As far as French history goes, the world heritage-listed town of Saint-Emilion literally steals the show.
We traveled here with Scenic as part of a 2 week French River cruising experience.
One of the beautiful things about traveling through France is its history and take Saint-Emilion for example its origins date back 35,000 years, which is fairly hard to fathom.
But its history like that the makes exploring this place such an experience.
The town sits in one of the main wine producing regions of Bordeaux, her streets are lined with Romanesque churches and prehistoric ruins; It really does feel like you've stepped back into the Middle Ages.
The monolithic church which was carved right into the rock face is the area's most well-known monument and its underground passageways were filled with all kinds of secrets.
So this cave is essentially the heart of Saint-Emilion as we get to see it today; See a young monk by the name of Emilion came down here to live and escape persecution and this is where he would meditate and just over here is his rocky bed where he would spend each night. What a crazy existence.
Exploring what's left of this ancient house of God let’s your imagination run wild.
From the dramatic ruins of Saint-Emilion Scenic take us to the quaint little town of Bergerac.
It's a beautiful snapshot into the 15th century, with the town sitting on the banks of the Dordogne River; trade ruled this area and its traditional food is still one of the major attractions, as long as you’re a fan of duck.
As our journey takes us through the beautiful region of Bordeaux, our chariot is the mighty Scenic Diamond.
This is definitely they way to check out Europe.
On board it's all about luxury and making sure your time here is as relaxing as possible. With all the trimmings of a five star hotel and everything included in the price, yep even the bar; this is your chance to live it up like royalty.
As wine is such a huge part of life in Bordeaux, it'll be a crime not to indulge.
The history dates back over 2,000 years.
Scenic give you every opportunity to experience the culture surrounding some of the best wines in the world.
With all these Australian’s around I hope there is plenty of wine in the cellars.
Cheers everyone!
Hope you’re all enjoying yourselves.
With Chateau Soutard as the backdrop, it's a perfect end to another beautiful day in France.
CHATEAU GODEAU SAINT EMILION GRAND CRU
Chateau Fleur Cardinale - 2012 - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé
Chateau Fleur Cardinale - 2012 - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé tasted by the Best Sommelier in the World Andreas Larsson.
New Wood, Vital Acidity, Dark Fruit
Very dense colour; inky black centre, coloured legs. Youthful intense nose, showing off some meaty notes, leather, plenty of dark fruit, vanilla, some new oak. The palate has a high concentration, plenty of extract. Tannins are still youthful but they’re rather ripe and will easily integrate in the wine over the coming years. Plenty of stuff going on here; new wood, vanilla, leather. Very dense palate, and despite that ripeness and richness it’s marked by a quite vital acidity, it’s fresh all along. Fairly well-integrated oak as well. It’s just the tannins that feel a bit present now, but once again it’s quality tannins that add freshness and length. Very long finish, good persistence. Very good material for further aging.

Dark Plum, Full-Bodied, Freshness
Red wine with a very youthful appearance here, completely opaque colour. Pure nose, indicating a quite high ripeness, with plenty of dark fruit. Still in a very youthful phase so it’s not revealing so much, but notes of dark plum, blackberry. Not so much oak; there’s a hint in the background, but it’s really the fruit dominating here. Quite massive in terms of structure, very dense, rich and full-bodied; however I think the extract is rather soft, it’s really combining that high density of ripe dark fruit with a good level of freshness, so I think it’s pretty drinkable in terms of its texture right now, no hard angles despite being youthful. However, I think this is a wine that will gain more aromatic complexity and nuance from further aging. I’d say it’s a very potent wine that should deserve another few years to open up, but well-made, good combination between that concentration and freshness.

Dark Plum, Tobacco Leaf, Classic Style
Red wine with a quite deep ruby-red core, but starting to lose some colour towards the rim. Pure nose. Medium high intensity. Rather a fruity expression, not a lot of oak. A gentle hint of vanilla in the background. Quite a mix of particularly dark plum, with some other red berry notes. There is a slight hint of something leafy, like tobacco leaf. Palate is quite a classic style, with medium weight. Quite high level of tannin. I would say just about starting to integrate right now. Still feel them, but they are not aggressive in any way. I think another one to two years will round them off a little bit more. Well, balanced acidity. Leaves a quite fresh impression on the palate. I pick up a little bit more oak on the palate than I did on the nose. Nice medium weight. A classic style. I think it wins more on the finish, it has good length, persistent. On the finish, the fruit gets slightly darker, slightly charier and rounder. So definitely a wine I would like to give a slight aeration before drinking it and it should turn out really well.

Dark Fruit, Hint of Vanilla, Plum
Red wine with an almost black core here, very youthful appearance with a blue-purple nuance. Still quite young on the nose –very young on the nose I would say. We have a plethora of dark fruits, blackberry and cassis, with some roasted oak and sweet spices. Palate has a quite rich structure here, with dense dark fruit, youthful extract. Good freshness. We have some underlying oak here, with hints of vanilla. Attractive dark fruit here, with plum and blackberry notes. Warm, ripe, without any notion of alcohol on the palate though. Long and lingering finish. A pretty accessible wine today I would say, in a modern rounded style; however it would certainly gain complexity and nuance from further aging. A nice result.

In the glass, it has a garnet, ruby color. On the nose, it's Earthy, a black/red fruit medley wine typical of the St. Emilion Region. You get notes of earth, tobacco, and savory black olive. On the palate, it's earthiness, but with superfine tannins and nice acidity. A nice balance of savory and black fruit.
