the bottle.

Millésima présente château Prieuré-Licihine:
Propriété du groupe Ballande, le château Prieuré-Lichine fut à l'origine le prieuré de Cantenac fondé par des moines au XIIe siècle. Très tôt consacré à l'élaboration de vins déjà réputés à cette époque, le château ne devint un cru à part entière qu'après la Révolution Française. Reconnu par le classement impérial de 1855, lequel le classera quatrième cru. Prieuré-Lichine allait pour très longtemps être un nom dont le rayonnement fut assuré par un charismatique propriétaire, Alexis Lichine. Ce dernier, surnommé le Pape du vin par sa personnalité, son dynamisme, sa passion du vn et son esprit innovant, en fera l'acquisition en 1951 et lui donnera son nom actuel. Plus de 50 ans après - le cru ayant été porté haut dans la qualité du terroir et jouissant d'infrastructures modernes - c'est au tour de la famille Ballande de se passionner pour la propriété et de présider aux destinées de ce grand Margaux dont l'existence est orchestrée par Justin Onclin et toute son équipe.
Sur les 70 hectares de vignes essentiellement constituées de graves fines et d'argile, l'équipe y élabore des vins fins, élégants, charmeurs, puissants sans être écrasants, typicité de l'appellation oblige. Le cru, volontairement orienté dans une politique de sélections parcellaires drastiques, peut ainsi garantir aux consommateurs des vins à forte personnalité appréciables jeunes comme bien des décennies plus tard en bouteille.

1- The 1855 classification wasn’t the first one to classify or rank the wines of Bordeaux.
Thomas Jefferson (third president of the USA, 1801–1809) during a visit to the Bordeaux region in 1787 before he was elected, came up with his own list of the best claret wines at the time.
2- The creation of the 1855 Classification – Why and how?
Essentially, Napoleon III, emperor and ruler of France at the time, wanted to showcase the best wines from Bordeaux at the Exposition Universelle de Paris of 1855, or Universal Exhibition, the event we now know as the World’s Fair
So, he asked the Chamber of Commerce of the Bordeaux region, who in turn asked the negociants (la place de Bordeaux, a circle of brokers trading the wines from top Bordeaux wineries), or the
3- The levels: by price
The final rankings for the 1855 Bordeaux Classification are organized mainly by price of the wines during the 19th century.
61 Chateaus were classified:
5 Premiers Crus (First Growth)
14 Deuxièmes Crus (Second Growth)
14 Troisièmes Crus (Third Growth)
10 Quatrièmes Crus (Fourth Growth)
18 Cinquièmes Crus (Fifth Growth)
4- The changes since:
1856. Chateau Cantemerle was included as a Fifth Growth simply because somehow the trade had omitted (or forgotten!?) to include it in the original version.
The second change was about a Third Growth estate of Margaux, Chateau Dubignon, which was merged with Chateau Malescot St. Exupery in the 1870’s.
Then of course the most striking change took place in 1973, when Chateau Mouton-Rothschild was elevated to the coveted rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé, the highest ranking level.
