D'Albertis in Papua New Guinea 2/2 - O'Hanlon Heroes (S2)
O'Hanlon travels after the Italian explorer Luigi D'Albertis (part 2).
D'Albertis came back from Papua New Guinea with the severed head of a cannibal shot along the way. In his book What I did and What I saw is a picture of the head. O'Hanlon goes in New Guinea to find the tribe that the dead man belonged to.
O'Hanlon travels through the heart of the country of the former headhunters of Papua New Guinea, where d'Albertis with loads of fireworks and dynamite terrified the warriors. They had never seen a rifle before. O'Hanlon manages to find the tribe where from generation to generation the story of d'Albertis' arrival to the village is told. It was the great-grandfather of the chief who was killed by a bullet from the rifle of one of d'Albertis' men. Tradition tells how they found the body without a head the next day. The photo from d'Albertis' book brings the village in turmoil. O'Hanlon decides to track the severed head down back in Italy. After an intensive search he is rewarded.
O'Hanlon's Heroes is a series of documentaries in which the British writer Redmond O'Hanlon follows in the footsteps of his heroes: naturalists, explorers and adventurers from the 19th century.
