LUXEMBOURG: Clervaux town
Clervaux is a small town, set in the narrow valley of the river Klierf and surrounded by wood covered hills.
The Family of Man, a famous exhibit of photos collected by Edward Steichen, is on permanent display at the Castle of Clervaux. The castle was built in the 12th century.
The Clervaux castle now houses the offices of the local government, the reception of the Syndicat d'Initiative (local Tourist Office), a collection of models of Luxembourg's old fortified castles, and a small war museum exhibiting weapons and souvenirs from the 1944-1945 Ardennes offensive (Battle of the Bulge).
Several walking trails have origin and end in or near Clervaux.

Een bezoek aan het prachtige plaatsje Clervaux in Luxemburg. Het kleine plaatsje ligt in een prachtig dal ingesloten en is vanaf een uitzichtpunt op de doorgaande weg te bekijken. Het heeft 4600 inwoners. Het Kasteel van Clervaux is gedateerd in de 12e eeuw en de 17e eeuw. In het kasteel is een klein oorlogsmuseum gevestigd. Ook is hier de permanente fototentoonstelling The Family of Man, van Edward Steichen. Deze tentoonstelling is reeds in 1955 geopend in het Museum of Modern Art in New York en is sinds 1964 in Clervaux te zien. Sinds 2003 staat hij op de Memory of the world lijst van UNESCO. Het plaatsje heeft zwaar te lijden gehad in de tweede wereldoorlog. Het kasteel is daarna dan ook weer herbouwd. De kerk is van ongeveer 1910.

We tried our best to leave Clervaux but, of course, I was looking around and missed a turn. We heard an awful crunching sound from the rear wheel and tried to figure out what it was, thus the looking down at the bike on the bridge in town. How sublime are the road surfaces in Luxembourg?

O majestoso castelo está situado nas encostas de um promontório rochoso, o chamado Lay. As origens do castelo são perdidos nas brumas do tempo. Alguns historiadores acreditam que ele foi subindo em uma antiga fortificação romana, enquanto outros acreditam que foi construído sobre as fundações celtas.
A ala oeste é a parte mais antiga do castelo, foi construído no século 12 por iniciativa de Gerhard von Sponheim Conde, um irmão do Conde de Vianden. No início do século 15, sob o reinado do poderoso Casa de Brandemburgo, Castelo Clervaux foi muito prolongado. Para proteger o flanco sul do castelo, Frederic I construiu a torre Burgundy maciça que também abrigou o castelo prisão.

Luxemburg - Clerf - Clervaux, Stadt in den Luxemburger Ardennen
Clervaux ist ein malerisches Städtchen mit historischer Vergangenheit im tiefeingeschnittenen Tal der Clerve und im Zentrum der Ardennen. Die Stadt wird überragt von der Benediktinerabtei St. Mauritius und St. Maurus, 1910 in romanisch-burgundischem Stil erbaut. Verschiedene historische Monumente. In nächster Umgebung einige Kirchen (Munshausen, Hachiville, usw.), deren Architektur, Mobiliar und Fresken hochinteressant sind.
In der Stadt der Bilder ist der traditionelle Garten zu einer Ausstellungsfläche unter freiem Himmel umgewandelt und erweitert worden. Mehrere dieser frei zugänglichen Gärten laden zu einem Treffen mit der zeitgenössischen Fotografie ein, zur Betrachtung und zum Austausch.
Das mittelalterliche Schloß (12. Jh) beherbergt mehrere Ausstellungen.

The Family of Man est une exposition photographique légendaire, conçue par Edward Steichen pour le Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) de New York en 1955. 503 images de 273 auteurs originaires de 68 pays composent une mosaïque de l'existence humaine.
Installée en permanence au Château de Clervaux, l'exposition fait partie de la Mémoire du Monde de l'UNESCO.
