His ancestors were influential in the Ardennes, Eifel and Luxembourg regions for hundreds of years.
His wife, Margarete of Courtenay, was of the French Royal Family, daughter of the Latin Emperor of Constantinople, sister-in-law to the King of Hungary and cousin to King Philip-Augustus. Margarete's ancestors, included the Crusaders from the Houses of Flanders and Hainault, Henry's and Margarete's son, Frederic had served in the Fifth Crusade. In 1417, the dominion passed by inheritance to the House of Nassau, which, in 1530 collected the principality of Orange as well. From then on, the castle was no longer the official residence of the counts. People can still see the rich architecture the House of Nassau inherited, as no further modifications were made.
The main construction parts of the castle which are preserved today, in particular the chapel and the small and large palaces, originate from the end of the 12th and the first half of the 13th century. The 'Quartier de Juliers' on the western side of the large palace (no longer existing today), originates from the beginning of the 14th century. The House of Nassau was only constructed at the beginning of the 17th century.
In 1820, under the reign of King William I of Holland, the castle was sold piece by piece, and as a result, it fell into a state of ruin. It was a pile of rubble until the family of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg transferred it to State ownership in 1977. Since restored to its former glory, the castle now ranks as a monument of not only regional, but European importance.

Vianden Luxemburg
Geschiedenis
. History already in Roman times was Vianden a castellum. It was later the seat of the counts of Vianden, Vianden who once trod in the castle high above the town. Vianden got town rights in the 11th century on the model of Trier. In 1417 came the County of Vianden by inheritance in the hands of Engelbrecht I of Nassau, count of Vianden. This title went in about 1890 on the Walramse line of the House of Nassau. The head of the House of Orange-Nassau (the King of the Netherlands) still performs the noble title count/Countess of Vianden. In 1815 came a large part of the County of Vianden in Prussia. The remaining part was divided into a number of cantons. That is the reason why the Canton Vianden Luxembourg is the smallest Canton of nowadays. Points of interest an important point of interest of Vianden is the castle of Vianden. The castle ruin is restored and is on display. Highlights of architecture are hetTrinitariërsklooster and the associated monastic Church from the middle of the 11th century. It has now been almost completely restored and also within this castle almost completely furnished. A survival park is opened in 2006. At Vianden is an important hydroelectric power plant. Sketch by Victor Hugo of the House where now his museum is the French poet and writer Victor Hugo came into his life four times in Vianden. He was friends with the Mayor. On 30 may 1871 he took as a refugee with his family for several months moved into hotel Koch. Across the street from this he moved into a hotel room where he wrote a few hours every morning for three months. In this House was in 1935 the Victor Hugo museum. It is known for its impressive castle and beautiful location in the Our valley.
