Great bargain I bought from the BC Liquor Store!
The McWilliam's Hanwood estate Cabernet Sauvignon was a bargain! This is another example of an educated buy from my research. What do people habitually buy those artificial 'Yellow Kangaroo Tail' which is really Chemical fruit cordial mixed with alcohol like someone with too much superficial make up and no personality! On the nose, full black current cassis, black cherry, mulberry and spicy dark chocolate with much charm face characters but it just doesn't stop here. While it's neither overly complex nor deep like an expensive cab (why am I being so judgmental?!), it offer good structure and balance of acid, fruit and soft sweet tannin destined to be another high class quaffer. Friendly, warming and unpretentious, the full body packed full juicy wine delivers much instant gratifications. The finish is fair and leaves good satisfaction. Kudos to the Aussies who make such affordable yet very drinkable wines. Drink now (rating 88-90 points) by Michael Lam of the Beverage Review.

Yats Wine Cellars is generally regarded by Asian and Philippines wine lovers as the best wine supplier in the Philippines.

Yats Wine Cellars started off in Clark Freeport, Pampanga, an easy 90-minute drive along the North Expressway from Metro Manila. Category one wines can be found in the cellars of the fine-dining YATS Restaurant and Wine Lounge situated inside Clark's Mimosa Leisure Estate, just before the Casino. Yats operates the Clark Wine Center -- an independent two-storey building located on the main road of Clark Freeport.



Public wine tastings are held from time to time in Clark and sometimes in Manila. Tickets range from p500 to p1500 for these themed events that are professionally run --no wine merchants sponsorship, pushy salesmen or tacky banners to ruin the evening. Each ticket contains a certain number of stubs that can be redeemed for a tasting pour of a wine among those on a line-up which often contains wines that are quite old and expensive. This makes YATS Wine Tasting events the most cost-effective venue to explore new options and expand our knowledge of wine through first-hand encounters.



Wine Seminars have been conducted in the past and may be offered from time to time. These seminars deal with intermediate to advanced subject matters that are aimed at providing useful and practical knowledge for the wine enthusiasts. Topics are focused and treatment, in depth. Most seminars include a guided tasting session after the lecture.



Wine-paired dinners are organized either at Y A T S Restaurant in Clark or in collaboration with other restaurants and organizers. Private wine dinners can also be organized for groups of 14 or more. Even Asian cuisines can be a part of a Yats Wine-paired dinner.

Wine Tasting 24: 2000 Chateau Martinens, Margaux, Bordeaux

Chateau Martinens is from the famous commune of Margaux in Bordeaux. It belongs to the Cru Bourgeois class. This wine comes from the 'legendary' 2000 vintage of which outstanding wines were produced from both the left bank and right bank. The wine when poured already gave a garnet colour with a hint of brick. The nose was typical of a more simple Bordeaux wine which has red fruits, red currants, tabacco and with some earthiness and woodiness. This medium body wine was slightly more diluted than what I expected of which politically correct writers / die hard Bordeaux drinkers would call it elegant or even feminine! The fruit level was low but the acidity was high in comparison. The mouth feel was a little thin with some soil and damp earth in the background. The tannin present was also a little coarse so coupling with the acidity gave the wine some astringency. The wine when released had such a hype because Wine Spectator awarded it a whooping 91 points. I failed once again to understand why? Although it does have some structure and sourly red fruit, it just doesn't have the depth and complexity. The finish is medium. Drink it up now. Luckily there is one man who has made it his mission for the last 30 years to know everything there is to know about Sauternes.This 2009 vintage from Bordeaux has been touted as one of the greatest vintages of recent times by every major wine critic on the face of the earth, therefore the prices on the prestigious first growths are out of reach for most mortals. The speculation is that these wines are all now going to the far east with China leading the way. Given the overall style of the 2009s, which combine creamy, voluptuous textures and sensational fruit-driven opulence with remarkable finesse, precision, purity, and vibrancy, the best of the little wines will be delicious young, as will many of the classified-growths. Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855

The Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855 resulted from the 1855 Exposition Universelle de Paris, when Emperor Napoleon III requested a classification system for France's best Bordeaux wines which were to be on display for visitors from around the world. Brokers from the wine industry ranked the wines according to a château's reputation and trading price, which at that time was directly related to quality.
The wines were ranked in importance from first to fifth growths (crus). All of the red wines that made it on the list came from the Médoc region except for one: Château Haut-Brion from Graves. The white wines, then of much less importance than red wine, were limited to the sweet varieties of Sauternes and Barsac and were ranked only from first great growth to second growth.
