Seh Tek Tong Cheah Kongsi or Cheah Kongsi is the oldest Cheah clan association in Malaysia and was established in 1810. It is located in the core zone of GeorgeTown, UNESCO World Heritage Site, Penang. This clan ancestral temple features a classic hokkien architecture with the surprising additions of British lion heads on the fascade of the temple. The temple was completed in the year 1873.
Formerly it was known as Cheah Kay Hock Haw Kong Kongsi and was registered and known as Seh Tek Tong Cheah Kongsi w.e.f. 1st April 2011.
It has a membership of 600 members who have their ancestral origin specifically from Cheok T’ng Village, Sam Tor District, Hai Teng County, Cheang Chew Prefecture, Fujian Province, China. The first person to have the Cheah Surname was SIN PEK and the 36th generation descendent was XIE AUN (320-385A.D.) who was also known as GUANG HUI SHENG WANG. The Kongsi worship deities Hock Haw Kong as the patron saint. The Cheah clan’s surname emblem is Bao Shu (or Precious Tree in Chinese).
In the past the Kongsi had many prominent trustees like Cheah Chow Phan, Cheah Choo Ewe.JP, Cheah Tek Soon, Cheah Tek Thye, Cheah Cheang Lim.JP, Cheah Phee Cheok and Senator Dato’ Dr. Cheah Toon Lok.
Under the leadership of the current chairman Cheah Swee Huat, DJN,PKT., the Cheah Kongsi has undergone significant transformations and became a heritage icon after a major restoration of the clan house which was completed in 2015.The Youth and Women Sections were formed and the Rules were amended to give incentives to members who excels in sports and university aids to members female off springs. The Cheah Kongsi also plays a important role by organizing intangible cultural heritage like holding the annual Chinese New Year Gathering, Dumpling Festival, Mooncake Festival and Walkathon for the members and their families.

Seh Tek Tong Cheah Kongsi is one of the chinese kongsi(association) building/temple. It have beautiful building design similar in 1900 housing design. it also have beautiful chinese traditional room decoration Art. Really amazing to see this. The art are really nice... will go there again.

The Cheah Kongsi (clan house) located on Armenia Street, although not as popular as Khoo Kongsi, is well worth a visit while in Penang. Over one million Malaysian Ringgit have been spent on restorations. Admission is free.

Exploring Penang (Georgetown): Things To Do in One Day
After our trip to Langkawi, we headed to Georgetown, in Penang, Malaysia. One day we walked around and did all these things in a single day. More coming on:
Penang, Malaysia is an island just off the coast of the West Coast of Malaysia. It’s one of the most famous areas of Malaysia, especially known for its rich and diverse culture and for its food - many people come to Penang just to eat - as did I. Ying and I arrived to Penang from Langkawi, and we stayed in Penang for about a week, doing some work, and eating out way through the city. One day though, we decided to put on our shoes and go to visit as many of the attractions in the center of the city as we could. So this travel videos is an overview of the top things to do in Georgetown, Penang, but also a travel guide as well. Hope you enjoy to!
To begin the day, I started off with a Penang tourist map and located all the places we wanted to go. Since we were staying close to the Georgetown World Heritage Inc., that’s where we first decided to stop. It’s more of an information center, so after just a few minutes we continued on our way to the Chew Jetty, one of the couple of Chinese docks where homes are built over the water. On the way though, we walked through Lebuh Armenian (one of the most famous streets in Penang), past George Town street art, and also briefly stopped at Cheah Kongsi. The Chew Jetty was a nice place to walk around for a few minutes, there wasn’t a lot to do there, but mostly some small souvenir shops and some nice places to take photos.
We continued walking and passed the Queen Victory Lighthouse and then we continued on to Fort Cornwallis, a British built fort, and the only fort in Malaysia - though as they said it wasn’t ever used for battle. I was a little disappointed visiting Fort Cornwallis in Penang because we paid a pretty big entrance fee, but there really wasn’t anything to see inside - I could have seen it all from the outside. Anyway, we continued on walking around Penang, and then circled back past a cathedral. By this time we were getting quite hungry, so we headed into Little India, and then continued to a famous restaurant called Kapitan for tandoori chicken. I didn’t know they were really famous for their rice biryani, but I got a couple pieces of tandoori chicken and naan, it they were both incredible.
In the afternoon, we first stopped at the Goddess of Mercy Temple in Penang, and walked around for a few minutes, and then continued on to Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, one of Penang’s main attractions and a place I was really looking forward to visiting. Mr. Cheong, an insanely wealthy Chinese business man built the Blue Mansion and it has now been restored and it’s actually open as a hotel, but they also give a couple of guided tours each day. The tour took 45 minutes, and it was beautiful to see. The only thing I wish is that we could have seen a little more of the Blue Mansion, because unfortunately we didn’t get to see much, but mostly listened to the history of the mansion - still it was worth seeing in Penang.
To finish of one day of things to do in Penang, Georgetown, we visited the Kapitan Keling Mosque, and then lastly we went to Khoo Kongsi. For dinner to end this day in Penang, we went to a restaurant to eat dim sum, and a few other Chinese dishes as well.

Reviving the Cheah Kongsi Building
A documentary about the restoration work of Seh Tek Tong Cheah Kongsi in George Town, Penang. Features interviews with Peter Cheah, Chairman of Cheah Kongsi and Mei Chee Seong of ALM Architects. The restoration of the two-century-old temple represents a milestone achievement in reviving a living religious heritage site using a combination of indigenous knowledge of Chinese and Malay vernacular building techniques. The 18-month project with the help of craftsman from the Fujian province use traditional carpentry and masonry building techniques, “cut-and-paste” (jian nien), and materials to preserve the dilapidated elements. Detailed archival research and careful design was done between the architects, conservators, Chinese craftsman and Kongsi stakeholders to reverse inappropriate previous interventions in the roof and duogong paint making Cheah Kongsi a notable heritage landmark in George Town, Penang.

Khoo Kongsi is one of Georgetown’s most interesting attractions. Built some 650 years ago, it is part of the goh tai seh (five big clans) that formed the backbone of the Hokkien community in olden-days Penang. One of Penang’s most lavishly decorated kongsis, it is located on Jalan Acheh, off Lebuh Pitt.

Khoo Kongsi is a large Chinese clanhouse in Penang Malaysia. The entrance may not look interesting, but walk further inside to see one of the grandest clan temple in the country. Due to its location in the UNESCO World Heritage area of George Town, it is a popular attraction for tourists.

The Khoo Kongsi is a large Chinese clanhouse with elaborate and highly ornamented architecture, a mark of the dominant presence of the Chinese in Penang, Malaysia. The famous Khoo Kongsi is the grandest clan temple in the country. It is also one of the city's major historic attractions. The clan temple has retained its authentic historic setting, which includes an association building, a traditional theatre and the late 19th century rowhouses for clan members, all clustered around a granite-paved square. It is located in Cannon Square in the heart of the oldest part of the city of George Town, in the midst of narrow, winding lanes and quaint-looking pre-War houses exuding a palpable old world charm.
