Manimahesh Lake (also known as Dal Lake, Manimahesh), situated in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas, is a high altitude lake (el. 4080 m.). The name Manimahesh signifies a jewel (Mani) on Lord Shiva's (Mahesh'es) crown. Local people call Manimahesh Kailash peak that stands high close to the lake is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva (Hindu deity). This place is believed to be second to the Lake Manasarovar in its religious significance is that the moon-rays reflected from the jewel can be seen from Manimahesh Lake on clear full-moon nights (which is a rare occasion). It is more likely to be the light reflected from the glacier that adorns the peak, like a serpent on Shiva's neck.
The Manimahesh Kailash Peak, also known as Chamba Kailash, which stands towering high over the Manimahesh Lake, is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, the (Hindu deity). It is located in the Bharmour subdivision of the Chamba district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The peak is 26 kilometres (16 mi) from Bharmour in the Budhil valley. It is one of the major pilgrimage sites in Himachal Pradesh. The Manimahesh Lake is at the base of the Kailash peak at 5,653 metres (18,547 ft) and both are held in deep veneration by people of Himachal Pradesh, particularly the Gaddi tribes of the region, as the abode of Lord Shiva. In the month of Bhadon, on the eighth day of the new moon period a fair is held in the precincts of the lake that attracts thousands of pilgrims.
Chaurasi Temple is located in the center of Bharmour town and it holds immense religious importance because of temples built around 1400 years ago. Life of people in Bharmour centers around the temple complex-Chaurasi, named so because of 84 shrines built in the periphery of Chaurasi Temple. Chaurasi is Hindi word for number eighty four. The beautiful Shikhara style temple of Manimahesh occupies the center of the complex. Chaurasi Temple Complex was built approximately in 7th century, although repairs of many temples have been carried out in later period. There are 84 big and small temples in Chaurasi temple complex.
Chaurasi is a spacious level ground in center of Bharmour where the galaxy of temples mostly in the form of Shivlingas exists. The Chaurasi Temple Complex offers a delightful, clean and a scenic view. Another temple built in the same style is that of Lord Vishnu cast in his Narsimha avatar.
Etymology of 'Manimahesh' signifies a jewel (Mani) on Lord Shiva's (Mahesh's) crown. According to a local legend, the moon-rays reflected from the jewel can be seen from Manimahesh Lake on clear full moon night (which is a rare occasion). However, it has been inferred that such a phenomenon could be the result of reflection of light from the glacier that embellishes the peak in the form of a serpent around Shiva's neck.
A rare event of the first sun’s rays falling on the Mani Mahesh peak is seen in reflection in the lake like saffron tilak. This display in the lake has enhanced the legendary belief of the Gaddis on the sanctity of Manimahesh Lake at the base of the Mount Kailash, which they visit on an annual pilgrimage. This event has also contributed to the practice of taking bath in the lake on Janmashtami day or Radhashtami day, fifteen days after the birth of Lord Krishna.
According to legend, Lord Shiva performed penance for several hundred years here. The water cascades sprang out from his matted hair and took the form of the lake. The lake as formed appears like a saucer. It has two distinct parts. The larger part has icy cold water, called the 'Shiv Karotri' (the bathing place of Lord Shiva). The smaller part of the lake, which is hidden by the bushes, has lukewarm water and is called 'Gauri Kund', the bathing place of Parvati, Shiva's consort. Thus, men and women bathe in different parts of the lake. According to rites, the dip (called locally as naun) in the lake is taken four times, if permitted or otherwise only once.
In the periphery of the lake, now there is a marble image of Lord Shiva, which is worshipped by pilgrims. The image is called the Chaumukha. The lake and its surroundings present an impressive view. The still, clear and unpolluted waters of the lake reflect the snow-capped peaks that overlook the valley. There is also a small temple in the shikhara style on the periphery of the lake. A brass image of Lakshmi Devi known as Mahishasuramardini is deified in the temple.

Chaurasi Temple Complex: God Shiva the supreme power of this universe resides here and is known as HARI-HAR Mahadev and MANI MAHESH Mahadev from the times immemorial. Chaurasi Temple Complex is located in the center of Bharmour town and it holds immense religious importance. Temples were built by the King of Bharmour, Raja Meru Varman, in 7th century in most beautiful shikhara and nagara styles. Meru, the father of the first recorded prince Jaistambh in the Chamba Vanshavali was the first to settle Bharmour. Formally known as Brahmpura, was the ancient capital of Chamba District, Himachal Pradesh, India. The name Brahmpur is derived from Brahmani(Bharmani mata) the presiding deity of the area. Situated at an altitude of 7000 feet in the Budhil valley. About Bharmour, the indologist Herman Goetz observes: The wide Budhal valley in which Brahmour is situated resembles most beautiful part of Switzerland. Its people, the gaddi shepherds and cowherds, their wooden house with balconies like Swiss chalets, their milk production complimented by some poor millet fields, vegetables gardens and land. But amidst this Swiss scenery there stands Hindu temples erected in the 7th-8th centuries(Goetz,1955,p.4). Life of people in Bharmour centers around the temple complex- Chourasi, named so because of 84 shrines built in the periphery of Chaurasi Temple. Chaurasi is Hindi word for number eighty four, also there are believed 84 lacs Yonis (चौरासी लाख योनी). The genealogy of the Rajas of Chamba refers to the historical event of arrival of 84 Siddha-Yogis during
the reign of Raja Sahil Varman(first half of the 10th century AD). Pleased with the hospitality and piety of the King, they gave him the boon that he would be blessed with ten sons. The King requested them to stay there until the fulfillment of the boon. Being 84 in number, the place inhabited by them came to be known as Chaurasi. The present structure of these shrines was built by Raja Umed Singh (1748-1764 AD) The place is also known as Siddha-Pitha. The beautiful shikhara style temple of Mani Mahesh occupies the center of the complex. The main temples in the complex are: Lakshana Devi Temple (Lakhna Devi/Bhadrakali): The temple of Lakshana Devi is the oldest temple at Chaurasi Temple Bharmour. It retains many of the old architectural features of wooden temples and has richly carved entrance. It is said to be constructed by Raja Maru Varman (680 AD). Durga is represented here in her aspect of four armed Mahishasuramardini, the slayer of the demon Mahishasura.
Manimahesh (Shiva) Temple: Manimahesh temple which stands in the centre of Chaurasi temple, is main temple, enshrining a huge Shiva linga. This monumental temple with a high beehive shikhara bearing no sculptures on the outer surface is of middle Pratihara type. The repairs of the temples were carried under Raja Udai Singh (1690-1720 AD). Surya Linga: The Surya Linga (Suryavanshi Linga), which stands in a modern shed is the family deity of the Suryavansi Rajas of Chamba. Tradition affirms the Surya Linga was installed by Raja Maru, who belonged to the ruling ikshvaku family of Ayodhya, as a symbol of founding of the Kingdom of Suryavansi under the Lordship of Shiva
