It is the only royal and imperial château to have been continuously inhabited for seven centuries and every French royal family added its own architectural style and features when in residence.
Fontainebleau was once one of the residences of the sovereigns. It was home to almost 30 kings of France through eight centuries between Louis IX and Napoleon III. Starting as a 12th century château, Fontainebleau saw many additions and renovations over the centuries. However, it was during the Renaissance that the palace underwent its most spectacular transformation. Francois I (1494 - 1547) brought together extremely diverse collections of art work and made Fontainebleau an artistic centre attracting people from all across Europe. It is world-renowned for its extraordinary Italian Renaissance art and architecture.

The Palace of Fontainebleau, located 55 kilometres from the centre of Paris, is one of the largest French royal châteaux. The palace as it is today is the work of many French monarchs, building on an early 16th-century structure of Francis I. The building is arranged around a series of courtyards.
The palace introduced to France the Italian Mannerist style in interior decoration and in gardens, and transformed them in the translation. The French Mannerist style of interior decoration of the 16th century is known as the Fontainebleau style: it combined sculpture, metalwork, painting, stucco and woodwork, and outdoors introduced the patterned garden parterre. The Fontainebleau style combined allegorical paintings in moulded plasterwork where the framing was treated as if it were leather or paper, slashed and rolled into scrolls and combined with arabesques and grotesques. Fontainebleau ideals of female beauty are Mannerist: a small neat head on a long neck, exaggeratedly long torso and limbs, small high breasts—almost a return to Late Gothic beauties. The new works at Fontainebleau were recorded in refined and detailed engravings that circulated among connoisseurs and artists. Through the engravings by the School of Fontainebleau this new style was transmitted to other northern European centres, Antwerp especially, and Germany, and eventually London.
The château is now home to the Écoles d'Art Américaines, a school of art, architecture, and music for students from the United States. The school was founded by General Pershing when his men were stationed there during the First World War.

Travel Log: Chateau de Fontainebleau is one of the most beautiful castles in France, situated roughly 30 km south of Paris.
Its interior decorations are especially interesting as a fine example of the French Renaissance style. At the same time, its historical significance is hard to overestimate, since it was the preferred residence of French kings and emperors for 7 centuries.
Somewhat neglected during the French Revolution, the Fontainebleau castle is back to its glory under the reign of Napoleon I, who lived there for a long time and bade his farewell to his troops in the court of the castle in 1814. The visitor can see the Emperor's Throne room (unique in France) and his private appartments. Pope Pie VII visited Fontainebleau twice, first as a guest and then as a prisoner of Napoleon;
Napoleon spent the last days of his reign at Fontainebleau, before abdicating there on 4 April 1814, under pressure from his marechals, Ney, Berthier, and Lefebvre. On 20 April, after failing in attempt to commit suicide, he gave an emotional farewell to the soldiers of the Old Guard, assembled in the Court of Honor - the main grand stairway entrance.
One can visit the table where Napoleon signed his abdication of his monarchy on 4 April 1814, before his exile to Elba.
In his memoires, written while in exile on Saint Helena, he recalled his time at Fontainbleau; “…the true residence of Kings, the house of the centuries. Perhaps it was not a rigorously architectural palace, but it was certainly a place of residence well thought out and perfectly suitable. It was certainly the most comfortable and happily situated palace in Europe.”
The Chinese Museum, on the ground floor of the Gros Pavillon close to the pond, was among the last rooms decorated within the Chateau while it was still an imperial residence. Objects used in 1867 by Empress Eugenie contain those taken during the destruction and looting of the Old Summer Palace near Beijng by a joint British-French military expedition to China in 1860.
After a visit to the main building, one can take a stroll in the park and the gardens around the castle; one will see Diane's fountain and (if you are lucky) meet some large swans who live there.

How do you get there?
If you want to get to Fontainebleau from Paris by public transport, take a Transilien train from Gare de Lyon heading towards Migennes, Montargis or Montereau. You want to get off at Fontainebleau-Avon (normally the first, second or third stop), and the journey should take around 40 minutes. Trains run between every 20 and 90 minutes and the ticket costs 8.85€ each way, unless you have a Navigo or five-zone Paris Visite card. Once at the station, you can head directly into the forest or take Bus 1 in the direction of Les Lilas to the Château de Fontainebleau, which will take about 15 minutes. You can also walk the three kilometers into the town in under 40 minutes.
Fresh air fills your lungs on arriving in the classy town of Fontainebleau. It’s enveloped by the 280 sq km Forêt de Fontainebleau, which is as big a playground today as it was in the 16th century, with superb walking and rock-climbing opportunities. Situated 68km southeast of Paris, the town grew up around its magnificent château, one of the most beautifully decorated and furnished in France.
What is there to see?
The Château de Fontainebleau is, of course, at the top of most people’s list of things to see in this town 55 km southeast of Paris. Its 1,500 rooms, including Marie Antoinette’s Turkish boudoir and Napoleon III’s lavish theater, have been preserved or immaculately restored in recent years. Set within 130 acres of formal gardens and parkland, this UNESCO World Heritage Site lives up to and exceeds expectations. It is a monument depicting the whole of French culture in (relative) miniature. The palace and the town are surrounded by the Forêt de Fontainebleau. The 25,000 hectares of woodland contain 1,600 km of walking trails, great spots for bouldering, hiking and horse riding, and amazing biodiversity, including its own endemic tree species. If it’s your kind of thing, you can also visit the grave of Katherine Mansfield — the prominent modernist short story writer from New Zealand — in the local cemetery.

Le château royal de Fontainebleau est un château de styles principalement Renaissance et classique, jouxtant le centre-ville de Fontainebleau (Seine-et-Marne), à une soixantaine de kilomètres au sud-est de Paris, en France. Les premières traces d'un château à Fontainebleau remontent au XIIe siècle. Les derniers travaux furent effectués au XIXe siècle.
Haut lieu de l'histoire de France, le château de Fontainebleau a été l'une des demeures des souverains français depuis François Ier (qui en fit sa demeure favorite) jusqu'à Napoléon III. Plusieurs rois ont laissé leur empreinte dans la construction et l'histoire du château, qui est ainsi un témoin des différentes phases de l'Histoire de France depuis le Moyen Âge. Entouré d'un vaste parc et voisin de la forêt de Fontainebleau, le château se compose d'éléments de styles médiévaux, Renaissance, et classiques. Il témoigne de la rencontre entre l'art italien et la tradition française exprimée tant dans son architecture que dans ses décors intérieurs. Cette spécificité s'explique par la volonté de François Ier de créer à Fontainebleau une « nouvelle Rome » dans laquelle les artistes italiens viennent exprimer leur talent et influencer l'art français. C'est ainsi que naquit l'École de Fontainebleau, qui représenta la période la plus riche de l'art renaissant en France, et inspira la peinture française jusqu'au milieu du XVIIe siècle, voire au-delà. Napoléon Ier surnomma ainsi le château la « maison des siècles », évoquant par les souvenirs historiques dont les lieux sont le témoignage.
Le château fait l'objet d'un classement au titre des monuments historiques par la liste de 1862, classement complété par plusieurs arrêtés pris en 1913, 1930, 2008 et 2009. Par ailleurs, depuis 1981, le château fait partie avec son parc du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO. Riche d'un cadre architectural de premier ordre, le château de Fontainebleau possède également une des plus importantes collections de mobilier ancien de France, et conserve une exceptionnelle collection de peintures, de sculptures, et d'objets d'art, allant du VIe au XIXe siècle.

The magnificent Château de Fontainebleau, the residence of French Monarchs
The Château de Fontainebleau, listed as an Unesco Wold Heritage site since1981, has attracted many French kings since the 12th century due to its proximity to great hunting in the surrounding forest. François I converted the hunting lodge into the royal palace during the Renaissance. He employed the cream of the crop of Italy’s artists and craftsmen to decorate the interior, and lay out the gardens with lakes and canals. It is the only royal and imperial castle continually inhabited for seven centuries. Fontainebleau has witnessed some monumental historical events, such as the birth of Louis XIII in 1601 and Napoléon signing his deed of abdication there in 1814.
