Chauvin Sculpture Garden | AMAZING Roadside Attraction in Louisiana
In Chauvin Louisiana is an incredible roadside attraction called the Chauvin Sculpture Garden. Artist and recluse Kenny Hill created over 100 beautiful concrete sculptures right on the bayou then he mysteriously walked away from everything and disappeared. What he left behind is an impressive sight to see.

“Expression of Faith and Fear: The Chauvin Sculpture Garden by Kenny Hill” by Deborah Cibelli
From 1988 until he abandoned the site in 2000 at the age of 52, Kenneth Hill created approximately one hundred cement statues of angels and other figures on nine round platforms that he placed around a meandering pathway through the garden in Chauvin, Louisiana, 60 miles south southwest of New Orleans. Hill filled his garden with numerous self-portraits, angelic figures and other imagery that suggested the garden was autobiographical and that he had a psychological investment in the religious imagery. The community, including neighbors and persons affiliated with Nicholls State University, the institution charged with preserving the site, have responded to the power of the artist’s vision, making the site an important resource for community events such as the “Blessing of the Fleet” an annual parade of boats held annually at the garden bordering the Bayou Petit Caillou. This presentation will discuss the preservation of the site, it will examine the religious symbolism as an expression of faith and fear, and it will discuss the significance of the site as a ritual space for the community.

Vanishing Points™ is a web app that enables community members in South Louisiana to identify points of cultural significance that are threatened due to land subsidence, sea level rise and coastal erosion. In efforts to document their threatened culture, community members log memories, interviews and photos of places that have defined their community for generations, but are now disappearing.

Established in 1967, named the Museum of Biblical Art in 1999, the MBA, is an art museum in Dallas, Texas that is unlike any museum in the world. It has a simple mission: To display art with a Biblical theme. Nothing of its size exists in the United States, making it a treasure trove for art enthusiasts. Diverse types of art are exhibited including bronze sculpture installations, drawings, fine prints, and oil paintings. Specialized galleries have been created for Biblical Archaeology, Jewish Art, Religious Architecture, Israeli Art, African American Art and Hispanic Art.
The Museum is a cultural crossroads, utilizing art for tolerance and understanding reflected in the various archaeological exhibits and decorative art from Israel and the Holy Land. The MBA's vision encompasses the classical arts with a call to beauty which emphasizes the Biblical figurative art illustrating the narratives of the Bible and a call to the study of classical Greco-Roman art, archaeology and architecture.

Art of Kenny Hill
Little is known about artist Kenny Hill, a bricklayer by trade, who was born around 1950. In 1988, he settled on some property on the bayou in Chauvin (pronounced show-van), Louisiana. Over time, Hill built a small rustic home that demonstrated an interesting use of space and attention to detail. In 1990 he began transforming his lush bayou environment into a fantastic chronicle of the world as seen through his eyes.

Kohler Foundation, the Journey to Preserve Vernacular Art by Terri Yoho
Kohler Foundation is known nationally for their preservation of art and art environments, including seven environments in Wisconsin, plus the Kenny Hill Sculpture Garden in Chauvin, LA; the monumental S.P. Dinsmoor’s Garden of Eden in Lucas, KS; Hartman Rock Garden in Springfield, OH; and most recently, and still in process, ST. EOM’s Pasaquan in Buena Vista, GA and the Bernard Langlais Estate in Cushing, Maine. The preference is to preserve these fragile vernacular art forms in situ, but when this is not possible, art has been removed and placed in museums, libraries, colleges, universities, and other non-profit institutions for its long term care and preservation.
Executive Director of Kohler Foundation, Terri Yoho, will present a brief history of Kohler Foundation’s work, beginning in the 1970s with the preservation of Fred Smith’s Wisconsin Concrete Park in Price County, Wisconsin. The first question is can it be saved and should it be saved in situ? Over the years, a model has been developed for approaching preservation of art environments and collections of work by self-taught artists. While the model for preservation is relatively consistent, the challenges presented by these environments are ever changing and varied. Beyond financial and esthetic considerations, the foundation must deal with unusual and sometimes hazardous materials, ethical issues, municipal zoning, safety concerns, political considerations, programming needs, and more. Just as each site is unique, the receiving stewards each have specific needs, skills, and resources that must be considered.
In every case, the success of these sites hinges on collaboration. Without it, preservation of the site is not possible Discussion will also focus on past collaborations and how they contribute to the ongoing viability and vitaslity of each site and how the preserved sites come alive through programming and community involvement.
Presenter: Terri Yoho, Executive Director, Kohler Foundation, Inc.
