Connected to my beautiful city Bordeaux by a pleasant 30-minute train ride, Saint-Émilion is one of the region's principal red wine areas. On a sunny day like our Saturday there, its unending vineyards look absolutely amazing. Grapes in some of these vineyards were not yet harvested, so we had a chance to try some - yum!
Not only beautiful on the upper ground, Saint-Émilion hides an impressive underground network connecting châteaux (winemaking places) across the region. We visited the underground Monolithic Church, dated back in the 12th century. Unfortunately, photos were prohibited so that you can go discover it yourseld! (really, you should).
We also took a tour inside Château Villemaurine to see how wine is made, learn about Bordeaux's history of winemaking, and taste some of the best red wine in the world afterwards!
And as always, shout out to the people who made this trip memorable :D

Plum, Wild Berry, Delicate Style
Red wine with a medium towards deep ruby-red colour. Still youthful on the nose, fresh with a good emphasis on fruit here, combining red and dark fruits with some gently spicy notes, a hint of licorice, a discreet touch of wood. Palate has a medium weight, still with a youthful freshness and a youthful appearance. The tannins are rather integrated already. We have quite high acidity, giving a lift to that rather red fruity character, with plum and wild berry notes. Just a gentle hint of wood here. Obviously it feels like a slightly lighter example from a lighter vintage, but it’s well-balanced in this quite delicate style, offering a quite good drinkability already. Well-balanced and lighter-bodied, but still has a good length with that juicy red fruit on the finish.

Cap Sud Ouest: Saint Emilion, un mystère de pierre
Chaque année, 1 million de personnes visitent Saint Emilion et sa juridiction, classées depuis 1999 au patrimoine mondial de l’humanité par l’Unesco. Et pourtant, la cité médiévale conserve des histoires et des endroits connus des seuls initiés. C’est un Saint Emilion insolite, inattendue, souvent souterrain que nous allons explorer, avec des promesses de surprises…
Nous commençons la découverte de la cité et de ses origines avec Frédéric Boutoulle, Professeur d'Histoire médiévale à l'université Bordeaux-Montaigne / UMR Ausonius et Coordonateur du Programme Collectif de Recherches Saint-Emilion et sa juridiction. Formes, genèses et architectures d'un territoire. Direction les catacombes, à la découverte d’étonnants monuments souterrains. L’occasion de faire le point sur les plus récentes découvertes sur l’histoire de la ville avec à la clef quelques révélations. Détour par le Château Ausone qui cache dans ses sous-sols une méconnue et splendide peinture rupestre du moyen âge. Au Château Villemaurine, nous partons en expédition avec Eric le Collen dans un labyrinthe obscure, les immenses carrières de calcaire exploitées durant des siècles. On en trouve un peu partout, y compris intra muros. Exemple au Château Gadet où Guy Pétrus Lignac nous ouvre les portes de son coffre fort de pierre.
Nous quittons la cité pour vagabonder dans les vignes. Au Château Cheval Blanc, nous découvrons en compagnie de Pierre Lurton les chais révolutionnaires conçus par Christian de Portzamparc. Un acte architectural radical, plein de modernité. Nous finissons nos escapades dans le monument le plus exceptionnel de Saint Emilion, l’immense église monolithe. In the glass, the wine has a rich, ruby hue. On the nose it has a meaty cedar note, with dried red cherries, sandalwood, a hint of mint or sage. Very expressive with a hint of minerality. On the palate, it delivers with a lot of concentration, but remains elegant. Dried red cherry, cedar, cigar box, tobacco, earth explode on the palate. Full in body and high in tannins. The acidity is moderate to plus. This wine will pair well with braised or grilled meats, or roast pheasant.

Cassis, Dark Plum, Sage
Medium intense, ruby-red colour, still with a hint of purple-blue. Fine nose, starts out quite discreetly but I think it has a very nice oakiness. I mean nicely integrated I would say. There are just some fine hints of roasted coffee bean with vanilla. More of a fruity expression with wild berry fruit, dark plum, mild spices with pepper and vanilla. Still appearing quite fresh with a notion of minerality. Opening up slowly. Good bite on the palate. Quite concentrated there with plenty of weight. It is still youthful with a lot of extract. In terms of tannin, I think they are already nicely rounded. About to integrate now and in the coming year. Quite delicious fruit there. Fairly high ripeness, with elegant, rather on the dark fruity side, with cassis. Aromatic herbs as well, but ripe herbs like a hint of sage, mint, dark plum. The oak feels integrated on the palate as well. It does have a very long finish. It keeps lingering with that fresh mineralic bite on the finish. Elegant fruit. Fine potential here.
